skybus from city costs more than this… +1 for me

  • +4

I'll book a couple return trips. Cheaper than a taxi around the corner.

    • -6

Not really. The deal is only one way.

      • +26

        And a taxi ride isn't?

        • -5

A couple of return trips won't be cheaper than a taxi round the corner as only half the trip is cheap… the return halves push the price up past a short taxi ride!

        • +2

I spent some time in the ER recently, and was discharged at midnight one night. Called for a Taxi, and it was $23 for a 10 minute trip.

That short taxi ride is more expensive than going to Sydney in this case.

        • Er, he said a couple of return trips. A return trip is 9.90 + $20 or so. $29.90 x 3 is more than $23.

        • -2

That's assuming he makes it with tiger.
Taxi is probably more reliable in my actual experience.
Cheaper too as you won't run the very real risk of having to a ticket with another airline at short notice just so you don't get there 3 days late. Again, only based on my actual experience.

        • Going to SYD is always better than going to ER…and cheaper too!

      • On Tiger's website it says "Melbourne <-> Sydney for under $10!" that to me means the deal is for both directions. Why do you say it is for one way only?

        • It doesn't say "return" (amongst other things.)

        • What's unclear about

          Melbourne <-> Sydney?

These days a "return" is simply two singles. There is no discount for booking a "return".

  • Can someone be kind enough to explain how this works?

    1) Does this include carry on?
    2) How much is it to return?
    3) Is Tiger really that bad?

    • 1) Yes (carry on is ALWAYS included!)
      2) Sounds like deal is one-way only so return looks likely to be $29 or $39 for those months in 2013
      3) No

      • -6

        3) Yes.

        • this is surely better than country link that charge me much more than this

      • +1

        2) Both ways, from their front page and trying out some dates.

    • 1) Yes
      2) Deal is one-way
      3) From the 3 times I've flow with them.. yes, very bad. Never ever again!

      • 2) It is both ways, just try it yourself. I mean really, try it yourself. I put in 23 and 24 July 2013 and it was $9.95 each way.

  • Is that Jetstar a 24/7 number to call up and get them to price match? Would much rather fly with them.

    • +6

haha, 4/6 of my Jetstar flights this year were delayed by 2 hours or more and 1 got cancelled…, never again !!!, probably Virgin is a better bet, but I'd give Tiger my sale this time, aggressive pricing is the only reason air travel has become cheap, if we don't back such firms who initiate this, they'll eventually die and the inevitable price rise with takeoff !

      • That's bad >_< I've never had a delay with Jetstar. would prefer to fly Virgin as well, have never flown Tiger but from all the bad things I've heard, I said I'd never give them my business.. Might be breaking that word with this bargain though.

        • I haven't had a serious delay with Jetstar or Virgin but they annoyed me by changing the flight time, once earlier this year and again for next year. In the first case they made it earlier which made a connection impossible so I had to opt for an hours later flight, losing touring time at the destination. The second case was not so bad, only pushed forward 1/2 hour.

  • +22

Isn't the world going to end before those travel dates come around???

    • +28

I guess you would have nothing to lose then.. Since your savings would be worth nothing if the world ends? :)

      • +10

        Well played

      • +8

"Your savings"… in the context of a $9.95 flight. This is why I love OzBargain.

        • +1

That's what we call a rich ozbargainer. Most of us probably wouldn't even have that. 'savings' in OB terms is usually how many SSD drives you have and an assortment of other assets. Maybe even some shares from the free brokerage deals.

        • +1

Ozbargainers have plenty of savings. Sometimes several times a week.

    • im going to make a packet on sportsbet when the worlds ends http://goo.gl/ui4PJ . Get on the hot tip

  • -4

I think they only use one pilot to save money.

    • +7

When he has a cold, Tiger Airlines has "unexpected delays"

      • No, I mean they use one pilot per plane (rather than a pilot & co-pilot). ;) 50% reduction in costs right there.

        • Well if it's a 50% reduction I guess that is there only expense. OMG, I want to buy tiger out since their planes don't need fuel and other staff to service the planes. O_o

        • +8

They also use the Woolworths 4c/L discount and ING paywave.

    • +4

Im pretty sure the pilots would only cost $100-$200max per flight… double that isnt really going to break an airlines bank. Id say they cut costs in other ways (like checking Ozbargain for all their onboard supplies etc)

  • SYD-Mackay is $9.95 on Monday for travel 17 December and 25 December 2012.

Really? Must be all gone because the cheapest I see is $49.95 in each direction around those dates.

    • Same here but I looked at syd to melb route. Is there something I'm missing here to not get the price? Maybe the prices appear once Sunday comes?

    • +2

read the op post above when the sale start

      • There's plenty around tuesday and wednesday.

  • Normally it takes a couple years before a startup budget airline becomes reliable enough.

Please tell me there are Tiger flights that have no hiccups by now!?

Am dreading my first tiger flight coming up in Feb (Sydney - gold coast return)

    • +6

Don't worry, man. Just make sure your life insurance policy is in order.

      • +1

        Zing! its gold

    • +2

My wife and I flew from Sydney to Gold Coast today and would fly with Tiger again. Just make sure to give yourself plenty of time to check in as they are understaffed. If you go to check in within 45 mins of departure, they can refuse you.

  • -4

Dont think Jetsar Price Match will work, as Jetstar Melbourne flights to Sydney originate out of Avalon, whereas Tiger is out of Tullamarine. Worth trying but could be a dissapointment. By that time all the Tiger fares will be sold out.

    • +3

jetstar also fly from tullamarine, i just flown with them last month

    • +9

Will Officeworks price match then do you reckon?

    • -1

Don't quote me on the time frame, but a price match on this deal with Jetstar is not possible as you are required to book one or two weeks ahead.

      • Yes it is, I just used price beat for July next year :D

  • I assume this doesn't start from midnight on Sunday :(

  • -4

A check of the Jetsar web site does not offer Sydney as a destination from Melboune (Tullamarine). It does if you specify Melbourne (ALL) but then shows on the graph, as Avalon. I am hoping I am wrong, not having flown out of Melbourne (tullamarine) to Sydney with Jetsar.

    • +1

I have flown from Melbourne ( tullamarine) to Sydney on jetstar before , not too sure why it is showing you that

  • -1

My error, went to the next step and realised that my comments were indeed incorrect - please remove

  • hi op, what is your source for this promotion? stripes promotion or email?

  • Yeah. Hasn't started yet. And I was all pumped for drunkenly buying plane flights I had no intention of using :( (or had the plan to surprise myself by sobering up and finding I got myself a good ozbargainised piece of super cheap awesomeness while under the influence).

  • The website only has $49.95 special for Sunday
    ??

  • But the plane smell like poo poo.

  • SYD - MEL also available during the mentioned travel dates for $9.95 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays

  • +3

Wow, 1 night in Melbourne (depart Tuesday, return flight on Wednesday) for $19.90
Plus it's not some random 5am or 9pm flight!

No need to book accommodation - staying up all night (crown casino etc)

    WHAT A BARGAIN! So KEEN!
    Thanks OP!

    • yeah, thats the best accom option, i have done it many a time. the skybus runs 24/7 so you can arrive circa 6am and get a prime snoozing position at your departure gate.

    • +1

With such price, you can go back to your home in Sydney and go to Melbourne again next day.

  • +1

The very last point on Jetstar's price match site:

This promotion is valid for flight bookings made up to and including 30 June 2013.

    :(

$15 booking fee from tiger, but $34.90 SYD-MEL return is still a great deal.

    • Did you miss the ME Bank Mastercard debit deal?

      www.ozbargain.com.au/node/81565

At first I only ordered the card for the free $50, but then I kept it when I realised I could save $15 on Tiger flights.

There are no monthly fees and just like the amazing Citibank debit card you can make free withdrawals at Westpac ATMs.

    • +2

Well, I just rang and used price beat and they had absolutely no problems giving it to me!

      • Wow, you're right. Booked another trip for the week after, figured why not considering it's just $17.91 return (!) and I'm on uni break then as well.

  • Did anyone try ringing Jetstart to beat the price?

    • Yep. It worked brilliantly.

      • Thank you. I booked same day return trip from Sydney to Melbourne by jetstar.

  • SYD-Mackay is $9.95 on Monday for travel 17 December and 25 December 2012.

Anybody found this? Is there a trick to get it to appear? Though $49.95 is a good price for that distance.

    • +1

      SYD-Mackay is $9.95 … ON MONDAY :)

      • Yes, I have tried 17th and 24th and it's still $49.95. Did you actually try it?

I wonder where the OP got this info. It's not mentioned anywhere and certainly not in the bargains summary.

But I've lost interest since looking at the Mackay Wiki page. There is one NP within driving distance and the Whitsundays, but not much to do in the town itself.

Edit: Ah, I see maybe the OP means the sale opens tomorrow, Monday. An unfortunate phrasing since 17th and 24th happen to be Monday also.

        • its called inside info folks. Might want to check Tiger's website next Friday for cheap Feb/March travel.

        • Looking forward to that. Hope the cheap destinations are more interesting. Nothing wrong with Melbourne, just that I'm already headed there in Feb.

  • +2

This is seriously the best deal I have seen on OzBargain. My wife and I along with my kids have been wanting to go to Sydney for a while. I have an Australian Debit Mastercard which meant no Booking Fee. All up return it cost me $99 for a family of 5!

The bus that goes past my house drops me off right next to Tiger airlines and I only pay Zone 2 prices, so this is seriously a cheap trip for us.

The flight times is awesome too! No 5:30 AM trips. Mel-Syd is 11 AM, and return is 7:45 which isn't too bad. Now if anyone knows some cheap decent accomidation and car hire, this might be a cool trip after all. We booked in Sep 2013 which is perfect up in Sydney.

    • +4

Sounds great, until you get to Sydney. Train Airport to City $61.70 for 2 Adults & 3 Children.

And that is only ONE way.

      • +2

Take a taxi for a family, or if you're really cheap, go for a short stroll and catch a local Sydney Buses service.

      • +4

way to kill the buzz mate

        • +11

:) I think Sydney's antedated and illogical transport system kills the buzz for everyone.

Does it take 3 buses and 1 train to reach your destination? Not only will you suffer a longer trip with a lot of changes but you'll also need to pay for 4 separate trips. And of course the MyMulti Day Pass is there for $21, unlimited travel as far as you want - but why not sell a "MyMulti 1" day pass for less when that's all I'll need (especially when I can get a WEEKLY ticket for $43). Or just an unlimited ticket for buses, like in London (or give us any other logical public transport incentive seen almost EVERYWHERE else).

Did you book a full-price return ticket from Central to Parramatta to save time later on for yourself and others? Bad move. Now you wish to return to Bondi Junction but you have the wrong station listed on your destination. B..but it's the same price anyway, $4.80 mister? Too bad, you need to fork out another $3.40 (that's right, almost the same price as the original!). In fact, anytime you wish to extend your trip by 1 stop we'll charge you the full-fare as well, to teach you a lesson for not planning your whole life in advance.

Do you work 3 days a week to make ends meet? Sucks to be you. Your bill comes to $42, so logically you wouldn't spend $43 on a weekly ticket. But unfortunately your girlfriend decides to go to Manly on Sunday - $14 return. $1 didn't look so bad now, did it.

Planning to ride your bike to and from the train stations during peak hour. You'll still inconvenience everyone either way with our lack of a bike carriage but we'll charge you a child fare on top to teach you a lesson trying to save money on buses.

I could go on and on about travel tens and "sections" but I think that's enough venting for one morning.

        • +1

But if you travel on Sunday a family with children under 16 can use the whole network of trains, buses and ferries for $2.50 each using a Funday Sunday ticket. Logical not.

        • But you'd still be up for normal weekday transport on the other leg, unless staying 7 days or multiples of. Anyway the lack of a combined ticket is one of the most antiquated things about the Sydney network. Maybe the Opal card might work.

Edit: Plus, the Mel <-> Syd fares are only for Tue and Wed.

      • For cheap way out of the airport for a group, take the taxi to Mascot station (~5 mins) for $12. Then train to Central for $3.40 each.

  • just booked $39.80 return Mel-Syd. sweeeet

  • It works for return flights ..I booked return flights for $19.90 + $15.00 Booking fee.

  • +4

A 28 Degree Mastercard also works as a "Debit Mastercard" on the website. No idea why.

    • That's useful to know! Wish I knew that when I booked a few months ago.

    • I used my 28 degrees mastercard to pay for some Tiger flights back in August and they definitely charged the ridiculous $7.50 per sector per person fees ($60 for 4 return flights).

I'd love to be proven wrong, but I doubt Tiger has changed their policies in the last few months.

      • very interesting. Because I have never been charged to this day. Very odd.

  • If the travel dates were extended another 2 weeks it would've been perfect for me

  • +1

    wow, cheaper than myki travel!

    • Probably less painful to use too :(

  • Hey Skystar, you seem to know so I'll ask some questions to satisfy my curiosity. Are these sales desperation tactics? I mean they are committing to losing better paying bookings on these flights so are they not sure they'll be in business? Or do they know from history that they'll never fill mid-week flights so might as well get some publicity? Or maybe they know that they won't sell these out since not everybody can commit to a date 6 months or more ahead?

  • I just got flights for $35.84 return - used the Jetstar price beat :D Only going overnight but it should still be fun!

  • Taking the Skybus from the airport to the city one way costs almost as much as the SYD-MEL return flight! Think I'll catch the 901 bus to Broadmeadows station and train it to the city instead, being the ozbargainer that I am :)

  • +1

    It's a "12 days of Christmas" promotion: http://www.tigerairways.com/au/en/12_days_of_christmas.php

  • Just booked 5 tickets return. Costed me $89.55. No booking surcharge. Awesome deal! Wouldn't worry even we can't make it. :)

    Thanks OP!

  • A day of shopping and dinner and overnight with Sydney friends! Thanks!!

  • I booked a group of 11 through jetstar using this deal. On the phone I didn't even need to mention Tiger — guessing they'd already had a few calls getting the price beat.

    Thanks for posting!

  • Damn I just missed out! I will wait for tomorrows deals

  • I just booked a return trip for myself $35 :) and am in the process of contacting everyone I know try and find a travel buddy. I am flying out Monday 17/12 and returning Thursday 20/12 planning to do a Whitsunday sailing trip :) if the dates suit and you want a travel buddy let me know!

  • Thank you OzBargain! I just picked up 3 x return flights to Sydney - Mackay for $59.70!
