Can you buy apple giftcards from officeworks with these :)

    • +1

Asking all the right questions 😁

    • bump

    • Should be able to

    • Not quite sure if the point 2 from Partner Gift Cards says, however I've pretty sure they have a notice to say that cannot purchase a gift card using another gift card as a payment method.

    • +5

If it works, it would be a miracle.

      • Officeworks updated their website in December 2022 to highlight their gift card policy. In short, it says you cannot use any "gift card" to purchase a gift card (and Officeworks uses a very broad definition of "gift card" that covers Ultimate gift cards).

      • Officeworks started putting up signs in front of their in-store checkouts around the same time to tell customers they cannot use gift cards to purchase gift cards.

      • Officeworks started rolling out an update to their in-store checkouts in June 2023 to automatically block anyone from using an Ultimate gift card to purchase any gift cards. Attempting to do this on a patched checkout will see an Invalid Product Mix error message pop up on the EFTPOS terminal, plus the staff member will see a message on their screen saying that you cannot use a gift card type payment method. I have tried this a few times since June 2023 using different mobile wallets and different types of Ultimate gift cards and attempting to purchase different gift cards, but I have run into the blocks.

      • Officeworks has probably blocked people from using Ultimate gift cards to pay for gift cards sold on their online. Two people reported during the 15% off Ultimate eGift Card deal about a year ago it did not work. Also this person.

      • I have no idea whether Officeworks can (and does) accept Ultimate gift cards over the phone. Someome told me it does not work, but did not elaborate further.

      • It is also against the terms and conditions of the Ultimate gift card scheme to use them to purchase any gift cards or vouchers from any participating merchants.

      • noob question, i m not familiar with the game: can you buy these giftcards, use them at officeworks + PB 5% to get 15% off apple products at OW/?

        • +1

Yes, you should be able to.

        • How do you get 15% off Apple products at OW?

          • +1

            @huydn: 10% off here + ow price beat 5%

      • Thanks for the post.

Looks like no go, I think alot of places are clamping down. I use to be able to buy Apple gift cards with Ultimate cards at JB Hifi. I'm not sure if they have blocked them too.

Seems risky now to buy TCN or Ultimate cards to try and get Apple giftcards with them.

I'll probably have to settle for 5% off with rewardsgateway.

        • JB Hi-Fi’s gift card policy says you cannot use an Ultimate or TCN gift card to purchase any gift cards, but I think it is still actually up to staff to enforce this. If you have an Ultimate gift card and use it from a supported mobile wallet in-store at JB Hi-Fi, there is a very good chance the staff member will not think twice to ask you what kind of payment method you want to use. I find it is much riskier to try and swipe a physical gift card on an EFTPOS terminal, because it is unusual to see someone swipe a card these days, so swiping will draw attention to what you are trying to do.

Put it this way, no one has mentioned on OzBargain (as far as I have seen) anything about JB Hi-Fi’s in-store checkouts automatically rejecting Ultimate or TCN gift cards if you are wanting to purchase a gift card, so you are probably fine for now.

I suspect Officeworks is a different case, because they sell a wider range of gift cards (e.g. prepaid Visa gift cards, prepaid eftpos gift cards, Coles Group & Myer gift cards) than JB Hi-Fi (which only really sell entertainment-oriented gift cards), so Officeworks probably felt they had to put a stop to this.

  • Anyone know what business model these are on?
How do they just give off ‘10%’? there must be some sort of loss somewhere surely..

    • +8

      Good question.

I'd say there is a decent amount of wasted value on gift cards that would help cover it.

Little bits of leftover credit, people forget about them, lose them, let them expire.

    • I guess it's the same concept as a membership model. E.g. upfront pay. Cash flow is king. They invest the $ elsewhere.

They are banking on a big percentage of buyers buying these as presents or for a rainy day, which will get used slowly (1 year expiration), or even never…

Also, don't they make $ off the suppliers themselves? I know businesses lose $ to use Uber Eats as a platform for example. But in return, they get the exposure and the larger target customer base.

Getting the money today, is better than waiting for it tomorrow.

Once you have the gift card, the burden is on you to remember to spend it.

  • Sad I already purchased 9.1% off

  • So, let's say I get the "Ultimate For Kids", do I have to specify which company I want the gift card for, or can I mix 'n match the shop where I wish to spend the gift card?
(In which case, I'm buying "money" which is only accepted at those 'allowed' retailers ? )

    • +2

You don't have to specify which company you want the card for

      • Thanks for that.

        That's great to know.

  • Perfect timing to use with PS5 Pro orders at EB Games

    • Is that the offer from Woolies this week more worth to save or better to wait for this one?

      • +1

This deal is better as it is 10% off while the other one works out to be like a 9% discount. Especially since you can just buy the rounded off amount you need rather than ending up with 10% extra to spend later (or be short the final amount).

        • How does the Woolies deal end up only 9% more value? Maths is not my strong suit, but isn't the Woolies offer worth 10%?

          • +1

@suzta: The previous commenter mentioned that 10% bonus value = 9.09090909% discount.

If we look this deal and the Woolworths deal, and consider the $100 Ultimate Her gift card as an example:

            • Through this deal, you pay $90 upfront and get $100 of value on the gift card. The discount is equal to (100-90)/100 = 10/100 = 0.1 (or 10%).

            • Through the Woolworths deal, you pay $100 upfront and get $110 of value on the gift card. The discount is equal to (110-100)/110 = 10/110 = 0.09090909 (or 9.09090909%). The 10% bonus comes from the fact that when you pay $100 upfront, the Ultimate gift card has an extra $10 loaded onto it (which is 10% of the $100 you paid upfront).

            • @WookieMonster: That's a valiant effort on your part, Wookiemonster, but I'm afraid I still don't really get it despite reading it closely. $100 to $110 & $90 to $100 seem the same prima facie. Although, 10% of $90 would be $9 and with Coles you're getting $10 for free, so that seems better. Anyway, I'll take your word for it.

(I'm the type of person who would get that question about a ball costing 10c and the bat costing whatever wrong. Although, I would realise there's a "trick" built into the question, so that's a consolation ha ha.)

      • How about a 20x points offer and the one in the Coles deal? Which one is better?

  • Is this a straight, up front discount? Or do you get "value" back in flybuys points etc as with Woolworths

    • +1

This deal is for an upfront discount.

      • Thank you That's a pleasant surprise.

  • dam, it was 15% last time :(

Need to start looking for freezer isle

  • All those saying they can use these on PS5 Pro and iPhone/ OW price beat, how? It says limit 5x per person with max denominations of $50…

    • Coles’ checkouts will not let you purchase more than 5 gift cards in one transaction. There are also usually signs at Coles stores saying customers can only purchase 5 gift cards. However, there is no mention of this deal being a Flybuys members offer with a cap on the number of gift cards you can purchase, so the only things really stopping you from purchasing more gift cards in subsequent transactions are:

      • Staff choosing to enforce the 5 gift card limit per customer (i.e. refusing to authorise subsequent transactions).
      • A lack of stock at the store you go to.

For example, if you purchase 5 gift cards on one day and then purchase 5 more gift cards the next day at the same store, you will (most probably) be fine. Alternatively, if you purchase 5 gift cards at one store and then travel to another store on the same day, you can purchase 5 more gift cards.

      • And just to confirm, you’d be fine paying for an iPhone pro max at JB with 43x $50 gift cards?, given you can find 43 gift cards.

  • Time to go crazy!
