Is there any reason if my VAG car oil spec isn't listed here but it takes 5w-30 there would be problems using this over one that does?
Have been buying only oils that list the VAG spec

    • Your VAG 5w-30 from Nulon is not this one but that one -> https://www.nulon.com.au/products/engine-oils/apex-plus/apx5… There is a reason why your VAG is not listed in there, only use VAG approved oil.
if it is diesel, better to use an oil that meets VW 505.01 specs (not 505.00), e.g. Penrite enviro + 5w-40.

      • +4

        this sounds weird lol

        • Not weird, 5W-30 VW 504.00/507.00 petrol and diesel respectively. However, 505.01 diesel (5w-40) superior to 507.00 diesel (5w-30).

          • @SYLTB: They are referring to the VAG references.

          • @SYLTB:

            However, 505.01 diesel (5w-40) superior to 507.00 diesel (5w-30).

            Can you explain this part?
I have always used Mobil 1 ESP 5W30 in my Amarok 2.0L BiTDI (2013), but am looking to shorten my maintenance intervals to 10k (from 15k) as its getting up there km (370k), and go a slightly lower quality oil but was thinking hte 507.00 spec was better?

            • @LlamaOfDoom: This is well discussed topic to death on VAG car forums. 505.01 is the default specific VAG oil for diesel before 504.00/507.00 duo introduced by VW to cover all petrol and diesels. 505.01 is for in particular pump duse and long Kms diesel like yours. It needs oil change at 5000 km intervals. 505.01 thicker than 507.00. You better check on TDIclub and myturbodisel forums.

I don't think you're the only one who had a chuckle over this conversation about VAG oil.

      • Should I get this, even if no VAG yet?

    • -3

      My car use 5W-30 Euro.
There was one time I change to this Apex+ oil, thinking it just same 5W-30 with marketing gimmick (it doesn't listed compatible with my car). My car feels like it doesn't have enough power uphill, and constanly lost power on freeway on 90kmh.
All back to normal after using the correct oil.

      • +8

You do realise engine oils don’t act like fuels.

You didn’t lose power because of the wrong engine oil grade.

        • I am not car savvy, I don't know how to describe it. The power not totaly lost. But feel like half hitting clutch on manual.

          • +2

@mfu: With power loss it’s definitely an air or fuel problem, or both

            • +1

@yaozy: Ok thanks. O2 sensor was always issue on my car, so prob just happen to be really bad when I switch to different oil.

      • +4

        Definition of placebo

        • I really hope so, the price different is quite significant. Even with current discount.

      • Is it a Holden Commodore or Ford Falcon by chance?

        • Nah, it a peugeot.

          • +2

@mfu: probably a faulty air sensor, electrics on Peugeots are usually there weak points

            • +2

@Headless: Thats always my issue. I clean up the sensors every week or two and replace it every year, learn from youtube to save some $ on mechanic. Its been good car, just the oxygen faulty that been annoying.

            • @Headless: wonder why? Do they not use OEM electric harness/sensors made in Japan or China etc?

      • Did you put the oil in the fuel tank?

      • The only "real" situation where a car would "lose" power is from using significantly thicker oil than original. And by that I mean using like bloody gear oil (75W-90) in new car like the Toyota that uses 0W-8. It'll be so thick for the pistons to go up and down like as if you were running in air to suddenly running in honey.

But other than that, driving on hot days OR in higher altitudes with less oxygen will have a greater effect on power that simply a different brand of oil. Tbh, I don't think you'll even notice if I put in vegetable cooking oil.

Awesome. Covid pricing officially gone, back to $35 on special for a decent 5L.

    • +9

Try telling the supermarkets that covid pricing is officially gone .

    • You didnt buy oil before Covid obviously.

  • Good oil

strange, both repco and autobarn say this oil fit my car (2014 mazda cx5) but supercheaps said this is NOT fit my car……it happens several time…

    • Check your manual

      • Results are not accurate for my car. I've been using the one in this deal almost exclusively for a few years, no issues.

    • +2

The oil checkers on these websites aren’t very accurate. Check the owners manual and that the grade and specs match.

    • I use this oil in my Mazda 6 which has the same engine as your Mazda cx-5. This is the best oil I have ever used in my Mazda, I have also tried Valvoline and Penrite. The engine is way quieter when I use Nulon.

      • +3

Yeah no. Unless the other oils you used were the completely wrong oil, you cannot hear any difference in engine noise when changing oil brand to another that meets the same specification lol. It's either placebo or you're just remembering incorrectly.

        • I find it hilarious when people say "best oil I've ever used".

          • @vodamerc: Depends, if it's used for stir fry you can tell. Otherwise in a car, you'd be guessin.

  • great oil. been using penrite for years, but they are really expensive now. switched to nulon the last few service and they are equally good if not better. would recommend.

    • I just bought penrite gf-s which is a direct competitor to the one mentioned in the OP for about the same price.

You just have to wait for it to go on special. It was near this price pretty much for the last 3 months. The most recent one I bought in store mid September for $37.

What makes it better? Did you do an oil analysis following use?

  • Good deal but nothing will ever compare to this baby:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/442101

My Ozbargain experience peaked there. There's no high like that again.

    • that must of been the price error / honoured deal of that decade

      • +2

It was pretty good. When I collected mine the guy behind the counter couldn’t believe the price and jokingly told me to take them and get out of the store before management realised.

        • did you get 2 or 1?

          • @Poor Ass: I got 2, from memory I think I tried to order a couple more when I got home but the party was over.

  • Never understood why synthetic oil is better than, what I assume is referred to as organic oil?

    • +1

      referred to as organic oil

It’s often referred to as mineral oil or dino (the joke being it’s made from dinosaurs) oil.

Synth typically resists heat and shearing better than dino, allowing for a longer oil change interval.

    • Synthetic car, Synthetic oil, Synthetic life (mortgage etc).

Organic would be hunter gatherer (no mortgage or stress), natural oil? or food and natural cause of death (usually around age 30 due to infection or bear attack).

  • +1

    Oils ain't oils.

  • Is supercheap easy to get a price beat for stuff like this or will they argue?

    • +1

F*** SCA and their price beat…last time I tried to get them to beat Anaconda's price on an N70T they said they'll beat it by $1

I said "really?" and they said "goodbye!"

      • Just got two bottles price matched at supercheap auto successfully (though they didn’t price beat)

        • Why not just buy from Autobarn than try to match with SCA…

          • @Tam: 15% discounted SCA gift cards to use from deal 2 weeks ago

          • @Tam: SCA 4 mins drive, Autobarn 20 mins…

  • Anyone know if this oil can be used in the newer honda lawn mowers?

Checked other threads of this brand and no one commented on mower use.

    • Multi grade oils are designed to minimise wear on cold engine start ups. They flow better in the cold because they are made from thinner base oil with added viscosity improvers to resist thinning under operation temperature.

The cold flow property probably doesn't matter much in a lawn mower but the VI might shear in certain engine designs, resulting in a thinner than expected oil over time.

If in doubt, refer to your use manual, especially when the device is still under warranty. If not, I probably won't lose sleep on the type of oil I use in a lawn mower. YMMV.

  • Can't believe none of the Castrol Edge 5w30 fanboys have commented yet

  • WheN I checkout its 74.99 even after making an account

    • I just made an account and ordered then. I guess double check you are signed in and signed up for the right member program.

Thanks OP. I like to keep a few bottles on hand for my 2013 Forester. It calls for 0W-20 however burns oil like it's going out of fashion. This seems to slow it down a little.

    • +1

Haha same here, 2016 outback fb25 . the oil light comes on about only 3500kms after service if I used 0-20. Slightly better with 5-30

      • Good cars but they love to consume oil apparently. I have thought about trying a 5W-40 but could be getting too heavy.

        • Why do they burn oil? Do they leak it into combustion chamber?

  • Is it suitable for Honda Civic 2014 ?

    • +1

      Check your manual
