Aldi have one around the same price this week too. No idea of quality comparisson

    • Yep, similar price at $49.99

      • And Bunnings equivalent is $5 cheaper too (but not ATL of $39)

    • +1

Quality is alright. Had one for a couple years and no real issues.

      • +10

        Any imaginary issues?

      • +6

        Reel* issues

        • +3

Yes I did consider that lol

        • Oh I should have scrolled down a little more.

      • No reel issues?

    • +1

Biggest selling point for me was the 3 year warranty.
I think the Mechpro has 1 year, and heaps of others from Bunnings, Hoselink etc are 2 years warranty and 2-4 times the cost.
I think there was one at Bunnings that was 5 years warranty but ~$200

3 years warranty for $50 seemed pretty damn good. Got one for the front and one for the back

      • +2

How do you claim warranty? Send it back at your cost?

        • With Aldi, ring the number on the warranty card and they will give you an authorisation number to take into any store with the faulty product for a full refund. I've had to do it twice in the past. Just make sure you hang on to your proof of purchase.

I have a mechpro and a hoselink. It's not a fair comparison at all. The reel mechanism after 2 years is starting to choke half way but can be jiggled back in like an old corded vacuum reel. I deliberately left at the front to reduce temptation of theft.

    • +3

For clarity, are you describing the Mechpro as inferior? I would hope so at $250+ vs $50.

In your opinion, is the Mechpro decent enough value for a $50 hose reel?

      • For my use case, the cheapness was a selling point to make it less tempting. I wish I could leave a hoselink at the front but that would be unwise.

If you want a proper hose, pay the extra on the next woollies marketplace cashback.

        • Is it junk junk though?
I purcahsed a $50 Bunnings one and took it back immediately as I knew the cheap ass hose would kink when you looked at it, and would drive us more nuts than anything, even for a hose that is rarely used.
Figure I would wait until next Hoselink 15% off deal and grab their new one.

          • +3

@snuke: I have the Mechpro Blue unit. As with any hose, to avoid it kinking, use a trigger nozzle so that the hose is pressurised with the water. Reel it in and then turn off the tap.

I have an old model Hoselink as well and both don't kink.

            • @lomie: I have a trigger attachment and confirm it doesnt kink

        • Buying at Woollies did you mean the Hoselink?
          Thanks

            • +2

@boretentsu: I wish Hoselink didn't use proprietary connectors though. That's why Gardena seems more appealing to me.

              • @CVonC: Holy shit. Proprietary hose connectors? That's heinous.

                • @gakko: The proprietary connectors are actually good but let me warn you if you have random people using your hose, like tradesman for instance, they will break them or lose the o rings because they don’t know how to use them.

My beloved Portuguese renderer who I’ve known for over a decade broke my Hoselink connectors and blocked my toilet in the same day.

I had to add a double tap at the back so people wouldn’t forcefully disconnect the hoselink reel leader.

I think overall the made in Germany Gardena fittings are the best and I use them everywhere else. I also prefer the old school Gardena classic nozzle which I use at the front of the house over the much more expensive multi sprayer I use at the back.

I often find myself taking the front nozzle to the back lol

                  • @h0mbre: Yeah we have gardena stuff out front too and I've found it the best so far. Not that I've tried much but pope sucked. The woollies multi nozzle is surprisingly solid.

I bought one of these in April 2021 for $38, still working great to this day.

    • Any issues with the mechanism / uv affecting the hose & plastic integrity?

      • +1

No issues, cops the western sun for about 4 hours a day

  • This or $50 Aldi one?

    • +1

Easier return and refund at Aldi

  • Anyone recommend a hose that is just on a normal reel (not wall attached type)?

  • +1

Had this same reel approx 18 months. Rewind mechanism is starting to give up, struggles to rewind the last ~1m of hose. Aside from that the fittings, hose etc are not too bad. No kinks or leaks.
Tbh, I hate the fact it doesn't rewind all the way. I like things to work like they're supposed to. So I'll probably spend the ~$250 on a Gardena reel this summer.

    • This may be suitable - https://www.hoselink.com.au/collections/hoses-reels

A Hoselink unit I first used was installed in the rental property and I was impressed with it - good quality materials and easy to wind. Been using it for almost two years now - supposed it had been installed before

I will move out soon and will buy one myself - would be great if there are some discounts at the time!

    • My $200 hoselink 25m high flow struggles with the last metre as well sometimes but I put this down to my usage case and having dirt/mud on the hose sometimes.

      It’s roughly 4 years old

  • I've had so many hose reels break and/or just be a pain to use over the years that I would avoid nearly all of them.
8 years ago I bit the bullet and got a decent industrial strength one from Retracta. Best thingt I've done, it's a pleasure to use everyday.
But more of a long term bargain given the usability value ongoing, was $219 then, the new improved version DR418P-03 is $369 delivered at Sydney tools. So won't be everyone's choice, but I would buy one of these again in a heartbeat.

    • Or you could just have 7 of these hoses on different sides of your house :D

      • I will buy 7 of these and replace all my toilet bidets for better cleaning.

  • came here for some reel jokes….nice.
