Almost ATL price on this 4-pack of Meross Smart Plugs! A fantastic price at $12 each.

  1. Automatically turn off devices/lights after hours to save power
  2. Turn on your WFH office heater every morning as you slide in with your morning coffee
  3. Automate cycle your lights when on holidays to automatically simulate activity (or my social life?)
  4. Toggle your EV charging for optimal Solar charging (when hooked up via Home Assistant)
  5. Automate your bedside bacon breakfast and scramble into work for some co-worker first-aid/TLC

So many uses for these things around the home and they've been my preference after trying many other units. I've found setting a static IP on these has made them rock solid stable with HomeAssistant. Combine with HA Shortcuts or Hey Google and you can easily setup scenes to turn the lights on in the morning or off when you go to bed in the evening.

    Warning that these are gigantic

    • +2

I like how solid they are though. I had some TP Link ones attached to a portable heater for winter and was super scared by how hot they were getting + how flimsy they felt. Never felt very comfortable using them to heat up the bathroom in the mornings before I went in.

Very happy with the product, these worked well for me

      • I have to say they work no problems but have to use with an extension.

        • Yeah the size isn't really a problem with a nice sturdy extension cable. I don't think sensitive electronics should be used with cheap $3 extension cables anyway, I've had so many strip down to bare wire from Kmart.

          https://www.bunnings.com.au/hpm-5m-1-0mm-10a-3-core-heavy-du…

These are everywhere around my house and haven't failed me yet.

      • I second this.
One of mine constantly have 8amp EV charger plugged to it and it's completely fine.

    • +1

Gigantic as in height wise? Or width wise that you can't use the power point next to it (in a double power point)?

      • +12

width wise. You won't be able to use the second power point next to it.

    • +1

they sure do look huge. they came up as a freebie in amazon vine for me, but i saw the girth and passed on them

      • +1

        That’s not what she said

        • +1

she said stop getting crap from amazon vine
          :(

      • hey FoxJump, curious how did you sign up to Amazon Vine and would you recommend it? Do you receive worthwhile items or are they usually janky cheap junk?

        • the amazon gods blessed me and i got an invite one random day.
only notable thing I did was to review things that I buy. one thing got 6 likes and another 1 like.

Some things are useless, and get 1 star from me, others are okay. Sometimes some are amazing.
literally right now i'm using my new wavlink usb-pd-hub with a built in nvme slot which i received 20mins ago.

    • +2

I use and recommend these handy short extension leads

    • +1

Yes large but one use grab Left and Right Double Adaptors for the places that you need to place them next to another plug Example only.

    • Yeah i confirm they’re large. Do not buy unless you can have a plan to use them like me with extension cord etc

  • +8

EV Charging? Personally I wouldn't.. you putting a lot of stress on what is likely very average quality product.

Its unlikely to be built for that kind of long term high power usage.

    • What would you recommend instead?

I have a phase 2 charger for my PHEV (only 16 kWh of capacity) that slow charges from a normal garage socket. Is there a higher durability product that could achieve the same outcome for me so it switches off charging at a certain time / switches on at a certain time?

      • It won't be cheap but you can get an actual EV charger with scheduling built in although I'm surprised because my EV can do the scheduling from the actual car.

        • I literally never realised, thanks guys!

      • There are 15kw versions of these smart plugs, if you need it for scheduled charging, probably best to use your car's programming.

      • Can't you set this in your car's infotainment system?

    • Had an Eko brand from big w that lasted just over a year. It probably ran through about 3500kwh before it just died.

    • I'm not sure how Smart Life works but you can definitely get cross-integration through the Home Assistant meross add-on.

Or you can also buy the HomeKit version for better compatibility and not go through meross if that's what you prefer.

      • +1

Smart Life is for Tuya-based devices, these don't work with it. A lot of people use Tuya which allows for devices like Mirabellow, Deta, Arlec, Crest etc.

  • +6

WARNING - I purchased a couple of these on a previous deal. One died after a few months, replaced under warranty. Then both died shortly after the warranty period.
YMMV but for me, I think you get what you pay for - poor quality units designed with limited life.

    • +2

Meross has said that it was to do with a capacitor from a manufacturer that causes this. They stopped using them in Dec 2023. I'd return your units if you still have them, they will provide a free swap.

      • Just checked. They were within warranty when one failed. But now they are not. I can give them another try if I don't have to pay for shipping.
Do you know where I can find the return process? I assume Amazon won't take them now

        • +1

Just open a case with Amazon and it will still go the manufacturer. They're aware of the issue and I believe are trying to remedy for it. You can always try and see what happens.

      • +1

I threw them out, i tried a couple of times pleading with them but they refused to honour warranty outside of initial 2 years.

        • I think this was before they realised the capacitor issue. Some recent threads where this problem came up mentioned they were able to get them swapped.

          • @JSONBourne: I plan to use it with an electric vehicle charger that draws 10 amps (2300 watts) for continuous charging, up to 12 hours straight. Will the new version handle the load? Does the app record the time of usage?

      • +1

Darn, I threw two away also. Good to know they have tried to remedy this fault.

    • Yeah I stay away for this now. I had two of these and one died right after the warranty period (maybe even within, I didn't bother to get a replacement).

In comparison, I have 4 TP link ones and they re all working fine for much longer. Better software too.

They are huge and block adjacent sockets in a power strip or even adjacent wall sockets sometimes.

Also, I've had random WiFi disconnections in this when the socket is bit far away. TP link kept at the same place works fine without any issues.

    • I keep wanting to get some smart plugs, ideally with energy monitoring, but there's so many cases of these types of units just dying after a few months, which isn't a good time

    • Same here.
      - Had 4 pack and they keys dying one after the other. Ironically that happened few days after upgrading firmware? (so may be alleged planned / forced obsolescence?). Anyway because it was just after 2 year warranty period Meross said they cannot replace them so all 4 of them are in a landfill somewhere… Will not buy them again. Currently using gridconnect as replacement.
      - One more thing I did not like these was because of their huge size. If you plug them onto a standard double gang outlet, you can't use the 2nd port at all.

For something that's supposed to save energy through smart control, if they are failing after 2 years or less are we really saving anything at all.

    Cringe op

  • +2

I've had three of four of these die. I would avoid or at least not use on critical gear. I lost a fridge full of food..

    • +1

That's surprising, but why did you use it on your fridge out of curiosity? I've only used this on items I need to turn on/off remotely and they've been super stable for me.

If you're slamming them 24/7 with a fridge that might be part of the problem, but that's interesting to hear the feedback

      • I suspect it may not be suitable for high power load.

        • I've had them on 2000W heaters for long periods so I'm not sure about that - a fridge only draws about 4kWh per day.

I think more likely these aren't entirely suitable for getting slammed 24/7 by a pretty moderate power draw, which probably isn't the usecase anyway. If you want to know how much your fridge uses slap it on for a day or two, don't keep it on forever hahaha

          • @frowny: "timing mode, compatibility with Alexa aso."

seems like it's marketed as something you would leave On all the time.

            • +1

@ripprind: But like… why do you need this on a fridge, I'm not understanding hahaha

              • @frowny: Why Use on Fridge = I was monitoring how often Fridge was defrost cycling throughout the day and power use. Fridges can get high spikes when kicking into defrost mode. I've had mine connected for several years as too lazy to disconnect but has given me interesting info.
As I have the plugs connected to HomeAssistant, it even warned me that Power was off or using too much power (door left open)!

        • +1

a fridge is definitely not a high power load.

          • +1

@ripprind: Fridge can cause energy spikes which may cause problems and fridges tend to be on and off many times each day. Heaters are only on and off a couple of times each day and you may not use heaters everyday.

          • +1

@ripprind: No not a high power BUT will spike beyond 2400w when cycling. Regardless, have never had an issue with my plug on the fridge.

        • +1

I would agree with this - after reading Ozb comments for years on these (and owning many of them myself with zero failure rate - used for LED garden lighting only), all failure comments seem to relate to high load, in particular immediate high current like the spooling of a compressor etc

        • Fridges (and/or freezers) are not high power loads! Depending on the size they are in the 500WpH ballpark

      • Fridges are nothing, I had a big w one plugged into my car charger. Died after about 3500kwh

      • +1

I was tracking the energy usage and wanted a solution where I could read easily ie without moving fridge.

The second one for my entertainment unit is still working and the one for my pc died so using a non smart power monitor.

    • Surprising. Have been using them with my home office setup and haven’t have any issues since a year I’ve been using them.

Have used them with the boiler as well. Works fine for me.

  • Does anybody use these with 'Home Assistant'?

    • +2

      Yes they work great

      • do you use the HACS Meross LAN extension?

        • Actually the reason I ask is because I'm keen to get a Home Assistant setup going and interested to know how to configure these.

    • Yep, easy to set up and pulls the data through with ease.

I use mine to help create a sleep timer for my computer or track the usage of my server

  • +3

Idk what happened with other people's batches, but mine has been great. I've used it with my heat pump hot water tank for probably more than a year now. It's physically outside under the house eave but covered with a plastic box lol.

I have solar and use it to automatically heat water 1.5 hours after sunrise stop 1.5 hours before sunset. All intergrated into the Meross app and the timings all still when the internet goes down.

  • +3

Just as an alternative, Bunnings have been doing the Arlec GRID version of this as the standard price for a 2 pack for $20 the last few weeks. They're the series 2 version so can be flashed with ESPHome if that's your thing as well

    • +1

nice, do you have a link outlining the process?

    • Yeah replaced meross ones to them. They have been okay so far. Do not have finer data as meross did though and the apps for both are not really good UX

  • +1

I have a set of these I bought ages ago and they're so good. They've actually been the most reliable device on my HomeKit setup.

Edit: didn't realise these aren't the HomeKit version.

    • +1

Homekit version is also on sale, in the description :)

  • Matter plugs only for me from now on. Solid connection, local, instant, simple home automation integration.

    • This. TP link matter version works great for me.

      • Me too they are great with my hubitat setup

  • +2

Bought these 4 pack 2 years ago and they stopped working just bit over year of continuous use

    My experience:
Functionality, app, energy tracking is good, wifi coverage good

Bulky most likely if you have a dual power point you only would be able to use one

After power out they might not turn back on automatically without pressing the button. So lets say you fit one of these in a fridge or power point is in a tight space and the power goes out, don't be surprised that it stayed off and your fridge is still off. Issue is if restarting it might not be physically on so you can't use the App to turn the appliance on all the time

Indication of breaking is when you press the power button and a spring sound comes on and then clicks off straight away

They definitely work but I can't see it working for more than 2 years

In addition lets say you are travelling for awhile, I would not recommend to use this plugged in for your fridge or freezer as it's not constantly on if faulty and does not bypass power when it is off even when the power point is on. Only bypass power is possible when it's physically turned on. So when going away, maybe just plug your fridge or freezer directly into the wall instead

    Overall I wouldn't buy again

Update: reading above there might be a capacitor fault with some batches… but still I wouldn't leave it plugged in for fridge and freezers when going away

  • I've tried a few different ones and I really like the Freshlink for value and size as they don't block the slot next to it.
    https://amzn.asia/d/7lTqu7t
Tuya based, can create the helper in HA for power read out and tracking.

  • How does this compare to Ikea's one? https://www.ikea.com/au/en/p/tretakt-plug-smart-10556517/

Given you have to buy a hub.

  • Can anyone recommend a smart plug that won't overheat ? I will be using it with an EV granny charger that draws 10 amps (2300 watts) for continuous charging, up to 12 hours straight, and would like it to record the time of usage.

    • +1

I wouldn't trust any of these things with a continual 10A load. I know they're rated for that, but the huge number of failure stories is enough to not want to trust them on anything critical.

  • +1

I bought a non-homekit 4 pack of these over a year ago. Have been using them on low amp devices like lamps etc. All of them have been flawless so far. I have them connected into Google Home which runs the automation routines. At $12 each, they are worth it IMHO

  • Anyone think this is safe to use w like a 650w pc or smth…

    • Its fine with that kind of wattage.

  • I have used 6 of these for the last 3 years. Only one has died although I think my old pool pump worked it too hard and it lived in a moist pump room which doesn’t help.

Apart from its large size ive found them reliable although easily fixed using a double adapter.

Energy reporting has been very useful. Especially for monitoring high power consumption equipment ie. heaters and pool pumps.

  • If you are going to be using homeassistant it’s probably better to wait for IKEA’s inspelning to be available since it’s a zigbee device.
