Do I Need to Replace My Tyre? Picture Attached Help Needed

Hi all, I had a bad day today and just to add salt to wound I ran over the kerb on front left side and damaged my tyres.

Picture 1
Picture 2

I went to Tempe Tyres the guy on the floor was desperate to sell me a brand new tyre. However, after I spoke with the manager he said it’s not required. He said once you see white thread that’s dangerous.

It will cost me $380 a tyre. I got one transferred to Fairfield and told them I may change my mind tomorrow. Wheel alignment etc more.

I’m here now to seek your opinion. I bought the tyres few years ago after posting in OzBargain, I had a great time so far.

Do you think after looking at the pictures that I am good or it needs to be replaced?

OP, you can never risk your life with the safety of your tires. If they are damaged, I’d recommend that you change them.

I've done 250+ for extended periods (read: hours and hours) on Autobahns with similar scuffs & scrapes.

These tyres are fine for use here.

Geez , this guy loves the curbs . Maybe if he stays away from those his tyres and rims might fear better !

If you have to ask then you are not sure, so go with your instincts. If you have kids then think of them……

If the missing chunks of tyre were not required then the tyre would be thinner…..

Get a new tyre or better two so that the tread is the same and the car will not drift due to different tread grip.

    • +2

If the missing chunks of tyre were not required then the tyre would be thinner…..

Witbin reason, yes. But they do add additional thickness to sidewalls to prevent a blowout in a vase such as this.

    • That's not strictly true. Tyres aren't designed to be made at the bare minimum tolerance with no capacity for damage absorption. I can't quite tell how deep it is from OP's picture, but you can definitely take off a few millimetres off the side wall without any real loss of integrity or increase in risk

      • +1

looks way more than a few mm if you can see that it chunked off.

Low profile rim/tyres are not for u

    • -5

      What does that even mean?

      • +4

Low profile rim/tyres more susceptible to kerb rash…

      • +17

Tyres with bigger side walls protect the wheels when they are forcefully introduced to the kerb against their consent.

      • It means trade in for a Toyota Prado.

With that amount of side-wall damage, I'm surprised it didn't blow already.

    • LMFAO

A quick Google search suggests the manager is correct. Extra rubber may be there to protect the rim. You could take it somewhere else to get a second opinion if concerned.

  • I'd get a new tyre ..

  • -2

I’m not here for online polls. I used to have run flats continental tyres. They were bumpy and the ride wasn’t smooth. After I changed the tyres to someone on OZB everything changed. They were so good.

I wash my car regularly but due to few recent trips, sickness and fatigue I couldn’t take my car for a clean.

Yes, I’m all for safety hence I’m doubting the manager from the floor.
Tempe is selling each for $380. Is there any other place that sells cheaper? Sorry I need to research more tonight. I bought 4 brand new tyres Feb 2022. It ran for around 22k km.

Should be able to get replacement for less than $300 each. I would replace both rears, move the old rears to the front and get a wheel alignment.

      • Can you find me the same tyre for $300 with installation and disposal of old tyre?
I can’t swap the front with the rear. They are different sizes. Changing the front sets would require $380 times 2, not sure if I’m willing to take that far.

        • +4

Staggered wheels suck in situations like this. That's a pretty skinny/odd size tyre for a 19 so seems expensive for all brands. So no, I can't help out. With 20k+ kms on one softish compound tyre I'd definitely be looking at replacing both fronts. Keep the good one as a spare just in case.

          Level 4 - delivered false hopes ✅

        • Bob Jane has tyres in your size starting from $162. Kumho’s from $262.

Have a look around. Tempe aren't what they used to be price wise.

          • @ColtNoir: Kumho PS51 and Good Year F1 are two different categories of tyres.

            • +1

@MS Paint: I agree. He wanted cheaper though.

              • +1

@ColtNoir: Good idea to replace both fronts with Kumho. A bit more but at least matched front pattern and wear.

      • When I worked in tyres people that bought only two would get the new tyres at the front. Not the back.

        • +2

Probably mostly front wheel drive cars.

          • +3

@MS Paint: No. Advice was to have the better thread in the steering end of the vehicle.

We did heaps of cops cars in those days, Falcons and commodores.

But I just checked in the manufacturers recommendations and you are right. They recommend to fit new tyres at the back for stability.

So thank you. I corrected an old misconception today.

            • +1

@munecito: The number one reason to put new tyres on the rear is because of aquaplaning.
The most dangerous thing that can happen on worn tyres is aquaplaning and when it happens you can lose complete control of the car and it doesn't matter what car it is, whether it's front wheel drive, rear or awd, a sports car, or if you are the best driver in the world.
If you have the new tyres with deep tread in the rear you are less likely to aquaplane in the rear, oversteer and spin out.

So there's other damage we are not yet aware of?

  • +5

I wouldn't replace it. Those 40 series Goodyears have a stepped sidewall design to protect your alloys from kerb/gutter rash. They've done a great job.

        Schwing! 🍆

  • -1

It’s funny how things go mountain out of a mole.
The damage was in shitty Wolli Creek village parking. It’s the narrowest curve right to exit to the other side (far end of the village parking). There was a guy few inches behind me as I had to go back and take a wider turn. I politely requested few times but the man kept looking at me and did not move back.
I should have sat there until he moved his car backwards but my bad I took it on me to wrestle the car to exit and bang I scratched the car. I regret my actions which is now causing me anxiety and stress.

I’ll go to nearby tyre shop tomorrow to take a second opinion but I bet they will want to sell a tyre.

The manager at Tempe tyre had enough customers and was closing time so he just sent me off. His floor boy wanted to sell but not today as they were closing at 5pm and I went there at 4:10pm. Both had their agendas and I really needed unbiased advice or opinion.

Sadly the OzB guy who recommended me the set of tyres 2 years back deactivated his account. I went to the previous post to look for him.

I hope I get a real advice. I sometimes overspend on things that doesn’t need to be replaced. Money is tight at the moment and $380 -$400 can help heaps.

I’ll look into Jaycar and Bob Jane.

    • +1

If you ask a tyre outlet you'll be up for a new tyre. If it makes you nervous, find a secondhand one and pay $30 to strip and re-fit. Plenty to choose from:

    • Sorry to hear. I went to Bob Jane a few weeks ago for a gouge in a tyre, totally different type of tyre though, it was a Bridgestone Alenza, the guy said it was fine. Each tyre and each gouge is different I guess.

  • +1

Just did a search on Jax Tyres each one is $585 WTF
How come it’s so much cheaper at Tempe tyres?

    https://www.jaxtyres.com.au/tyres/goodyear/eagle-f1-asymmetr…

    • +3

Tempe are normally quite cheap. I’ve used them to price match even with shipping to my local shop before.

  • +4

I'd risk it and put it on the back.

Level 7c - Thrifty but risky, caution advised. ⚠️💀

  • Tempe is my only option. I can’t find this at any other store in Sydney.

Previously 2 years ago I bought from Tempe Tyres at $290 each for front tyres.

  • -5

How do I get Tempe tyres to apply the same price which they offered 2 years ago?

Also is it okay for me to keep the other front tyre? Shall I get wheel alignment done too? This was done 5 months ago after a tyre puncture on the rear wheel.

    • +1

How do I get Tempe tyres to apply the same price which they offered 2 years ago?

      Good luck!

Also is it okay for me to keep the other front tyre?

      Depending on its wear, maybe.

Shall I get wheel alignment done too?

Maybe. But if you do, replace the other front tyre.

In all honestly, just go to a tyre shop and speak to them. If you feel like you are being screwed over, go to another shop.

    • Is it 4matic or RWD?

      • +1

Do you really want the OP to reply with what’s the difference?

        • +2

I was hoping they would say it's a 5 speed automatic.

          • @MS Paint: I’ve noted some previous comments you’ve made on the topic ;-)

    • +1

      How’s your flux capacitor?

  • +10

Good God OP, trade your Merc for a Camry so replacement parts are within what you’re happy spending. 19 inch rims: as a guide tyres will not be cheap to replace.

You need a new tyre. Side wall damage = new tyre

    • +4

I love the "look at me I'm rich in my MB" to "WTF, I can't afford that" attitude so many Euro drivers have in Australia.

      • +1

I'm waiting on a future post about premature tyre wear because he didn't think he needed a wheel alignment after doing that much damage to the side wall

  • +3

Sell the car, you can't afford it
    .

  • That first photo would go a lot deeper into those torn sections than the photo will show.

Im very very surprised the tyre shop would say its safe.

    Replace immediately.

  • +1

    Replace the tyre, it's dangerous.
While you're at it, get the brake disc checked and probably changed too - it looks dangerously worn to me.

And when you've done all that (on both or maybe 4 wheels), you can have my username

  • That's some fine parking skills on display there.

  • +3

Okay I’m procrastinating and these are all the instances where the OP has basically implied they’re too cheap to own a Merc:

Thanks to some of you with some good positive feedback and support. For those with finding the time on researching my previous posts etc and giving ill wishes … I wasn’t expecting much on a public post.

FYI for years on I have received very good feedback and support from some OZB and glad there are few good souls that prevail against negative thoughts.

    Back to business.

I have 100% decided to change my front tyre that I damaged yesterday.
Now the question is do I absolutely need to replace the other front tyre on the drivers side?

I’ll also do all 4 wheels alignment $70
    Front tyre $380 each.

    • +3

Do both. For tyres always in pairs for front or rear wheel drive cars. If they were less than 6 months old you might be fine but you said 2022 so 2 years, uneven wear on tyres cannnnn cause issues, also different levels of grip on tyres may also cause issues with driving and acceleration in general.

      • +2

Thanks mate. It’s good to hear some positive feedback. Some of the other feedbacks are around that as well. I called Tempe booked two tyres price haggled to $365 each plus $50 for all four wheel alignment.

Not happy with this but don’t want to risk lives of family.

Ask for Tyroola Tyre Protect for 18 and 19 inch tyres = $30 (or similar insurance)

Get extra protection for tyres 18 and 19 inch tyres with Tyroola Tyre Protect.

✅Pay a one-time premium per tyre (fitting cost is not included).

✅Coverage is for 12 months or until legal tread depth.

✅Includes repairable/non-repairable punctures, fractures, cuts, and kerb damage.

    • Tempe said they have nothing to do with Tyroola. Unfortunately Tyroola has no such tyres I’m looking for :(

  • Yes ✅

  • +1

Personally, I'd replace it - I don't care what the experts say.

    But each to their own.

  • -1

Find a Mercedes wrecker or backstreet User Tyre dealer, and buy one with similar wear to your existing tyre. You might get <> $100-150 fitted.
If it's a runflat, th eside walls are supposed to be bulletproof, but I don't haver to drive it
    I'm assuming it's a factory tyre.
Then replace both at the approprate time.
I had a Lexus X with 18 Fronts and 19 rears. Never again.

  • I had a flat tyre and took it to a well known mechanic/tyre chain.
(NRMA put my space saver on)

He examined it in front of me. 2 bits of metal (I knew that already) and he informed me that both were unrepairable due to the angle of the punctures.

He wanted to sell me a new tyre. 1 day wait $252.

I then went to an exclusive tyre chain and they took my car off me. And made me sit down for 30min. He came back in and said they fixed the puncture. I said I thought there were two? He said there was but it hadn’t gone through.

I left a scathing review for the first place.

Moral of the story; getting a second opinion is sometimes worth it.

    ✅ Random tyre story

  • -2

It will be fine as long as you dont drive it

    • +2

      kerb on a curve 🤔

      • You know your things well:)

        • for you:)
  • +2

Honestly, its fine. Tyres are designed to take a beating and that is literally barely scratching the surface.

Eagle F1's are also a solid good quality tyre.

On the contrary, replacing them with a no name china brand new tyre will be more dangerous than that little chip (not saying you would, but I see far too many of these on the roads)

  • -6

the tyres were made in 2021, its time for a change anyway

  • I would not be replacing that tire until it reaches the wear indicator.

    • It’s on the side wall. Is there an indicator on the side?

  • S'knackered
