Do I Need to Replace My Tyre? Picture Attached Help Needed

Hi all, I had a bad day today and just to add salt to wound I ran over the kerb on front left side and damaged my tyres.

I went to Tempe Tyres the guy on the floor was desperate to sell me a brand new tyre. However, after I spoke with the manager he said it’s not required. He said once you see white thread that’s dangerous.

It will cost me $380 a tyre. I got one transferred to Fairfield and told them I may change my mind tomorrow. Wheel alignment etc more.

I’m here now to seek your opinion. I bought the tyres few years ago after posting in OzBargain, I had a great time so far.

Do you think after looking at the pictures that I am good or it needs to be replaced?

  • My understanding is the sidewalls of low-profile tyres are stronger than standard profile tyres. In saying that, personally, my risk-adverse nature would cause me to change the tyre. I wouldn't gamble with the lives of myself, my family or the general public. I'd replace that tyre. If I was 100% never going over 50km/h, then perhaps I'd drive on it for a short time as failure of the sidewall of 1 tyre is most likely manageable at that speed. But it I was going to be driving faster, say 80km/h, I would 100% be replacing the tyre ASAP. Single tyre failure at that speed is going to be much more impactful and less manageable.

TLDR; buy a new tyre or tyres.

  • Yeah change the tyre. Dont need wheel alignment unless your car is pulling to a side or steering wheel is not straight.

Also what is all this level stuff? Can someone explain to me please

  • you'll be fine, but to help the economy you could buy another

  • It will be fine.

  • local wreckers sell tyres for $50. my local will fit parts on but some don't. anyway, another spot fits and balances for $10/tyre (few years ago). After that, an alignment is like $70.

  • Looks like you just damaged the extended rubber rib that is there to protect the rim from kerb damage. I think it will be fine for now

  • If you don't want to spend much, you can go for used tyres of decent brands, which could still have 70-80% life left. Blacktown and surrounding has several shops that sell used tyres OR you can call some wreckers and find out who sells (and fits) them. ~$300 for four tyres sold and fitted usually.

  • I can't believe OP wasn't too embarrassed to share the pics let alone the relatively stupid qn…dude your tyre is missing chunks!

  • I wouldn't mess with the one thing that holds me on the road. Replace.

Dude you drive a Merc with low profile tyres. I don't think this should even be a question.

  • High yield investment vehicle
