  • I always order my minoxidil through pharmacysavings. Good pricing and speedy delivery. I never received the bonus item that was included last time I ordered, but didn’t really need it anyways.

How is it working for you?

    • +6

Just looking back on the last deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/841823 I dont think there were any bonus items offered with the deal, if I've missed packing something on a previous (older) deal, send a PM happy to post it out.

Missed opportunity to make the bonus item a comb.

I was holding out for the gravity boots, hair massager and t-shirt.

  • Any access to topical finastride/ Monoxidil combo.

      • @jason101
        That's oral medication.

Was looking for a topical (ie Morr-F)?

    • If you have Finasteride, you can make your own by adding to the Minoxidil bottle.
      Plenty of information on reddit

      • Cheers. Tried it ?

        • I havent, but the minoxidil solvent (alcohol based) is good enough to disolve the finasteride. You just have to calculate the amount of fin needed for a bottle of 180ml.

Im on oral fin 1mg and min 2.5mg and topical ketoconazole x4 weekly , cant be bothered with greasy hair from the topical

          • @easternculture:

I'm on oral fin 1mg and min 2.5mg and topical ketoconazole x4 weekly

Hey, that's pretty much my regimen too.

I do oral minox 2.5mg bd. And ketoconazole x2-3 weekly.

I'm currently titrating my fin down slowly. Adding a day to my 1.25mg quarter tabs, i.e. changed from 5 days (1mg daily) to 6 days (~0.8mg daily). I'm aiming to get to 0.5mg daily over the next 12-18mo if hair is unchanged, as expected.

There isn't a lot of clear data, but we know serum and tissue DHT levels are suppressed by similar if only slightly less amounts when you compare 0.2mg to 1mg, but it's less clear about the downstream outcome (i.e. actual hair retention/regrowth). Experience with patients suggest that individual variability exists, obviously, but that most men could probably get same or similar results by using a dose 0.4mg to 0.8mg.

The benefit of a lower dose is, even if asymptomatic (clinical side-effects absent) you can have relative differences in testosterone benefits, such as better energy, mood, body composition (bone mineral density, body fat/muscle %), and sexual function.

And so, basically why not the lowest effective dose that gets the same result.

It really does if you're just starting to lose hair. If you're already bald, don't waste your time and money.

      • +1

for that you need a turkey trip

        • +2

Honestly you don't need a turkey trip but cheaper offer in New Bombay. I have done my transplant in 3 days with 4000 graphs & medicines all included for $2000AU. My scalp was literally bald- had no hair at all 2 years back.
However I have also tipped the consultants $200 for giving me great results in such a quick time and with absolute care. If any one is keen let me know and I can arrange a few things including staff speaking in english, cheaper for accommodation & food. Anything for Ozbargainners Team. Love you Guys.

    • +4

For me it caused a few thick hairs to sprout, but otherwise it's ineffective. If you already have a bald patch then nothing will make those follicles active again. Once it's gone it's gone.

      • How long did you use it for?
Some people dont see results until after 1 year. Also, you hair follicles may not be producing enough enzyme that converts the min to the active compound so see if your GP is keen on starting oral min

        • A couple of years, and then stopped as it seemed to have little to no effect. Perhaps it's more effective as a measure to help slow down hair loss, but it's not possible to know how effective it is unless you apply minoxidil to only one side of the head and compare.

          • +1

@Cluster: Someone should try applying just one side monoxidil.

And report back to ozbargain in 1 year.

          • @Cluster:

it's not possible to know how effective it is unless you apply minoxidil to only one side of the head and compare.

Or take a before and after photo

      • @Cluster: Transplant will & I can show my old photos with bald scalp & new photos of the hulk 🤪

    • +3

      It depends on the person.

It’s definitely better if you’re just starting to thin. In my case, it stopped my thinning crown in its tracks, my hairline thickened up, and it stayed like that for a decade.

Then I went away for a week to deal with an emergency at a remote site, forgot to take it, and I had dramatic shedding of hair. I started using it again when I was back, but my hair never quite got back to as thick as it was. If you use it, you can’t stop, even for a week.

Over the past few years, my hair has started to thin despite using it consistently, but I’m close to 50 now, and have been using it for 20 years. It’s held off the inevitable for a good couple of decades, and my thinning is still very mild compared to how bald my grandfathers were and Dad is.

On the other hand, I have friends who say it “did nothing”, so YMMV.

      • -2

bruh no way after one week it stops it like that, anyways i had a slight thinning crown, started taking it 3 months ago from the chemist warehouse version, also generic its the 5 month pack. it definitely filled out the crown and for that i can say it works, but if you have huge bald spots it probably wont have a huge effect. you need turkey for that.

    • +1

I have a widows peak with a receding hairline, and was starting to bald at the crown. My testosterone levels were normal. Minoxidil made the hair grow back at my crown. It did nothing to my hairline (one your hair is gone, it's gone), but it did make the thinning hair their thicker, so it feels like whatever hair I have left has more volume.

  • thoughts on finasteride tablet 5mg?

    • I been taking it for the past 8 months. I cut it into 6 pieces and take it everyday.

Hair looks the same so I guess it's working

      • any side effects?

        • +2

No sides for me so far

          • @easternculture: cool. I have a full set of hair. May be slight receding hairline. 38yo. Keen on starting so that i dont loose hair and protect my hair as long as possible.

            • @Aap Ke Papa: One advice that worked for me. Aside from genetics try washing with less frequency. I dropped from twice a week to once a month now. It works. Shampoo strips and makes your hair fragile. Put coconut oil in there 24 h before you wash. It works and that's all I can say.

Sure initially you will have more greasy hair so rince it daily. But you'll see the difference

              • @Raj09: Mix 6-7 parts coconut oil with 3-4 parts rosemary oil. The rosemary oil works as a natural DHT blocker for hair follicles

            • @Aap Ke Papa: Im not sure if i had hair thining or MPB (dad has full hair, uncle is bold). GP advised to trial it and seems to have made hair fuller when i compared pics from a few years back. Just seems i always had thin hair from pics but never took notice until last year. But as long as the big guy is functional, ill stay on fin i reckon. The other benefit is your sperm is not functional while on fin so no unexpected suprises haha

        • 🤣 no. I know what you're referring to. All my mates didn't take it for the same reason. Your junk will work.

Your doctor won't prescribe you 5mg if you haven't taken it before. If your lucky cut it into 6.

Most likely you'll get 1mg, cut it in half and take everyday

      • how do you manage to cut it into 6 even pieces?

        • Pill cutter from pharmacy. I use sharp scissors

        • I use a large pet nail clipper, it's not 100% but very close.

      • FYI…

Frequency, or interval between dosing, is of little importance.

Although the half-life of fin is relatively short, the downstream action (inhibition of target enzyme, 5α-reductase) generally takes more than 30 days to return to baseline levels, and typically several months to correlate with its phenotypical outcome, i.e. hair loss.

What that means is you can have a lot of flexibility in how frequently, or infrequently, you dose. For example, a very reasonable regimen that's used by many is one 5mg dose every 5 days, or every 1 week. In theory, you could even slow that down to monthly using a higher dose, though I haven't seen this done.

That might be helpful because a fin tab is relatively small and I imagine a cut into x6 is a bit finicky, and you lose a small amount with each cut. I personally have cut into quarters.

    • Been on fin 1mg and min 2.5mg for nearly 1 year now. Have noticed hair is more fuller when comparing to pics for approx 5 years ago.

      • Is your oral minox the Loniten 10mg tablets? Trying to get some info to take to the GP, thanks mate :-)

        • +1

Yeah loniten. I even got it on pbs lol

          • @easternculture: Thanks mate! I'd been using a compounded topical solution of Finasteride/Minox but was coming in at $80 and it stiiiiiiiiiiinks (smell wise as well as price wise) I've got Finasteride 5mg tablets here ready to cut up that I'm yet to use so will speak to the doc and see what he thinks about Minox tablets as well.

Have you noticed hair growing all over besides the top of your noggin since starting tablets?

            • @MBix: Yeah light hair growth all but they still look invisible unless you look really close. Apparently, the excess hair falls off when you stop min.

          • @easternculture: $30 on the PBS?

    • +1

Be careful not to overdose Finasteride as it affects your sexual activities when taken in excess.,

    • +2

I've been taking Finasteride for almost 20 years. 38 years old. My hair looks better now than when I was in my teens.

    • +2

You still need finastride to maintain those hair

      • Exactly, everyone just think get a hair transplant and it's sorted.

        • Yes, Use me if needed. Happy to help all fellow Ozbargainners.

    • You have to use minoxidil after the transplant or it keeps receding where it would have

      • The doctor told my friends to take fin. They didn't listen and 5 years later they need another transplant 🤣

  • when selecting bonus item as Paracetamol, it shows as sold out

  • -2

Is it real minoxidil or just fake Chinese minoxidil?

  • I also started to lose hair (can see gaps at couple of places), lots of Gray hair as well. Didnt know about this, heard first time (didn't research though). How it works or I can say does it work? Is there any specialist I have to go to check out and get prescription?

Edit: just saw a video and it is saying that once you use minoxidil, you have to continuously use it every day.

    • From Gemini:

Minoxidil is a medication used to treat hair loss in both men and women. It works by stimulating hair follicles to grow new hair and prolonging the growth phase of existing hair.

      Here's how it works:

      • Blood Vessel Dilation: Minoxidil relaxes blood vessels in the scalp, increasing blood flow to hair follicles.
      • Hair Growth Stimulation: This increased blood flow provides hair follicles with more nutrients and oxygen, promoting hair growth.
      • Growth Phase Extension: Minoxidil can also extend the growth phase of hair, reducing shedding.

      No prescription needed in Australia.

      • I understand that we don't need prescription. My comment was related to visit specialist to identify the underlying issue and diagnose of the hair loss and they might provide prescription.

Do people go to specialist first before using any treatment?

        • GP can start you on some oral/topical , but at the end of the day, MPB is hard to treat.

        • You would likely need a scalp biopsy to confirm. But look at your family history of thin hair/baldness and that would give you a rough idea

  • Bought this, i'm 23 and my corners have been thinning since i was 21, relatively speaking they look the same when they started thinning 2 years ago, definitely curious to see if it helps

    • -5

Stop washing hair too often! 😊

    • Mine started the exact same way at that age too, 21. It's called temporal recession ("the corners" at the front).

The recession will advance back deeper. And the vertex (top back of head) will begin to thin. This can advance until the rest of the top thins remarkably. Take a look at the Norwood scale for reference.

The key is that temporal recession is either not responsive or very partially responsive to treatment. It'll generally advance gradually with time regardless. Medication is much more effective for the vertex and the rest of the top.

I'm now 37 and have used minox for nearly 10 years, and fin for about 6 years. My temporal recession is fairly deep giving me a widow's peak type appearance, but I reversed some minor vertex thinning as I intervened early enough and my top has normal thickness.

The advice would be to use minox, if starting topical, over the whole top of your head and don't focus too much on your temples, and monitor for thinning of the vertex when you will need to consider further treatment (e.g. fin).

      • Nah, no thinning yet on my vertex, my dad has no thinning there either nor does my grandparents. My hair currently is still very thick, it just the corners. I don't think i'd ever take fin, dont wanna (profanity) up my hormones on fin.

        • Androgenetic alopecia is primarily genetically determined, though it's not possible to predict the degree of effect on offspring from the phenotypes of other family members as it involves many different genes and a complex interplay between them.

The vast majority (almost all) of men, and many postmenopausal women, will be affected, but at varying degrees and rates of progress.

Noticable hair loss in your 20s/30s, classically starting with temporal recession, is likely to indicate a higher propensity to the male pattern of alopecia.

5α-reductase inhibitors like fin used in low doses for hair loss require a more detailed and nuanced understanding of research data to grapple with the risk/benefit balance. In short, it's considered a safe medication at no more than 1mg daily with less than 2% of men reporting reversible side-effects.

          • @muwu: let's say i was to get a prescription of oral fin, would 0.5mg be sufficient depending on how i react to taking topical min? never taken it before, so not sure if i'll be receiving any side effects

            • @cephh: Most men will start with topical minox and gauge the response first, at least 6-12 months.

The caveat with topical minox is that it typically leads to non-compliance (some men maintain it, but most don't), because twice daily applications are a bit arduous to keep doing every day indefinitely, and it can interfere with styling or a sense of hygiene/dryness. That's why the ongoing benefit of minox is usually achieved with oral dosing, and another reason why fin is considered.

Should also note that fin does almost all of the heavy lifting when comparing treatment options. 5α-reductase inhibitors are really the only effective treatment.

Yes, 0.5mg daily would be a good starting dose, and hopefully a good end dose. I typically recommend titrating most people within the 0.4-0.8mg daily equivalent range, and starting low to gauge the response and any side-effects. The regimen can be really flexible because daily dosing isn't necessary, the frequency can be spread out if needed, so alternative starting regimens could be 1mg x3/week, or 1.25mg (quartered 5mg tabs) x2-3/week.

For someone that is showing male pattern hair loss in young adulthood, especially from teenage years to 20s, they are likely to have a faster progress of loss. The earlier the intervention the better to retain hair for longer, though the expectation is that it will progress eventually even on medication, but the difference might be decades (cf. middle/late age instead of young). Depending on what the patient values will depend on what they would like to consider.

              • @muwu: Sweet, can a normal gp prescribe fin?

                • +1

                  @cephh: Yes.

However, many aren't experienced with treating androgenetic alopecia because it's essentially a cosmetic condition (but also one related to emotional health) and is not a part of RACGP core training or much of their practice experience. If inexperienced, the GP will be cautious and refer on to a dermatologist. Dermatologists are the medical specialists who train in androgenetic alopecia, though it's rarely a focus for them, they will address it (private consult fees apply, some Medicare rebate usually available).

An experienced GP can prescribe it after consulting with you.

Best to be knowledgeable in the subject and prepared to try consulting with more than one GP to find a happy fit, or otherwise be willing to be referred to a dermatologist.

                  • +1

@muwu: Got finastride today, GP recommended that i can start off with 0.5 mg to see how i go after a few months he recommend to up the dosage, (he prescribed 1 mg dosage and told me to cut it)

Full head of black hair into my late 40s though, so can't complain.

    • I trialed it on my eye brows and can see them slightly thicker and fuller. But again, could be from the oral min

    • Some people have success with beards, and surprisingly the results seem to be permanent if the vellus hairs transition.

      Have a look at: https://www.reddit.com/r/minoxbeards

    • I’ve found some results! There’s a reddit community for this. Initially did with dermaroll but it’s such a pain to do. Just got back on track with regular application of topical Minoxidil onto the facial hair area again.
