  • These types of knife blocks are terrible. A magnet for dust and food to be trapped inside.

    • A magnet for dust and food to be trapped inside.

Umm.. you're supposed to wash the knives before you put them back?!?

And unless you're talking about magnetic knife strips, you'll find a lot of knife blocks will also have this problem. Even on knife strips, dust settles regardless.

      • Magnetic knife strips can easily be cleaned. These slots in these blocks are narrow, it's hard to clean dust build up. Food crumbs can still make their way inside where you prepare food. In the same way food gets flung onto the kitchen floor, behind appliances etc.

Of course knives are cleaned but even after washing if not completely dried moisture can trap particles or growth of mould or bacteria, leading to contamination over time. Same with oils. Even miniscule. I've recently had to throw out a block due to mould.

Hope you get my point. I like magnetic strips as well as keeps the knives sharper for longer between sharpening.

        • Yeah but most knife blocks are exactly that.. a block. Some are metal/stainless steel which still harbours bacteria and blunts knives.

The only other alternative to a knife strip is one of those upright knife holders which are really not a block anyway.
