If possible id spend a little more and get a 780M IGPU.

    • whats the minimum processor required to get 780M?

cause whats the point paying extra for better iGPU when you already have Oculink and can use external graphics card anyway?

Otherwise, its probably better to just get something cheaper than this that doesn't have Oculink.

      • Definitely don't buy this if you want to use a graphics card - just buy an actual gaming machine for $748 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/868308 instead that can take a graphics card (and includes one) without all the problems and expense of trying to do it externally.

        • Different use case. Thats pretty much the same as having arguments about gaming laptops vs gaming desktops.

I myself don't think I'll convert a MiniPC into a gaming system. But some people like that flexibility to be able to have a low-powered system but can still connect to external GPU where required.

Perhaps read more into Oculink itself cause the people who find the use of Oculink are the ones who are not interested or don't have access to a desktop motherboard with direct access to PCIe slot.

@meong: The problem with the external graphics card is that you need to buy a power supply and a bracket to hold the card - why on earth would you do that when you can just buy a gaming PC that already has those things inside it ?

The laptop use case is completely different - it lets you have a portable laptop that can also be a gaming machine when it's on a desk at home.

This is already a desktop ! Just buy the right desktop for the job.

@Nom: Have you read Oculink why people use them?

I think you are here arguing about something that is not applicable for your use.

Oculink exists for a reason, there are use cases for it and they are not to replace desktop and their ease of access to PCIe on the motherboard.

TBH, I don't get it too as many external graphics enclosure can be as big as a small desktop anyway and messy with the tangled cable.

However, some Oculink docks come with built-in power supply.

You understood the use case of laptops vs desktops. You don't understand the use case of Oculink and you'll probably never will, and that is fine.

Thunderbolt 5 is supposedly going to fix the additional power supply issue but until we can see that implemented for external GPU docks, then Oculink is the best you can get as USB4 is too limiting for performance.

There are plenty discussions about Oculink in Ozbargain. Its a new tech, so you probably just can't fathom the use case of it yet.
