Man its getting confusing which mini PC to buy. Do i get this or the N100 brand new deals going for $180 ish?

    No bloody idea.

    • +2

N100 has way less power consumption

      • +2

Would not say it's way less. The i5 6400t cpu is designed for laptops so it does have a low tdp for the age of the CPU. Tests measure of 10w - 20w idle and max draw of 40w.

The Intel n100 idle draw is 4w-10w with max draw of 30w.

You may be able to under volt the i5 even more to get the idle power closer to the n100.

Most of the bios on the generic Intel n100 mini PC's are extremely limited and your have less flexibility to tweak it.

A saving of 5watts over 365 days at a tariff of 23cents/kWh is around $10

Also take note that these cheap mini PC's you get from AliExpress all comes with cheap power supplies. If you want stability and safety I would price in a new power supply that has passed Australian standards. That will set you back $30-$40.

I have a 6400T based laptop attached to my TV and it's starting to show it's age, struggles with 4K for example. The much more modern iGPU in the newer N100 desktops would blow this out of the water for media consumption but if you're using it for Home Assistant etc these are great

          • @Ezekiel2320: That's exactly what I wanted to know as I look for my first mini pc. Thanks.

I have a 8500t desktop running as HAOS and its currently running at 5.2 watts.

        • Wow desktop? That's amazing.

        • Similar, 9500T (Dell optiplex micro) running proxmox reading 3-5W, .6-.7 power factor

    • I tried both for.my Plex server and ended up with this. For some reason my n100 was overheating, could have been a unit issue.

These are lower in power consumption, probably low as low as the n100.

      Hasn't missed a beat

      • Check the thermal paste and heatsink on the Intel n100. The one I got was poorly installed with way too much crappy thermal paste.

After a repaste with thermal grizzly paste the idle temps dropped 20 degrees

what HDD setup do you use for media storage?

        • I have one NVMe + 1 internal SSD + External powered HDD

          • @abs898: thanks for reply - is the external a single unit like a WD desktop expansion, or a JBOD/DAS multi HDD caddy….i ask becasue i am looking at the latter option for my own use, cheers!

            • @QuickToThePointless: WD desktop expansion. All combined, it's about 8TB, I think, which is more than enough for me.

What speed is the RAM? It's a pretty good price for just 16GB RAM and 256GB SSD

Edit: The processor spec says DDR4 2133MHz is maximum. Poo

    • +1

DDR4 - 2400T and 2133 Mixed models in this lot

    • What do you need the faster ram for? Ddr4 has lower CAS than ddr5.

    • +1

this is a 6th gen of intel processor.
What speed did you expect? 6000?

Moreover, for tasks that cpu can do - it doesnt really matter on what ram speed would be.

    Hey OP

Where are you located and do you offer pick-up?

    • If it didn't com from the factory with wifi then it won't have either the internal nor external antennas.

You can get a kit of wifi card and both antennas from AliExpress for like $30 shipped.

Obviously can loaded with Linux/Home Assistant etc., but if you’re actually after a Windows machine it’s hard to recommend something limited to Windows 10 at this point.

From what I understand there are workarounds to get Windows 11 running on unsupported hardware, but there are performance impacts/drawbacks.

    • you can run activated win 11 LTSC using massgrave.dev and completely circumventing the tpm 2.0 requirement

    • -1

Windows 11 no problems. Never heard about any performance issues. Windows just needs a TPM 2.0 chip

I find the AIO listing a bit confusing. It says AIO only. I assume that means monitor + computer combined but no keyboard or mouse? And the first slide says DVD but I can’t see a drive slot anywhere? (I’d love to have the Bluray AIOs back but no one makes those)

  • Does this have any dust filters built in? I had the dell SFF before and it got really dusty after a few months.

    • I do not believe so, however the amount of air that goes through this is also a lot smaller.

      • Thanks, ordered one :)

    • I custom cut a piece of dust filter material that i inserted in the front of my dell optiplex 7050 micro

Got one of these last time. It's a dense little nugget, should be good as a remote backup server at the parent's house.

  • +1

N100 is Windows 11 certified. Anything older than Intel G8 (e.g. 6400T) is not.

    • +1

VentoyUSB will circumvent the MS Windows 11 certification. Just copy Windows 11 ISO to the USB and you're good to go.

      • is Ventoy better than Rufus?

        • Yes, Rufus install Ventoy for multiple isos supports.

  • Bought one for Batocera and Windows 11 dual boot. Thanks OP.

  • Anyone know if these can do 1440p @120hz through display port? Specs show 4k @60hz, would like to use one for steam link client along with server duties.

    • From what I have found, for 1440p @ 144Hz, you'll need at least DisplayPort 1.2.

DisplayPort 1.2 was first introduced in 2010 which was a very long time ago (in computing terms) so I am sure that the DisplayPort in this PC at least match that spec.

    • Keen to know how you'll setup steam link on a machine like this - is there an OS or app installed? Will you keep the machine on or only turn it on when about to play? Do you know if there's a remote or something that can turn on/off on demand?

      • +1

Native to the steam program on Windows.

You can probably set up wake on lan with an app on your phone to turn it on, I don't bother, the laptop I use currently idles at 5w and does server duties

Thanks! Give this a go for Ubuntu system over a Raspberry Pi. Its a bit cheaper.

    • Insane this is the timeline we're on.

      Actually upgradable unlike the Pi

      • Yeah, exactly and its still pretty small.

    • +1

I'm doing the same. Thanks OP.

  • +1

For old PCs, get at least 8th gen Intel. There was a big jump from 7th to 8th in terms of performance. This is 6th but okay for the price.

    • This is more about the$119 price and inclusions. An 8th gen will cost a tad more I would expect.

      • For equivalency i think its about the same.

I5 7500T is about equivalent to i3 8100T, Price for the dell optiplex systems should be about the same

  • picked one up to uses as a dedicated game server should work pretty well for me and my mates

  • +1

Do these have spare RAM slots? I would love 32GB of RAM, without wasting the sticks that are already installed.

    • They have two ram slots total, and i think it would be fairly safe to assume they are already full with 2x8gb chips. But it would support 32gb max at 2400mhz.

  • Cheers got one to set up a remote server over my parents place

  • Considering HA in the future. Would something like this be ideal or is there something better I should consider? Cheers

    • +1

More than sufficient…..one could run a couple of VMs on this eg Pi-Hole & HA…..and a 3rd of something small but, not sure until I test!

  • Could this run Windows XP or Windows 7? I want a SFF computer to play old games.

  • Seems to be out of stock again

    • working on that , thanks for the heads up

      • Yeah it's still down. I just tried it.

      • Got Ozbargained. Time to move off SiteGround.

  • +1

    The site is still unavailable

  • @hunterzz - How is getting the site going? I am keen to see what other machines you have. Very happy with this purchase and would like to support you rather than maybe another eBay listing.

    • Have you received yours or any shipping info yet?

      • +1

Yeah, I've got mine. Running Ubuntu in my network cabinet at the moment and running like a dream (for the last 24 hours). I want another maybe 2 or 3 of the same or similar.

I've found some on eBay which are a bit more expensive, but would rather support these guys. Shipping was good and nicely packed.

        • Nice. Did you receive any shipping info in advance as all quiet on the western front on my side?

          • +1

@Borg: Yes I did. Got an order complete notification and a AusPost tracking number.

            • +1

@geekcohen: Mmmm, I only got a order notification when placed. Thanks for confirming.

@hunterzz. Can you confirm if there is a delay on orders as I haven’t even received shipping notification yet and still eagerly awaiting?

              • +1

@Borg: I've received no dispatch notification and no order so far. Have fired off an email so fingers crossed.

                • @Dandaman21: Glad I am not alone and not great considering we ordered 6 days ago :-(

                  • @Borg: Just got a reply that shipping notices aren't going out due to the website outage and he gave me a tracking number etc :)

  • Same here tried email and ringing nothing

  • all good just got tracking number from austpost

    • Nice, lucky you. Perhaps your emails and calls forced them to sort your order?
Will now have to do the same as at a point where I might try cancel the order as I needed it for a project this weekend. At this point will end up having to use a different device making this one redundant.for me and a wasted purchase. I wasn't expecting such crap shipping delays and poor communications from them unfortunately.

  • Website is now back online. I got a resend of my tracking number.

    • Yeah, I just got a tracking number as well which was created yesterday. Doesn't mean a lot though until it changes to "we've got It" and is on the way.
Touch wood will be with AustPost today but even then unlikely I'll get by Fri which will be a bummer.. Regardless, glad we have some movement at last :-)

      • Mine was posted.Friday 2pm from sender > Sorted at 4pm Kemps Creek NSW > Transit to Melbourne over the weekend, processed Monday > Onboard for Delivery in Warragul on Tuesday.

Formatted with Ubuntu and in my networking cupboard running tests that night.

        • Show off :-)

      • +1

Updated to "we've got it", woo hoo, it's on the way.

        • Arrived an hour ago, excellent.
Mine came with a HP Branded: INTEL SSDPEKNW512G8H 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe 2280. Thought it was meant to only incl a 256GB (not complaining) and can only guess ran out of those.
Other: Unlike the online ad that noted "Unit comes without inbuilt WIFI and secondary HDD caddie" this one had the HDD Caddie & cable which is handy.

Thanks OP. Got there in the end :-)
