Lenovo has just sent us some exclusive offer for OzBargain from 3 latest ThinkPad range. Use coupon code OZBGLENXMAS at checkout to get 15% on ThinkPad T430u and ThinkPad Twist, and 20% off on ThinkPad X1 Carbon. They are also running 500GB USB2 Portable Hard Drive for $1 in the Accessories section so make sure you add that in your cart when you order a ThinkPad.

ThinkPad T430u Ultrabook — $939 -> $799

  • Intel Core i5-3317U
  • Windows 8 or 7 Home Premium
  • 4GB RAM, 24GB SSD cache + 500GB HDD
  • 14" LCd
  • 1.8kg

Note — hopefully T430u is built with T-series quality (which should be a lot better than EDGE series). Also if the i3-3217U config that's one grade lower might be a better buy for some. $765.15 after coupon + 500GB portable hard drive, and it has a slow GT 620M dedicated GPU, but only an i3, 2GB and 320GB HDD (which can be cheaply fixed from 3rd party components).

ThinkPad Twist Convertible — $1149 -> $977

  • Intel Core i5-3317U
  • Windows 8
  • 4GB RAM, 24GB SSD cache + 500GB HDD
  • 12.5" Touch Screen
  • 1.6kg

ThinkPad X1 Carbon — $1499 -> $1199

  • Intel Core i5-3317U
  • Windows 8 or 7 Home Premium
  • 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD
  • 14" 1600x900 LCD
  • 1.4kg

    $7665.15 after coupon + 500GB portable hard drive

    Doesn't seem like much of a bargain to me ;-)

    1.8kg 14" - the T430u must be right at the edge of what can be defined an ultrabook!

    • +1

      Dell XPS 14 is over 2kg and is classed as an ultrabook. Intels spec only defines the thickness of the ultrabook, not the weight.

      • +3

        When you hear the term ultrabook, you automatically think of slim, light laptops with long battery life aka Macbook Airs, which is what ultrabooks are meant to fight against.

        Faux ultrabooks, even if they're "in-spec", kinda spoil the name. Imagine if Apple named the latest Macbook Pro a Macbook Pro Air.

        edit: intel's marketing blurb is so misleading - "enjoy the slim, light look of an Ultrabook".

        So it can look light, but doesn't have to be light? tsk tsk.

    • Yes. The whole Ultrabook was originally termed to compete with Macbook Airs and the first generations are all slim sub-1.5kg 11/13 inchers.

      These days you get 2kg+ 14/15inch "ultrabooks" because it has non-replaceable battery and no optical drive.

  • Oh! Thanks Scotty!

    How is the Twist Convertible as a Tablet? anyone own it yet?

    • I don't have the Twist Convertible but have the X201 Tablet, which is pretty much the same design with the same weight.

      I never use it in tablet mode like a regular tablet as it is heaaaaavy. It's nearly 3x the weight of a thinkpad tablet 2!

      It might be ok if it's resting on your lap, or on a desk for showing things to people. But as a handheld tablet on a sofa for example, I really wouldn't recommend it.

      • thanks!

    • The Twist is okay as a tablet, if you are into Windows 8 and touch tablet with no use for wacom pen.

  • Anyone who got T430? Are you aware there is high-pitching fan noise?

    • +2

      The high pitch fan noise is not an issue with the T430u and T430s (thank god!!!).

      Here is my review of this: http://www.thinkscopes.com/thinkpad-t430u-overview/

      Also, i have some photo of the T430u against T430s/X1/X1C if you are interested.

      =============

      A word of caution on T430u, the current BIOS firmware does not allow aftermarket RAM upgrade, but the next update will (i have tested the beta bios firmware to confirm this).

        Thanks that was a great review.

        IMHO T430u would sit above other similar priced ultrabook because of build quality and serviceability. However I wish they can put their T430/S430 HD+ screen on it. T430S is dealer and I don't need the optical drive. S430 (which I actually ordered one for my wife with this deal) is probably not "ThinkPad-enough" for myself…

      • Thanks, my recommendation is don't buy Thinkpad T430 if you are sensitive to noises.

  • ThinkPad T430u Ultrabook
    3 cell Li-polymer Battery 47 Whr

    Can this last for 3 hours continuous usage?

    • +1

      if you have SSD and on battery saver mode 5 to 6 hours is more typical.

  • Is it easy to put in a second hard drive in this model?

    • If you mean a replacement, sure. No room for a second 2.5" drive though

  • Last time Lenovo cancelled my order of X1 Carbon without any notification, reason is $1060 is too low for it. I ended up to pay $1400 which I was told a special deal only cost price! Now you are trying to sell $1200 for the same thing?

    Try to sell higher when have many demands even order taken? You are losing customer with the sell strategy, not because of quality or after sale service.

  • No discount on 256ssd upgrade like the cyber Monday sale. Bugger

  • has Lenovo outsourced all local support to North Carolina?

    and has support levels dropped to worse than HP Pavillions and the like?
