Coles Simply Cheddar Cheese Block 1kg $8.70 @ Coles

640

Was $9.90 in June, then dropped to $9 in July when the Tasty went down to $9.50 from $13.90. Now a further $0.30 drop to $8.70.

Coles Simply Cheddar Cheese Block 1kg.
Mild and smooth
Strength indicator: 2
Made in Australia

Hillview Cheese Block 1kg from Woolworths $8.70 has also dropped from $9 to $8.70, for those who don't have Coles near them. I prefer the Coles version over the Woolworths Hillview option. The ALDI version is now $8.49, from $8.69, and also a good option. $8.69 deal.

Personally I was buying Tasty Cheddar for $9.50 over this Milder Cheddar at $9, now $8.70. However if you prefer milder cheese or it's not worth the $0.80 extra, then this option is for you.

    WOW !!!

    Save 30 cents !!!

    • What is the normal price?

    • +2

You've been listening to too much of Brian Taylor's commentary. Wowee

    • +1

If it were Aldi it would be the normal price.

    • 120k comments, wow. Slow down a bit!

What do people think of the Coles Tasty Cheddar in comparison to Aldi and Woolworths? I haven't tried Coles version but the others are not particularly tangy. That said I would put WW above Aldi… hillview is like a soft rubber, once opened it takes a month+ in the fridge to ripen up.

Coles Tasty ($9.50) above all. Not worth saving 80 cents to have a kilo of disappointment.

      • +9

Life is too short to suffer inferior cheese.

        Agree, good value!

    • +5

      Coles Tasty, hands down

      • +6

Coles Tasty best value cheese right now compared to all the other generic supermarket brands

        • +1

          In certain it’s rebranded Bega

          • @stickyfingers: yes, it does taste like Bega

          • +3

@stickyfingers: It's better than Bega by a decent margin imo.

Bega supplied Coles until about the middle of last decade. Then Coles contracted Devondale MG. Last few years (probably not coincidentally about the time when their Tasty improved) their cheese has been supplied by Saputo in Cobram (Vic).

Coles Tasty (quite tasty) >>>> Aldi Westacre (mildly recognisable taste of cheese > Ww Hillview (horrible texture and no cheese taste whatsoever)

Coles Simply is marginally better than Hillview.

  • +2

    Is it 24% chicken though?
Tried the simply sausages… Just don't.

    • +5

Yeah Coles Simply takes me back to the old days of Franklins no frills or Black and Gold…..shudder. Some really average products in the Coles Simply range. However, if money is tight then you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do to feed your family.

      • The coles simply spiral pasta is gross. Once cooked it becomes a gluggy mess

        • +3

          Just cook it al dente?

    • The Coles Simply garlic bread is as good, if not better than the more expensive ones. La Famiglia is just rubbish. For $2, you can't go wrong really.

    Colby one is the best

Our choice for the 1kg block of sh1te cheese is Aldi's.

Good for cooking, kids and guests you don't really like though.

    • Yes

  • +1

That is the standard price for IGA 1kg block too.

  • +2

I had the premium 9.50 tasty block x2 after the last post and I did enjoy it. I never really paid much attention before. Then I bought a Colby to try it and mate its so plain and almost like eating flavourless soylent green or something, like a Nutroblock Dairy 3000. Almost tastes like unsalted butter.

    I'm a tasty cheese man 🧀

  • +4

Aldi ftw. They didn't price gouge on the cheese like Coles and Woolworths did during the last couple of years. Now that people have cottoned on, they miraculously are reducing their prices.

  • +4

they probably make everything else more expensive and their own brands cheaper

    • +1

      Exactly

While bending over the producers who make these products for them

  • You all know this emulsified super processed stuff is not really cheese, right?

    • …beg pardon… !

    • Love me some cheese product. What's wrong with emulsification? Mayonnaise seems pretty popular

    • What do you eat instead? First I’ve heard of these cheeses being processed in a bad way

      • +2

I picked up "Swiss Cheese: in ALDI the other day, They forgot to punch the holes into the slices ;-)

Seriously though, there's plenty of information available about the nature, tastyness and dangers of super & ultra processed foods about.

        https://webstories.theguardian.com/stories/2023/sep/8/ultra-…

But, whatever excites your taste buds.

        • I clicked but they said nothing about cheese.

    • What do you mean? Genuinely interested, haven’t heard of this as yet.

After backpacking in Italy, I came back thinking this yellow block cheese is not real cheese. But we still buy it all the time.

    • No, but say more?.. I'm intrigued

  • I coincidentally bought this myself for the first time yesterday and used it last night on a pizza.

It was okay, but just okay, not enough taste for my preference.

    • Did it release a lot of oil/get greasy? I always worry about that when using tasty cheese

      • I'd say it didn't come across as oily or greasy at all.

    • +3

      Buy the grated pizza cheese
3 cheeses inside , great stuff

      • 100%. That 3 cheese combo one is far superior to this cheddar block cheese.

      • +1

Plus a load of preservatives and the amounts used are largely unregulated… All pre-grated stuff is crap, sorry.

        • +1

          Preservatives help you live longer

          • +1

@jv: I’d have thought they just make your body take longer to decompose

        • Agree. They add that stuff which is like cardboard to stop the cheese pieces from sticking together.

          • +1

@Corgsta: Sometimes I wish they didn't include the starchy non-stick coating so I could just wrestle with my big mass of cheese shreds and have it melt properly. Grass is always greener 😮‍💨

    • +2

get the tasty in the green packaging instead

    • +1

I thought normally on pizza you put a fairly “tasteless” cheese anyway - mozzarella. Or fior di latte, etc. Creamy but not tasty like parmesan.

      • I've found that the mozzarella here in the little plastic containers is too watery for normal home-oven pizzas, just makes the bases all soggy.

  • It was still $9 at my local store

  • ay least it's Australian made with Australian ingredients, processed dairy products are now is making itheir way across the ditch.

  • +2

    I’d rather buy Beqa

    • +1

My mother in law knows someone who worked at the Bega factory. They said they supply Aldi (and probably the other supermarkets). But it was a particular Aldi product.

    • Me to. Aussie owned and Aussie made and tastes great.

  • +2

I just finished cutting 1/2 block of the Aldi Westacre Tasty Cheese block @ $8.49 - Not bad…

Also, what does everyone else use to cut their cheese…

I've tried a few solutions, but am liking this atm.

    • What is the maximum thickness you can slice with that? Kids like sliced cheese for some reason, so I am forced to pay for the sliced version.

    • +2

      A $1 steak knife I’ve had for 20+ years…

      • +1

yes, I use steak knives as well, the ones with lots of fine serrations and a thinner blade….works wonders for cutting cheese cleanly. I also use for tomatoes, onions etc as well

      • +2

I grew up slicing it that way and agreed until I found these things with a wire and two different sizes. Same result and easier

        • Thanks just ordered to try it :)

        • I will try as well.

        • +1

For $9, I would rather have another 1kg block of cheese and 30 cents leftover instead!

    • +1

Chef'n Slicester Cheese Slicer (Apricot) https://amzn.asia/d/3fkfYNF

This works pretty good, take a bit if getting used to and wouldn't mind if it went a bit thinner but it's pretty good

      • +1

I have one of these, similar concept - https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0794QLJJX

But found that the last 1cm could get 'stuck' or dig deeper into the block, making it hard to remove the slice.

But that solution, where you apply pressure from the top, could be a winner…

  • +2

Can you take this on the plane?

  • +2

Havent bought tasty for years , they took all the flavour out

Always buy vintage, for the bit extra money its not worth eating bad cheese

    • +2

Try the current Coles Tasty 1kg block, you may be pleasantly surprised. Has been very good for a couple of years now (well that's when we took the gamble and paid the premium). Little difference between Coles Tasty and Aldi Vintage taste and texture wise.
