  • which one is better?

    • +8

Personally, Coles is much better. Woolies one doesn't taste like much.

      • +1

Agreed. Coles is the best out of all including Aldi. It actually has a bit of a kick to the cheddar. Unless they changed it.

        Woolies melts better.

        • I miss the Cowbelle Tasty blocks from Aldi. It had a nice texture and taste and lasted ages after opening. Then one day they stopped selling it.

    • +5

YMMV. but I have found the Hillview to be bland AF

    • +2

Personally not a fan of Hillview.

    • +2

Like the Coles ones and don't like the Hillview at all.

    • Aldis which has been $9.49 everyday for a while now.

Can't comment on the Coles, but of these two the Woolies Tasty Seemed to vary between batches though. Sometimes was ok, sometimes didn't seem far off the Hillview. Aldis is pretty consistent at least.

Haven't bought for a long time now so don't know if any different.

      • +4

I thought ALDI's tasty cheese was really meh last year, similar experience to how others describe Ww's Hillview now. But I tried ALDI's again a couple of months ago and found it was pretty tasty this time around.

        • +1

Yeh agree, it was pretty average (back when Woolies Tasty was still $10 at least) Don't know if they changed supplier or what but its definitely much better now.

          • @bamzero: It used to be Bega but has changed to Cheer.
You can confirm with the nutritional information.

        • I haven't tried it since it became very bland. Good to know it has improved.

    • none of them,I would only use them as a wheel chock.

    • Hillview tastes like milk if that's your thing, not like cheese

      • -2

Wow, a cheese that tastes like milk! Who would have thought?

    • called it

  • +1

Which cheddar of those 3 is the least crumbly when using a slicer?

    • +2

Probably the Hillview. It's also the least cheese tasting though.

      • It is the least cheese.

  • Oh man I just bought a coles block for $14, I got done!

    • My local has cheese promo everywhere. Yours didn’t?

      • Said purchase of cheese was last Friday, didn't see anything.

        • Then surely it is mostly gone by now?

          • @cakesyy: 1kg of cheese probably lasts us a month, there's only 2 of us.

    • -1

Me too. Paid $14.50 last Sunday.

Wow thank you Woolworths and Coles for easing the cost of living pressures! We are in your debt for reducing a "household staple" cheese block and taking a hit on your millions of quarterly profits! What a selfless act! Now everyone can eat properly!

    • they just put the prices up on other items, you only save if you buy whats on "special" and hope the price has really gone down

  • +2

Why cant they drop price of shredded cheese?

    • +1

Shredded cheese has preservatives and I've heard the amount added isn't really regulated.

I find that freshly shredded cheese from a block tastes much better anyway.

      • +6

Toss the cheese in a little arrowroot starch to stop it sticking together after grating, it won’t affect the texture or melting as much as cornstarch

        • +1

When you say "a little", roughly how much are we talking? I haven't heard of using arrowroot starch for cheese before

          • +2

@Grannular: About 1/2-1 tsp per cup of cheese

It’s been a long day, I should have put have put it in my original comment aha

        • +1

and then can we freeze it?

          • +3

            @pyramid: Sure can

The reason grated cheese goes mouldy faster is the anti-caking agents and starches added to prevent sticking. The same will happen with this, so definitely freeze to extend shelf life or just grate what you need from the block as you go

        • whabout potato starch

Found the darker coloured label one is better, would that be coles maybe?, hillview is rubbery, and does not taste good.
IGA cheaper one is not too bad, $9.90/kg I believe.

  • feeding the family for under $10

    • +1

      1/4kg block of cheese each?

  • Soooo, back to the price it was a year ago before they started to raise prices just because.

    • 100% Boycotting is the only way to stop unreasonable prices, if you pay, they just go harder.
      Consumers are the problem.

  • Whats the easiest way to slice these blocks?

    • easiest way is to buy it sliced

      • But its not discounted :(

        • this is a pretty rubbery cheese, doesn't crumble in my experience.

those wire slicers would work well for this block

    • With a shoe.

    • +1

I use a serrated bread knife, originally because all the other knives in the set need a good sharpen but it does a really good job.

I've cut slices so thin, I couldn't even see them

    • +1

We’ve used cheese slicers like this all my life, and they’ve been perfect.

(Not this expensive of course, but just so you know the type)

  • Which is a good pizza cheese?

    • +1

      Buffalo mozzarella

Is this good to use when taking photos?

  • +1

I can never finish the 1kg block and goes mouldy. Does anyone have a good method of preserving it longer?

    • +3

      Freeze it.

    • +4

I keep a bunch of pre-cut slices in a container, and vac-seal the rest in its own bag until I need to cut the next lot.

    • +2

In addition to the comment about freezing it, don't touch it with your bare hands. I usually use gloves and a clean knife.

    • +1

Keep it wrapped in the original plastic. Put it in a zip loc bag.

  • +2

We've been getting ripped so hard for so long on cheese blocks, finally…

    • +1

They seem to have a habit of selling at a "new everyday low price" then you go back a couple of weeks later and they've jacked it again.

  • I found Woolies to be pretty bad— especially how the oils separate from the cheese when melted/microwaved. Coles is better.

  • That Hillview cheese tastes like garbage… i took it back and got a refund…. I imagine it tastes a lot like dick cheese…

  • hillview "made in nz" from china ?

  • Expired. Back to $13.90/$9.90.
