Went to get some cheese and they had it further reduced from the previous $9.49. Hope this helps with people's budgets

You were quicker then me by 5mins.. just went to post this deal haha

My post template below 👇

Following the recent news regarding both Coles & Woolworths dropping the 1kg cheese box down to $9.49 I went into my local ALDI at Springfield Lakes, QLD to see them now priced at $8.69!

Could this be the beginning of the price wars between the other competitors? I still prefer ALDI for its competitive pricing then the other major outlets.

I can never get through these 1kg blocks without them starting to go bad.

    • +3

you could probably freeze them, like use a ziploc bad and submerge in hot water to get the air out, then seal.

      • The trick to restore dried out blocks of cheese is to soak them in milk. Saw it on some random lifehack and it mostly works; just gotta get the soak time right.

    • +10

a plastic lunchbox container will solve that - we had the same problem - now we keep it in one of those plastic containers that seal pretty tight and in the fridge - just find one thats about the same size as the cheese block so its a reasonably snug fit

      • +1

100%. Lots of options, but this works well.

    • +16

Cheese doesn't go bad, it "matures".

    • +1

You should come to our house.

    • +1

Buy yourself a packet of foldback clips, fold over the plastic on your food products and clip them sealed.

    • +1

ziplock bags are good for this too

    • +5

I find if you cut them into smaller blocks they stay OK for longer. I make sure I don't touch the cheese with my hands when cutting them into smaller blocks to avoid putting bacteria in the cheese. I wrap them in baking paper to minimise sweating. Then each smaller block I handle as usual, and generally they get used before going moldy.

It's people touching the cheese over and over that contaminates it and makes it go moldy quickly.

      • "It's people touching the cheese over and over that contaminates it and makes it go moldy quickly."

This must be why my acne gets worse after I keep touching it

      • +1

It's also people using the knife for things like bread/butter as well as cheese inviting cross contamination. Drives me insane when people do this lol, same with Vegemite flecks in the butter.

    • I disagree

    • can easily go through these on my own, no chance it sees 3 weeks

    • -1

Store in an airtight container…the good old "tuppaware" sealed container

    • Use an air tight container, make sure no moisure.

  • +12

Homer, have you been up all night eating cheese?

      I think I'm blind

Woolworths have reduced thier very nice HillView 1kg Cheddar block from $9.90 to $9.00
      https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/500187?goo…

Its a much better cheese than this Aldi one.
Personally Im not a fan of this Aldi cheese.

Id rather pay the extra 30c and get a decent cheese just around the corner from where I live

      • The 1kg homebrand blocks from all the supermarkets are pretty mild, but I feel Hillview is the blandest of them.

  • -1

Coles has there’s down to 9.50 from memory

    • +1

yes but like usual the quality of colesworth items are significantly inferior - you can easily taste the difference

but if you ever doubt it just compare the nutritional information, from mince meat, cheese to even milk, they are cutting corners - yes as ridiculous as that sounds, check the labels and you'll see it

      • +1

The coles Tasty band cheese is my fav of all the generics by far.

Woolworths HillView 1kg Cheddar block down to $9.00
      https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/500187?goo…

Much better cheese than the Aldi one in my opinion and also better than Cloes

      • -1

        nah, it's terrible

        flavourless in comparison

also the nutritional profile is far superior with aldi because it's not mostly milk

        • +1

In fact the carbs, energy and protein profiles of Hillview and Westacre Tasty are very similar.

The most significant differences are in salt content - Aldi Westacre has 4% more; calcium - Hillview has 11% more; and fat - Hillview has 1.7% Trans fats, Westacre doesn't mention Trans fats at all. Nutritionally Hillview would therefore be considered by most to be superior, health-wise it's line ball (salt V Trans fat, choose your poison). In a balanced diet none of the numbers is particularly significant so obviously consumers should choose based on price and personal taste.

Dyaf, pay the extra 81c and get the Coles Tasty.

    • +1

      Coles much better?

      • +5

As long as you get the good Coles cheese ($9.50) not the $9 variant

        • I didn't know Coles homebrand cheese blocks is over two subbrands

I heard Devondale supplies the superior Coles homebrand.

Is Coles Simply any good for plastic cheese slices?

      • +4

Coles Tasty ($9.50), not Coles Simply. Westacre barely has any flavour. If you want REAL taste you need to look at the more expensive vintage varieties. Usually about $14/kg

Ww Hillview, Aldi Westacre and Coles Simply are fine for grating on food, toasties etc

    • +1

the woolies one is better imo

      • because it is made by Cheer cheese. However, I still prefer Coles' tasty cheese which is supplied by Bega.

    • +1

I agree. The Aldi one was good many years ago, but that changed and is smooth, not crumbly and very mild taste….almost tasteless….well, it was last time I purchased….about 4-5 years ago.

      • Just had some. Still the same.

      • Right after the company decided to import Cheese from NZ & USA rather than source them locally.

        • +1

NZ has some of the best milk products, USA not so much, probs skimming on the milk part

      • there was a batch a while back where the aldi cheese tasted like coles cheese, too much milk, very little flavour

fortunately that seems like it was corrected quickly

generally it's much drier and has that intense flavour, compared to colesworth it is in a different league, up there with brand names, as usual with aldi offerings

        • ok, thanks. I get the Coles Tasty and that was always a good cheese, although not quite as good as it used to be (I never buy the Coles cheddar or Colby etc) The Aldi Tasty (I can't remember if it was Westacre or the other one….dairybell or something like that….it's been years, but before that it had always been good) at that time was very mediocre…I had bought it just before Christmas and had to serve that when everyone was over….I was embarrassed I had to serve it, but I didn't have anything else. It was so smooth and waxy and the taste was not great….so I hadn't bothered buying it since. If you say it is now good again then I will try it again, although most of the time I get the Coles Tasty is when I do the spend X$ x 4 weeks for 10,000 points.

    • lol no, coles is rubbish

  • Everyone wants more than just cheese

    • That's a cheesy comment.

  • For tasty, pretty all seem pretty much the same with home brand.

If wanted something with more flavour, just wait for coon/cheers mature tasty to go on sale.

    • last time I bought some Cheers I was sorely disappointed with the taste. Won't be buying it again and will stick with the Coles Tasty

  • Obviously in response to Coles price drop.

Coles will reduce the price of the popular household staple by $4.40 from $13.90 to $9.50.
The 12 week deal kicking off from Wednesday is fully funded by Coles to ensure dairy farmers are not out of pocket.

    • Coles deal started last week.

    • -2

      aldi has always been cheaper

      and better quality

      evidently you've never tried

      • -4

Never come across and Aldi shill before. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15571406/redir

Tastes can differ widely - as your taste in American politicians shows - but if you think Westacre's Tasty is good cheese then you're in for a treat when you taste cheddar which actually has half-decent flavour.

        • best not to broadcast your stupidity so effectively

stay on point and people might take you more seriously

Which part(s) of my comment did you find "stupid"?

Are things that grim out there in the real world that $0.80 off tasty cheese is a bargain?

    • +3

This is Ozbargain after all. Every cent counts

  • +4

This appears to be a Gouda deal..

    • I wish Aldi will return their Gouda for $3.50.

  • +1

Really shit cheese but at this price worth a crack for toasties and cooking etc

  • +3

    Any deals on WestHectare?

  • +6

Aldi cheese is supplied by Cheer as per the nutritional information. Used to be supplied by Bega as it matched the farmers tasty nutritional information.

Does this signify the end of inflation, a price cut on cheese?

  • +1

I slice my block ino thin pieces, so I can just separate them when I need it, and I freeze them as sliced pieces in a lunch box so they're ready when I need them for my toasty

    • I've cut slices so thin, I couldn't even see them!

      • ..so how did you know you had cut them?

        • (puzzled look) Well I guess I just assumed….

  • +3

As much as I am a proud Ozbargainer and happy to save a couple of dollars, this cheese price war is scary. I used to work in the dairy industry, and it takes 10 litres of milk to make a kilo of cheese. This is roughly equivalent of 85c per litre.

Most dairy farmers need to be paid around 60-80c/litre just to break even, and this has probably gone up even more with inflation. We all know the supermarkets won't make a loss, so guess who gets squeezed - the farmer.

    • Supermarkets make decisions for individual products to be loss leaders all the time. The amount that farmers get paid for milk solids is dictated by global dairy prices and local processing costs. That's always been the case since the deregulation of the industry - even the much famed "supermarket milk wars" had no influence on the prices that farmers were paid.

      • +1

Not exactly. I agree that there is no 'immediate' correlation between the prices supermarkets sell milk products at and the pricing paid to farmers. The pricing paid to farmers is based on a complex formula. However, when you have a price war, the processor (e.g. Bega) ends up subsidising some of the supermarket's promotional losses. The processor will look to recover these costs from the farmers in the next round of milk fat / solids price negotiation.

The global price is only relevant to processors such as Fonterra who have access to international markets they can offload excess inventory of WMP and SMP to. Most other processors cannot change their contracted price to Woolies and Coles easily even if global prices rise or fall. During the supermarket milk wars of the 2000's, the long term effect was to reduce the real prices paid to farmers (net of input costs). This is what led to numerous parliamentary enquiries, and today's price model to farmers is much fairer, but not immune to the long term effects of a price war.

    • +2

I highly doubt the farmer was ever getting any more when the prices skyrocketed from $6 a block 2 years ago to about $10. Im thankfull that dairy is finally dropping again. Now potatoe products need to drop. I dont understand the justification behind the cost of chips and frozen chips once the potatoe shortage occured about 1.5-2 years ago. They all just kept going up for no real reason. They couldnt blame freight and fuel costs and fuel has dropped quite a lot since those times. Just profiteering.

    Unfortunately not NZ cheese

  • What do you call a cheese that isn't yours? Nacho cheese!
