The only accurate breathalyzers are fuel cell based and need regular calibration to remain accurate. I have tried several MEMS based units, one costing over $200, and they have been disappointing. Doing something like brushing your teeth or using chewing gum is enough to give a 0.3 BAC reading (no alcohol in the toothpaste or gum).

    This unit looks pretty good.

    • How many uses / what amount of time do you need before recalibration?

Even if you spend $5000 on a breathalyzer, it means nothing.

No device is 100%, and all it takes is the police officers device to read you over the limit, even if its wrong, and you'll be taken for a more accurate test.

So you really need to hope the device is accurate, personally I think its more accurate to just limit your drinks where there is no risk of being over the limit.

    • Alternatively, for the cost of an expensive device you can pay for a number of taxi trips.

      • For 3 weeks. Then what?

  • Whilst this seems like a good deal, wouldn't it be more prudent to not drink to the brink of .05 then drive?

Or don't drink at all if driving.

This is (to me) even more prudent when at stake is your driving / criminal record + insurance.

Saying to the Constable / Magistrate that the Alcolizer Easy Check Breathalyzer that you scored on Ozbargain for 1/3 off indicated you were under the limit holds no value.
