[NSW] Free Train and Metro on Travel Sydney Trains, Airport Link, Sydney Metro and NSW TrainLink on 21/9 & 22/9 @ NSW Transport

1631

Travel will be free on all train and metro services operated by Sydney Trains, Airport Link, Sydney Metro and NSW TrainLink booked services this weekend

From 11pm Friday 20 September to 1am Monday 23 September 2024:

Travel will be free on all train and metro services in NSW.
You will not be required to tap on or tap off for any train or metro service.
Opal gates and readers will be turned off at stations during the fare free period.

The fare free weekend includes Airport Link and gates at Airport Line stations (Domestic and International).

The NSW Minister for Transport, Jo Haylen, just announced free rail travel this weekend (21-22 September) on the Opal Network in NSW. The only place this seems to have been published is on ol’ mate’s LinkedIn. That’s official enough for me.

Airport fees will still apply, as always.

We know rail travel could be a challenge as a result of industrial action.

So this weekend, we’re making all rail travel free.

  • F.. I'm in Melbourne this weekend..

    • See Tulip flowers in Melbourne (paid) or Bendigo (free). Great photos for both location if you know where to take photos.

      https://tulipfestival.com.au/

      • oh wow! didn't know Bendigo has tulip festival too! Thank you for the insight!

        • Not tulip festival in Bendigo. But there is a park with Tulip flowers there. At least it's free access.

In Melbourne Tulip festival, it's a paid event.

  • +1

But trains would be on maintenance again this weekend.

    • Of course

  • +1

    I wish this includes XPT

  • I cant read the SMH article but does it specify that an Opal card is required? The Guardian article quotes Jo Haylen saying "We’re going to open the gates and deliver free travel for passengers this weekend so tens of thousands of families across our city can get to the footy."

    • -1

Until she clarifies it, treat it as figurative speech. Besides it shouldn't matter since you can tap on using your phone/card anyways, or jump the fence like what half the teens do.

      • -2

Lol jump the fence really!? You have statistics that half the teens do that or was it being sarcastic!? Pretty sure the gate beeps at you although no guards at gates to monitor what a shame. Maybe the drivers can become guards at gates

    • +1

free travel for passengers this weekend so tens of thousands of families across our city can get to the footy

Queensland does this by default. free travel to/from events like footy, cricket, concerts, etc.

it's great living in the backwards state.

      • +1

        Queensland does this by default

So does Sydney. Most major events have included include transport in the ticket for years, this seems to be some sort of poorly thought-out, poorly executed publicity stunt.

        • so just another rehashable announceable.

  • +1

They'll never do it on a weekday. And lately every day there's issues and delays.

  • +1

Always funny when they offer something like this when everyone knows so many people have hit their cap so travel is free anyway.

Also there usually a massive amount of trackwork and rail replacements on weekends so it's the most empty of gestures they can make.

  • -3

Urban rail should be free EVERY day.

And bike helmet and anti-escooter laws should be repealed.

and escooters should be treated like first class citizens instead of 3rd class citizens, meaning separated, raised, SAFE traffic lanes constructed for them on every road.

Easy to do, just remove all on-street car parking and use that space to build new, protected bike and scooter lanes.

Build it and they will come.

This is the future of urban transport. It’s time for politicians to get some vision!

    • +1

Urban rail should be free EVERY day.

Someone else should pay for things that I want!

      • -3

Well driving on roads is free - mostly (apart from a few toll roads).
Yet the Government built them. Even if you support the privatisation of roads - it won't happen.
Therefore I see no difference between free roads for cars and free rail trips for commuters.
Except that rail is more efficient.
        That's the only difference, right?

        • +1

Well driving on roads is free

Right, so the logic is if something is free, everything should be free?

The logic fail here is that roads are not free, they cost money to build and maintain, and someone somewhere pays for it. So the premise is false.

          Even if you support…

          Strawman

          That's the only difference, right?

Hard to tell if you are joking or not. There are quite a few differences the most obvious one of course is cost, and that money still has to come from somewhere.

This is the problem with socialism, eventually you run out of spending other people's money…

    • You don't think cyclists should have to wear helmets? That's a wild take tbh

      • -2

        That's a wild take tbh

Only wild if you've grown up in a zoo and have no idea of what even a tiny bit of personal freedom is…

        • +1

Personally I'd like to not hit my head and score an EVD. Some may disagree

          • @Save Medicare:

Personally I'd like to not hit my head

And you have that choice without forcing other people to subscribe to your beliefs.

Out of interest do you wear a helmet while driving or walking?

      • -2

Research clearly shows that mandatory cycle helmet laws massively reduce the usage of bicycles in a society.
Every other country on Earth seems to do just fine without redundant and paternalistic bicycle helmet laws.
Why would Australia be uniquely different? Does everyone else in the world have skulls made of steel, while our skulls in Australia are made of egg shells?
        No. It makes no sense.

        • I think it's less concern about the hard bony bit but more concern about the squishy stuff inside. When my taxes are paying for peoples' healthcare I prefer my riders mildly concussed over being comatose and intubated

          • -3

@Save Medicare: Again - research clearly shows that bicycle helmet laws have a net-negative effect on public health, as the extremely rare and slight elevation in the risk of injury from not wearing a piece of foam on your head DOES NOT outweigh the extremely large and pervasive negative health outcomes from the sedentary lifestyle that bike helmet laws incentivise.

I mean, I don't know what planet you're on. Is there a massive epidemic of "comatose and intubated" bicycle riders in literally every single other country on earth?

If you really cared about public health - you'd support the construction of segregated, protected bicycle lanes on every road. The real danger to cyclists doesn't come from not wearing a silly piece of foam on their heads - it comes from being forced to share the road with lethal cars and busses and trucks.

EDIT: link with research if you'd care to learn https://www.cycle-helmets.com/

          • @Save Medicare:

When my taxes are paying for peoples' healthcare

And now you just learned why people who like freedom do not like socialism. Once you force people to pay into a mandatory government scheme, the government then has a mandate to get more involved in telling you how to live your life.

  • o yes I remember CityFail ….. I mean Rail…. cough.

  • Oh Sh|t, my line this weekend having trackwork??? No way i m taking those slow free rail buses instead …

  • -6

We know rail travel could be a challenge as a result of industrial action.

So they probably won't even run…

  • Where is our 50 cents travel?

  • ferry included?

    • -1

Only train. You don't like to read news, do you?

    • +1

Bus, ferry, light rails are excluded.

  • +2

Just fyai, this freebie is because the planned industrial action and will have significant reduction on timetable so be aware of the pack and hassle
For me not totally worth it

  • +2

All public transports should be free or at least 50 cents for the sake of data (number of people, transport efficiency and improvement, etc.).

So, less cars and motorcycles on the roads, less accidents on the roads, and faster delivery. Fuel is not cheap anyway. Better air quality too.

    • yep i agree more for subsidising transport than giving $ for families with 5 kids i mean hello check your wallet before xxx ?

  • +3

bring back sunday all day travel $2.50~$2.80 NOW

  • when my line is on trackwork…..

    • Go somewhere more fun or calming with friends or family. Free like Japanese Garden in Gosford maybe ;-) Check Google Maps

  • +1

    I don't think that's good news.
It's already causing traffic problems today.

For regular commuters, it's already reached 50 AUD per week, so it's essentially free.
What I value more is reliable service schedules.

    NSW trains suck.

  • so any definitive answer on using your bank card?

  • All gates open so no need opal card?

    • If the gates are open, that may mean the gates have been switched off. People cannot tap on anyway if the gates are off.

  • +1

according to the latest @transportfornsw post:

…if you're using NSW TrainLink services you'll be refunded the price of your booked ticket.

so those travelling outside of the opal network are in luck after all!

the post also notes that train and metro travel is free from 11pm tonight until 1am on monday 23rd. this does not seem to include trainlink or coaches (pictured in the post), where i assume the free trips begin tomorrow.

you also don't need to tap on/off for sydney trains or metro.

  • MOD??? HOW DARE YOU REMOVED MY COMMENT!!! IT TAKES TIME TO PUT USEFUL COMMENT LIKE MINE. WHO IS THE MOD??? I AM NOT AFFILIATED, LOL. WE ARE IN AUSTRALIA, NOT NORTH KOREA. WE HAVE FREEDOM OF SPEECH. THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS THAT PUT PEOPLE OFF/AWAY FROM POSTING BARGAINS. MOST OF MY COMMENTS ARE USEFUL AND RELATED, NOT AFFILIATED.

Some events in Sydney that may interest you all this Saturday with this free train:

Okay, thanks. This could happen to anyone and may discourage people to make comments or post bargains. So many silent people in this forum actually.

The links were from googling or Facebook events. So, it could happen to anyone.

  • I use commuter car park, just take train to city, wondering if I do not tap at all today, will I get charge for parking?

    • If you use one of our Park&Ride commuter car parks, you’ll still be able to access free parking if you are travelling on the Opal network. Park&Ride car park boom gates will remain open during the fare free weekend for train and metro services.

      • Thanks. I did see the boom gates in both entry and exit were open when I exited the car park.

  • +1

Victoria cross metro gates open without tapping on/off

  • +2
