    not really that attractive

Don't put yourself down like that.

AI in all the phones just feels like a beta stage. I'll jump ship if I can finally integrate it to my smart home.

I get that Android has more customisation and faster parts, but as I grew older I realised I just wanted a phone that's easily adjustable to the UI.
Works well enough that my elderly mother can use it.

I also came from Android after being on Apple from the start and then switching back because I grew older and need only need messenger, nice photos, music, texting and calling.

          Agree 100%.

How many of us really need all those flashy wizz bang features, run high end games on the bus commute, need to watch videos in 4K right here right now etc …

Go into a retail store and that's what they'll try and upsell you to … sigh …

To be fair the AI features would be useful if you write a lot of emails for work. You can just use caveman speak and it’ll translate it to something coherent

    • +27

Except a lot of it is just silly. Their example was someone writing an email letting their boss know they are going to need to leave early on Friday and the person typed up something like 'yo boss, sorry to do this to ya, but I booked a camping site for Fri and so need to leave early to make it.'

Apple 'intelligence' then turned that casual note he typed up into professional writing, but why would he type it up as 'yo boss' in the first place. A lot of the use cases for the 'intelligence' are stupid. I also trust myself to write better than 'AI' so have no interest in it. I know Apple Intelligence is just a customised solution running on Google's Gemini AI engine, but still, AI has a long way to go before I'll trust it

      • +3

Because it means you don’t have to think about grammar, at all. I do this all the time except I copy paste from chatGPT. Apple intelligence is just an additional convenience factor.

        • +4

Grammar is unconscious, you speak all day long, so it is not exactly an issue to jot a quick note.

          • @sheikyerbouti: Different if you have to switch between casual and professional, grammarly helps me with that. Some emails you want to be casual and not a pretentious fwit, other emails you might need to be professional so helps tidying them up.

            • +1

@Jazza2400: I think all communication benefits from clarity of expression and an appropriate degree of courtesy.

My grammar stays largely the same whether I’m writing a request to my boss or arranging an event with friends.

Unclear writing simply makes it more difficult for the recipient to discern your intent, whereas clear, uncluttered grammar is useful in all contexts.

        • +8

Great. English speakers will know even less about English than they do now.

      • +15

Agree - and don't underestimate people's ability to spot an AI email in a microsecond.

      • -1

I asked AI to enhance what you said. I actually like the AI version a bit more than your original.

I find much of this approach quite silly. For example, one scenario highlighted was someone notifying their boss about needing to leave early on Friday. They wrote something like, “Yo boss, sorry to do this, but I booked a camping site for Friday, so I need to leave early.”

While Apple’s “intelligence” transformed this casual note into a more professional message, I question why someone would write it that way in the first place. Many of the proposed use cases for this AI feel impractical to me. Personally, I trust my own writing skills over any AI-generated content, so I have little interest in relying on it.

I understand that Apple’s system is essentially a customized solution using Google’s Gemini AI engine. However, I believe AI still has a long way to go before I can fully trust it.

        • Microsecond.

        • +1

This sounds like some snooty old Pommy man talking. People don't converse like that. Hence why I wouldn't use it.

If I wanted to write in a more formal manner, I would. That's not what I was trying to do so saying you like the AI version better is irrelevant. I was speaking informally to suit this forum, hence illustrating the original point. If I posted what AI wrote here instead, people would think it very odd for a casual discussion

The ChatGPT app on the iPhone is great and doesn't depend on a chip to do all that. It may not be seemless but you can work around it. I pay the $20pm for unlimited 4o access and love it.

      • +2

        Isn’t it $30/mth?

        • +1

Yeah I'm paying around 32 per month for it

          • +8

@Tachos: (profanity) me that's a lot. Not worth it to me

            • +2

@justtoreply: It's not worth it for most, no. The free version is great for most daily tasks. I actually use it quite a bit for work. Microsoft want $50 a month for their Copilot licence billed yearly which also uses 4o.

        • +1

Oh yeah, thanks for the correction. Just checked my CC statement and yep it's actually closer to $33AUD as OpenAI also charges 10% GST bringing it to $22USD

The free account does work on the app though and would suit almost everyone. You only get a limited use of 4o but for general use GPT3 is fine.

      • -2

Which is bigger, 9.9 or 9.11?
ChatGPT: 9.11 is bigger than 9.9. This is because 9.11 is closer to 10, while 9.9 is closer to 9.

    • Karen office email nah nah

Me just stalking every iPhone deal to make myself feel better about shelling out 950 odd on the 16 yesterday. Goddamn people pay a lot for phones these days.

  • +3

how did you pay 950 for the iphone 16?

    • +31

      iPhone 16 - 1397.
Signup to 24 month Telstra in store at JB, get 1200 voucher for iPhones, pay out of pocket $197 for phone, and first $99 for the plan.
Go to Telstra, shit can the deal, get your $99 refunded, then pay out the "Early Termination Fee" which was 766 for me.

$766, plus $197 equals 963. Take off a tenner for signing up with JB Perks (again), and $953 was the final figure.

Bonus points for calling the mother in law on the way home to see if she wanted to kick in as it's an xmas prezzie for the missus like I did.

Pretty sure the deal ended yesterday mind you, but it was very easy.

      • +2

Pretty sure the deal ended yesterday mind you, but it was very easy.

@TheDukeOfNukem Devastating I only found this out today. $1000 now :(

      • +2

Was this deal available online? Didn't see it get posted on OzB

        • yes where is this?

          • +1

@prankster: Gone, only $1000 now. It was discussed in the JB HiFi $99 / $1200 GC thread.

            • @Twenty2four4: It’s $1000 gift card now, but it’s on $89/month plan instead of $99/month for the same allowances. So over the life of the plan, you’re $40 better off on the current deal.

        • +1

It was within the bowels of the JB Hifi $1200 Gift Card thread

        • Is my understanding correct you use the $1000 vouchers when signing up or?

      • +8

        God tier ozbargaining

      • +5

I thought you had to repay the voucher if you cancelled?

        • +1

          Me too

        • +1

          You do

          • @johnnyutah2: Yeah the story doesn’t add up when reading the T&Cs of Telstra.

        • I don't really know how to reply to everyone on here at once, but yeah, just picked the thing up (got the call last night but couldn't sneak out without the missus catching wind I was doing something). No wuckas.

Money's (99) back in the account, phone's in my hand, contract is terminated, all done.

      • What the hec? You dont have to send the phone back?

  • +15

    Will Israel bomb the phone?

  • oooh hoping for a pro deal with at least 512gb

  • -4

Yet the deal I posted for the 14 Pro max was shit apparently when it's only $400 more? Some very strange people are on OzB.

    • +2

A grand is 400 off the new one. 1400 is the same price as the new one. Most would take the new one and ignore the Pro Max stuff of a two year old model as a trade off happily.

    • +3

      That's a paddling.

  • +23

Two year old phone for only $400 less than an equivalent brand new 16. Not sure this is a good deal.

    • +3

$600 less than the 16 Plus. Not exactly an insignificant amount.

      • Ah I did miss that it was the plus. Makes it a bit more palatable if you definitely want Big Phone.

  • +7

    For what it's worth

if it was its worth it'd be <$800

  • +3

    Not USB C charging.

    • +2

Not a deal breaker , but for some it'll be the end of the world I'm sure .

      • -1

or for some (many), a deal breaker.

  • -1

Do these have USB C or can it be put on

    • +7

      wdym 'put on'

    • +1

      Nope, not a wearable.

      • +1

Yr username reminded me it's insertable tho

    • Would have been faster to Google than post here and wait for a response

  • +1

Iphone 14plus 128 is $1249 on apple au so its not really 450 off

  • +2

Big NO if its not USB-C

    • +1

      What is this, the EU?
      But yeah, big agree.

    • a big yes if it is not USB-C

  • +2

14 plus uses same chip as iPhone 13, so literally iPhone 16 will be 60% faster , while with gift 10% off RRP it’s like 40% price difference between 16 plus and 14 plus. Apparently the extra money is worthy, but cheaper one is always an option. If you don’t need plus, definitely get 16 unless 14 is less than $800

  • +1

I looked at this listing and really had to think for a few moments what number iphone we're actually up to. It's all getting a bit silly now.

  • -1

as cliché as it sounds, AI might actually be the best "feature" for the past 10 years if it is implemented decently.
Reason i say that is my camera got "AI feature, tracking subject" it is actually really sticky.
Also AI voice, AI image, it is a real useful enhancement over the existing tools, I think now we can finally start calling them "smart".

i gonna stick with my 12 and see how the 16 AI stuff goes, otherwise i will just get 14 or 15 anyway. 999 is still a lot of money, might as will add few hundred to get the latest.

  • Not enough storage.

    • why dosent apple use:
      sd cards
      webms
      australian pricing no double dollars
normal copy paste of files on and off each mobile device

lets face it apple is predatory and backwards
i can get a phone with more space for WAY cheaper WITH the ability to transfer files across the board!
apple wanted to shut down free speech platform x
and didnt let epic games get their own app due to a mandatory apple tax
      apple is full of itself
now is the time to jump ship

  • Just want to make a collage on photos app without using shortcuts/other apps, even the AI cant do that yet.

  • +2

my god the idea of buying a new phone with a lightning port

  • +1

    will it boom?

    • good comment all lithium batteries can now be remotely detonated by 3 letter agencies. the info is out in the public now.
