ShopBack Introduces Its Paid Membership - ShopBack Plus. Will You Pay for It?

Of course not, I am not stupid.
Golden rule: Never buy things just because they offer a high cashback rate. It is not reliable at all.

    OzBargain Platinum is better value

    • +6

I have OzBargain Platinum Ultra Plus. It's worth the extra tree fiddy per month.

I tried one of those cashback deals years ago. Never again, it feels like a scam.

    • +4

Can’t buy it though, you need to be selected by the elders

No but it does include unnecessary bold

        • +3

          No, just extra pointless comments.

Refuse to let cashback schemes control my purchasing decisions nor get sucked into the ‘will it payout or not’ stress. No way paying for that privilege on top.

  • +33

Given Shopback's track record on this site, with so many regularly disgruntled users and a rep that is only sometimes available to respond, I find it laughable they are the first cashback outfit to launch with this kind of model.

    “Priority” customer service support?

    C'mon now.

What a complete way to alienate loyal members/sufferers over the years.

Perhaps they need a new income stream to keep the lights on?

Cash out any new credits ASAP!

    • I'm surprised these cashback services continue to be so popular, honestly. The whole setup is messy and doesn't provide confidence. I gave up on them years ago. If a store wants to run a promotion, they can bloody well do it properly and not rely on these sketchy third parties to track purchases and (maybe) pay it out weeks-months later.

  • I saw the movie The Social Network (The Facebook) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1285016/plotsummary/?ref_=tt_ov… and remember the part where Saverin wanted to sell ad space to generate revenue…

Zuckerberg, never one interested in money (lol), didn't want to go that route as the ads would make the site lose its "cool" factor, which made it popular.

I hope that ShopBack don't slay the Golden Goose for a quick buck.

    Q. Consultation?
    A. None.

An alternative way to go would be to tier reward loyal and high volume users of Shopback that I would imagine be the profit centre without charging a grubby fee.

You are total F**L if you are buying things because of the Shopback incentives. I have seen all the dramas here.

  • +12

2024 has been a good year for laughably bad paid premium services

  • +4

Is it paid? It seems like it's free… I don't have any options to pay for it at least

And as usual, it depends on what's on offer. If it's $30 a year, and they seem to offer $5 off a gift card every month then it's a free $30 a year, so bit of a no brainer to sign up.

People here pay for lots of subscriptions they don't need from TV garbage to ebay Plus etc., makes sense for cashback places to start something similar. People act like they're above it but they'll pay if the offering is good enough.

      • No mention of price on that link

          • +5

@Dumax: $5 per month with a single $5 reduction in any gift card purchased seems neutral to me

            • +1

@TheFreaK: Yes it's not a terrible deal since you can (for now) offset the cost with $5 gift cards. However, I wonder how long that'll last before a minimum spend is introduced. Plus Day could be interesting if it's not some obscure vendors but the current "boosted" cashbacks are a joke.

It's also no clear if the cost is on a cycle or only monthly (i.e. if you sign up on the last day of the month, you get charged again immediately).

            • +8

              @TheFreaK:

              seems neutral to me

How much is your time worth f*ing around with $5 GCs?

Why pay for getting yourself more misery service? Getting tempted by higher casher which will tracked but could ends up as calculating, then go through the process to whine about how dodgy they are etc and not responding to query.

    • Why pay for getting yourself more misery service?

Hey, no need to kink shame is there?

    HODL

  • +1

Appears to be $4.99 per month.

  • +2

    Payment Method
$4.99 per month deducted from Cashback, or charged to credit or debit card

By proceeding, you're agreeing to start your ShopBack PLUS subscription immediately. The subscription will auto-renew each month.

  • +2

Once you’ve opted in, your ShopBack Plus subscription will auto-renew every month after the trial period. We’ll deduct the subscription fee from your Cashback balance or linked debit or credit card. Because ShopBack Plus lets you earn higher Cashback, you’ll likely earn enough to cover the subscription fee. But if not, don’t worry, you won’t need to to pay the fee. You can cancel any time by going to Account > ShopBack Plus.

That don’t worry, you won’t need to to pay the fee (sic) seems incredibly vague and in dire need of more details, but arguably makes this worthwhile/risk free if it’s as simple as “we only bill you if you got $4.99 of value from Plus this month” (eg. redeemed the $5 gift card promo).

    • Seems contradictory to the agreement from Join Now. It was going to charge me $4.99 and there is no free trial: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15718948/redir

@gotyourback Can you please clarify with your team? The free trial doesn't appear to be offered and confusing terms. Is the monthly fee waived if you don't earn $5 of cashback from the subscription? Thanks.

        • @gotyourback Thanks. Is there a free trial?

Once you’ve opted in, your ShopBack Plus subscription will auto-renew every month after the trial period.

    • Possibly copy and paste error from ShopBack Singapore: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15721378/redir

      • This wouldn't be the first time they've f'd up their vague and ambiguous terms with a copypasta screw up 🤦🏻‍♂️

  • +7

how about they pay me for every (profanity) scam email the shopback alias receives after they bent over and let their database get violated

Edit: Could you post it as a deal instead so we can downvote?

  • I'll probably be subscribed for a month each time I need to buy a gift card from ShopBack.

If it's $4.99 to join and you get a $5 off gift card voucher each time it's a freebie?

    • There's possibly no cashback earned on the $5 code redemption value so that it is a small loss.

      • +1

        You do earn cashback though.

    • +3

If you have to pay $5 to get $5, that's not a freebie.

      • +1

So for example, I was always going to buy this 7-Eleven gift card today at 4% off. Whether I paid the full amount for the gift card or got $5 off for paying for ShopBack Plus for a month I'm out the same amount of money, but for this month I get whatever shitty benefits they offer.

Of course the key point is whether or not you were going to get a gift card from them anyway.

        • +1

Yeah that's fair. You've then got a month to grab a bunch of other things to take advantage of it. But an ongoing $5 subscription to get the same amount back isn't a freebie in my view as they cancel each other out. The only freebies could be the upsized cash backs.

  • +1

For me Shopback had turned from "worth the risk" to "don't do it". Then I raised this poll.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/864339

From 100+ responses, around a third had problems and not a single one was resolved by reporting via their website.

    • You'll get this from any cashback site though.

The reason I stopped using Cashrewards was exactly this - I purchased a book or something with something like 20-50% cashback, can't remember what now. Then they just flat out denied it and support was useless/never helped.

So unless you plan on skipping all cashback apps, you'll find that the experience is going to be the same on each regardless. Just pick whichever one benefits you the most.

      • +1

Personally SB has been extremely hit or miss.

I prefer CR any day of the week.

        • CR has been pretty great for me too.

Customer service has been good as well. I had a big ticket item (cashback of ~$100+) and it didn't register, so I reached out and they sorted it out for me.

      • +1

The experience is definitely not the same for me. I screen record every SB transaction knowing it's highly likely they'll deny any upsized cash backs. Then I throw it in their face when they try and reject it. Without those recordings, I'd be at a 50% success rate rather than 100%.

  • I can see where this is going, prob time to stop using shopback.

  • Will the membership fee be eligible for cashback?

They would probably still mess it up and not process.

    • +1

Shopback Plus Membership may be listed on CR or TCB so that you earn cashback there.

  • Ahahahahah ahahaha ahahaha

    Noooooooo

I have to create an account just to be able to see the price of this “subscription” therefore I’ll just have to make my judgement uninformed.

    Even longer Nooooooooooooooo

  • +3

Hahaha, (fropanity) no. Every second day there is another post complaining about this shit outfit company.

Imagine being that much of a cuck for this establishment that you would pay them for them to sell your data and to get kickbacks by directing your sales… then for them to be hacked and leak all your personal data and not tell you about it for a few days, and let you know at 10pm on a Friday night… and then send you a $3 “we’re sorry” voucher…

    Pay for ShitBack, lol.

  • +1

Guess the Westpac and St George money is drying up.

    • +1

Probably partnership contract is due in a few months so that SB needs to find a new way to lock in customers.

  • +6

So much hate for shopback. My life time earnings is about $2500 (not just gift cards) Yes some of them don't track and it's not perfect but I still save. I always keep in mind that cash backs are bonuses, great if it tracks, not the end of the world if it doesn't and move on.

    • Mine is approaching $2000. The question is, are you going to sign up to this paid subscription model?

      • If I'm about to buy something expensive and I could benefit, maybe. But im probably wait until I read more ozbargain comments in the future to see it's worth.

    • without cashback, sellers still offer traditional discount to make their sales so it is troublesome and pointless to support cashback bs. I was wondering how often you track the traditional discount and how much you would get without cashback. it is not hate but cashback is really a silly concept for buyers while you can have a better option.

      • If you don't like the concept, remove all cashback post from your feed and move on.

        • +2

i just share my opinion and I don't mean going against you. does it hurt your feeling? I never support and even avoid buying anythings with cashback :D.

          • @vchar: All good for your opinion, my point is let it go and move on.

    • 26/26 tracked for me.

      • Rookie numbers 😉

  • +1

on the same topic, what's one premium service / membership that's worth paying for? e.g. amazon prime, ebay plus, dashpass, spotify premium etc

amazon prime for me but the new ads on Prime Video is criminal

  • Sorry - don't they already take a clip on the cash backs and also make it painful to chase when they're not tracked properly, then make you wait months for it…sorry but no thans.

  • +1

Just joined purchased a $5 gift card, applied $5 coupon, no gift card and coupon gone. Not sure where this priority customer service is, their virtual bot is probably the worst thing I've interacted with. Not a great start

    • +1

No surprises when it’s up to the OzB community to point out their contradictory terms in this very thread before they’re fixed. Appears like a bunch of amateurs on a money grab mission.

      • +2

It ended up coming through couple hrs later, weird as other gift cards are almost constantly accessavle

  • +2

guys, can we dump all these shopback/cashback bs? I find it stupid enough to wait and chase for your discount to get money into your bank account. this is another level of stupidity that we need to pay for memberships.

if everyone dumps all these bs , sellers will still offer discount through traditional methods.

    • +1

I have no problem with affiliate/discount links from people that provide content or blogs or whatever that I find useful, but to simply act as a middle man and take a cut of the discount is a business model I can’t support.

    • +3

Eh, I'm sitting at ~$3,850 lifetime earnings paid out with Shopback, ~$2,450 with CashRewards, ~$540 with TopCashBack. Certainly only do things that are worthwhile for you, but I can't really complain.

It's pretty easy free money that adds up over time and usually stacks nicely with the other discounts offered by the services, and has no real downside at all on your side.

      • -1

        Has no real downsides?
Data Breach? YMMV but not being tracked? Limited support? No thanks.

        • "No real downsides" here was in reference to cashback schemes generally, not necessarily Shopback specifically. If you're going to make a purchase, it's usually worthwhile to click through from a cashback service 99% of the time. The only exception I can think of is hotel and travel sites, which often adjust prices drastically based on affiliate links, making it worthwhile to comparing prices with and without.

Honestly, though, I'm not convinced any service differs significantly from others in terms of tracking. All these services operate on the same principle: they sign up for a service's affiliate program, make it easy for you to click through, receive a percentage from the merchant, and pass on a portion to you. Sometimes they use their marketing budget to offer you a bit more.

Most tracking issues occur because the end service didn't trigger the affiliate link. This usually happens if you have an ad blocker on or clicked from somewhere else that "stole" the affiliate attribution. You'd likely face the same issue with that transaction regardless of which cashback service you use.

That said, I'm certainly not denying there's an advantage to having reps like TA, who bat for you when issues arise and are willing to go the extra mile for goodwill.

  • Signed up for the plus membership yesterday and bought a giftcard with the discount successfully. Now today I have tried to buy 2 GCs, have been charged for both but they arent showing up in my app. Bot useless. Same customer support as before via their crapbot. Good idea, horrible execution.

  • Cash rewards for the win. Tracks better imo.

  • +2

I'd pay for it if I got 100% cashback at Pizza Hut once a month

  • +2

    Pay subscription.

    Nekminut, "cashback declined"

  • No thanks.

  • Pay $4.99 to get $5 back? Such an attractive offer to receive that 1c bonus 🤣 What a bunch of 🤡s. Shopback must be high if they think this a worthy endeavour 🤦🏻‍♂️

Will I pay a monthly free for the possibility of higher cash backs? Hell no! They're not going to control my shopping habits. They can fk that idea off right how. But will I pay for it for the bonus offers on big sale days like BF, Prime Day etc and then cancel? Yeah, I can probably see that happening - I'll just cancel it before the month is up

Other than that, this whole idea is a massive joke.

  • +1

Thanks for this post, you've just reminded me to close my account with these losers. Sick of not a single purchase tracking and always having to chase them. Never an issue with Cashrewards or Topcashback. They should be banned from this site.

  • I normally always use Topcashback. Seem to work OK with no probs?

  • I'm not joining. In fact, it's such a turnoff going on to their site and seeing the "special" rates and promotions I'll actively preference their competitors.

  • +2

Absolutely farking NOT. My gears were ground enough by the bom/stg exclusive rates, ignoring westpac. Now they have further removed good rates from average users. Cashrewards where ever possible thanks.

  • +1

I see today 5/10/24 they have simply reduced their Amazon rates half a percent for non shopback plus members and are offering the plus members the old regular rate as a benefit.

Does this site ever rally together to combat such practices?
