Nulon Petrol Injector Cleaner 300ml $9.49 (Was $19.99) + Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ Supercheap Auto

590

Hi all,

This stuff is definitely getting up there in price since COVID but the big bottle is more than half price off rrp right now and cheaper than the smaller bottles, so still technically a bargain . As for whether these ingredients are effective at their job- you'd better ask Google that.

Cheers

This is the only snake oil I think probably works. May pick one up.

I chuck it in my car every year or so when half price. Never had a fuel problem but my cars are not high mileage so probably a coincidence.

      • Correlation doesn’t mean causation.

        Indeed.
I run snake oil in my 4WD to keep the DPF clear.

Do I have DPF issues? NO

Do I recommend anyone else use it? NO

Want to buy some of my magic miracle cure ? It tastes like water, looks like water but it'll cure you right up. Will turn your piss from yellow to clear.

  • These are good for two tanks so $4.75 per tank

I watched a bloke whinge to a service station owner about the price of this then go put the whole thing in the tank of his small car.

I work at a servo and this also happens for two stroke oil for mowers. No one reads the label and just assumes every jerrycan is the same capacity, but will whinge about the price.

  • Amazon same price but delayed delivery

      • Thanks for sharing the link for diesel injector. How can I confirm if it suits my diesel vehicle (Tuscon 2017)?

        • +1

Probably best to look at the product website https://www.nulon.com.au/products/additives/fuel-treatment/d…

          It states

Cleans dirty injectors in one tankful
Cleans Internal Direct Injector Deposits in Common Rail Diesel Engines
Suitable for diesel engines including common rail

I would say, yes it’ll be fine for your Tucson.

Also note, the delivery time varies, I purchased the petrol variant on 13th and it arrived today 14th.

From reading many other OzBargain posts about fuel injector cleaners, the generally accepted advice seems to be to stick to the ones that contain PEA, as they actually contain chemicals that can remove sludge from injectors.

    • Any idea of this stuff vs putting ethanol (solvent) fuel in the tank occasionally?

      • PEA (i.e. Polyetheramine) is known to break down carbon AND will survive very high temperatures. So it can clean injectors and exhaust systems.

Ethanol will quickly evaporate in the heat of the engine.

        • Cheers. But the injector clog is normally on the inside of the nozzle, which is cooled by the fuel rail. Guess if it's an internal clog… ethanol. If that fails, go for a PEA, as it may be external.

Don't suppose you know what dissolves LPG slime/wax build up in dual fuel cars?

          Ethanol doesn't.

          • @tunzafun001: Doesn't E10 contain 10% ethanol?

            • @zealmax: Yes, yes it does.

              • @beach bum: Would this clean the injectors?

                • @zealmax: Maybe, but more issues with carbon build up from low octane fuel .
Better off using high octane fuel that combats both issues.
Or 50/50 98and95 or at least 25/75 and minimise 91 use and avoid the ethanol blend completely .
But this may also depend on how your particular engine is designed to run and the timing setting , but as a general rule buy the best you can afford and if you see some benefit keep it up.

                  • +1

@beach bum: Commo has got 750 000 km on it. It's never seen anything other than 91 or E10.
I only used E10 when I knew it would be used in one hit (ie 600km trip).
Makes no sense to put anything above 91 in a standard compression ratio engine. 95 won't hurt it, only your wallet. BP etc supposedly add something to their field..but that happens on all grades.

                    • @tunzafun001: Yes and they’re specifically designed to take it being retarded and all .

I had acceleration issues with my car and my mechanic suggested dirty injectors so I did a fair amount of research to find out what is the best stuff to use and everything pointed to PEA. I researched which products contained PEA firstly (via their Safety Data Sheet where available) and then researched which contained the most % of PEA. It came down to 2 products - Red Line® SI-1 Complete Fuel System Cleaner and AR6400-G Gasoline Fuel System Cleaner. The latter is only available from https://www.x3emotorsports.com/shop/archoil which the US based company advised me. I'm not a scientist so can't categorically say that these things work but what I learnt. As far as my acceleration issues go, turned out to be simply changing the leads and spark plugs. Anyway interesting knowledge gained. Hope that helps someone.

My car was vibrating occasionally when slowing down or stopped at the lights (has 128,000km on the odometer). I gave this a shot based on my dad's advice and it seems to happen less often now. So for me it seems to work.

    • What car do you have? Sounds like a dirty MAF sensor and/or throttle bottle. Very easy to clean yourself (valvoline sell a 2-in-1 product for it for like $8) followed by an ECU reset.

    • It could also be a vaccum leak, where the engine is sucking in extra air through a leak.

      • Yeah my scooter had a broken vacuum line that caused this. All he needs is a brake cleaner spray and go spraying around the engine to find it.

    • Yeah even I believe it works. I use this everytime it's on offer but this year I waited for longer and I did see fuel consumption a little higher bout 6.4-6.5l/100kms (might be my driving style) but after using it I noticed it did drop 6-6.1l/100kms. Least I've seen in this car is 5.9l/100kms

They are more or less the same: Snake Oil™.

The ones that contain polyetheramine might actually make a difference, but they are generally more expensive:

      https://www.repco.com.au/oils-fluids/additives/fuel-additive…

      https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/rislone-high-performance…

      https://autobarn.com.au/ab/Nulon-Pro-Strength-Petrol-Fuel-Sy…

      • Looking at the Repco Q&A for their Repco RFSC500 product, it appears they no longer use PEA, but a newer chemistry called PIBA, which is supposedly better. Their product description still mentions polyetheramine, so I think they need to update it.

"Does this product (RFSC500) actually has polyetheramine? The bottle appears to quote PEA performance tests but a previous Q&A state no PEA used.

Hi, Thanks for your inquiry. Response from our Supplier below:
The Deposit Control Additive (DCA) chemistry used in RFCS500 is the latest technology available, it is the more modern Polyisobutyleneamine (PIBA) DCA chemistry, not the older Polyetheramine (PEA) DCA chemistry."

it appears they no longer use PEA, but a newer chemistry called PIBA, which is supposedly better.

Yes, just saw that. At the very least it's misleading marketing. I am not a chemist, but my understanding is PIBA (and PIB) is cheaper, but PEA is theoretically still better because it doesn't decompose even in the high heat of the combustion chamber.

          https://www.goldeagle.com/tips-tools/how-pick-fuel-additive-…

PEA is the strongest cleaning agent. It cleans and protects more parts than PIB or PIBA, especially direct fuel injectors.

  • dang I just fueled up last night. Would it matter if I pour this in when fuel tank is already full?

    • +1

no it will just disperse inside.

    • +4

Just go fast over some bumps and do some sharp turns to mix it all around ;-)

    • +2

Alternatively, buy one anyway and just save it for the next fill up? 🤔

    • Here's an idea, wait…

  • I tried the repco one few months ago. 2 for $16 in camry. Didn't notice much, just that it feels like you are on 98 fuel. I usually go by 91 fuel. No clue if it cleaned anything inside. I guess there isn't a way to verify that.

Be aware there is a little round of plastic under the lid that can fall into the container then be poured into the fueltank.
It may clog a fuel filter somehow maybe.

Personally I use chemtec diesel power for the extra power/fuel economy it gives you .
I suspect it’s just kero but it seems to work .
For fuel economy I have a reusable air filter that I clean and oil regularly.
Also havgone back to a 10w40 that is originally recommended rather than the 15w50 or 20w60 that they are pushing for older improved warming up time and fuel economy I believe.

Used to use this kind of thing in the bike , did sweetfa .
Only thing that helped was again cleaning that AF and changing the oil , 98 also was worth running through through the bike regularly.

  • Yeah if you're good/very good can change your injector baskets+ o rings. Will do more than this but you have to be more or less perfect putting them back on. Was sceptical, but had some good drives after using this.

    • Are injector baskets a common removal part on injectors or primarily aftermarket?

      • The injectors need to use baskets or filters. Guess you could clean or replace. Or just flush. Should do o rings if taking it that far.

Thanks OP, bought 3. Check out their other clearance items. They've got some sunshades on special. Unsure of quality though.

    • Update: I picked up the Medium Window sunshade, opened it up and it's very sturdy. I think it will last long. For $5, I think it's a really good price. The size will fit most sedans and hatchbacks.

  • Thanks OP.

    Bought two.

Looks like you're meant to use it on a empty tank, then after 2500km use the other half.

  • Thoughts on Nulon's other fuel system cleaner?

Just over $20/500mL on Sparesbox ebay store after 15%/17% ebay plus code.

I tried looking in their SDS but couldn't find the chemicals/ingredients. Was looking for PEA/polyetheramine.
