60% off IKEA Smart Cellular Blinds (e.g. PRAKTLYSING 60x195cm $89) + Delivery ($0 C&C) @ IKEA (IKEA Family Membership Required)

850

A while back I considered getting a few of these but the cost was unappealing and I had seen mixed reviews on their quality, but last night browsing the IKEA website saw they are running on discount for September.

I bought three TREDANSEN block-out blinds and hooked them up via an IKEA Tradfri hub. Pairing via the old IKEA home app was a pain so might move them across to a Homebridge/Phoscon/Deconz set up.

E.g:

  • TREDANSEN Block-out cellular blind, 100x195 cm, $119 / Normal price $299 Link
  • PRAKTLYSING Cellular blind, 140x195 cm, $129 / Normal price $329 Link

Not sure if they're discontinuing altogether or bringing in new zigbee versions (see here), similar to some of IKEA's other smart home products.

      Hey! You're not JV

structure is made similar to that of a honeycomb design (cross section). Its meant to provide better insulation than of normal blind. I’ve been using them for about 5 years for the smaller windows in my room (not ikea brand) and has been pretty good in-terms of durability. Insulation idk as i got just single glass so the heat loss is quite high anyway

      • cheers. That makes sense, any tearing issues?

        • +1

None. Held up really well. But keep in mind its made out of some sort of paper, so if you are letting it get wet in rain it might degrade faster :-).

I use it for awning style window if that helps ✌️

Cellular should have been in bold not italics.

I was interested in these once so looked at them in person.

They feel like they are made of thin paper and the mechanism on one display model was already broken.

Felt cheap and like it would break after 3 uses.

    • Ditto. From my brief look in store I believe the entire mechanism relies on the motor rolling in/out two very thin ropes (strings really); the entire cellular structure is made of very thin material and simply slides over the strings.

If it gets caught on anything I’d expect it to tear or break somehow quite readily. The display model only went up on one side

    • Exactly

    • Hence 60% off

    do they support band 28?

    • +1

      Yes, but 3G only.

  • Can i use Eneloops in them?

  • The first question from Vodafone support about your reception problem - do you have the cellular blinds from Ikea installed?

  • Totally read this as paralysing…

My brain just ignores IKEA product names. Not sure if that's a good thing or not.

  • I wonder how people use these? So 360 days a year I want to leave my windows open but I want to block the sun or have some privacy at night. But whenever I have these (without side guides), or just normal horizontal or vertical blinds they flap in the wind like crazy. I should probably use plantation blinds, shouldn't I?

    • +1

      flap in the wind

Th….these go inside the house my man. Inside.

      • +1

Bu…. but how do you keep the wind outside the house when the windows are open my man? How?

      • Of course inside. Then you open the window to get fresh air (but not the sun) and it starts flapping, just as I described. Just as I described.

    • +1

I want to leave my windows open

As you've discovered, you can't use free-hanging blinds with open windows. For obvious reasons !

Plantation shutters will do the job.

    • You need some smart windows…

  • wynstan smart roller blinds would be a better option but need hard-wiring

I don't use IKEA blinds, but I have motorised double wall honeycomb blinds I've been rocking for 4+ years and no issues with quality.
Have also has a dog and a toddler in that time.

They are also a light material and run on about 2-4 strings.

Just in reply to some quality concerns above, but YMMV with IKEA vs the fitted made to measure brand I got.

I'm keen on this set up. Please tell us more.

I think this reddit thread is pretty telling, has put me off buying. The initial posts seem pretty positive but then this later follow-up comment from the OP is scathing. Hopefully this link works https://www.reddit.com/r/tradfri/comments/w7qgrq/comment/jxg…

    • I applaud the attempt to offer a product like this at a cheap price point so normal humans can afford the luxury of automation.

Automated blind market in Australia has been dominated by super expensive (and super arrogant) brands like Somfy where just a motor can cost upwards of $400 without a blind (likely needing replacing in 5 years if used a lot). But.. there is a limit here, something that is automated can't be using cheap fragile ropes and weak gearing, when (not if) it breaks the motor will make sure the damage is significant.

The material here looks like the same quality as their manual system blind, which is an OK product if you are gentle and don't pull to fast or hard, and don't let cats anywhere near the "paper" material as it tears to pieces pretty fast.

Would have made more sense to use an ordinary roller mechanism with the motor, simple.. hard to fail.. probably not much more expensive to build for ikea. Also could be fitted to any size blind, rather than being restricted to fixed sizes that pretty much means none of these blinds will likely neatly fit inside any windows frames. (unless your lucky and have those exact sizes)

IKEA was always cheap stuff but I reckon most of their stuff is just trash these days. They keep cutting quality to hold prices down.

Saw on reddit today a story where they are replacing metal cams on bookcases with plastic cams that can easily break during assembly. You might argue that for most uses it's fine, but it is evidence of lower build quality which I wouldn't have thought possible 20 years ago, lol.

I have been looking for a new sofa so I went to IKEA last week. All of them are trash and most reviews complain that the cushioning quickly compresses and loses shape. eg people who owned an old ektorp vs a new ektorp complain the quality has gone down.

    • Prices have gone up but I'm still happy with the quality of everything I bought about a year ago (including sofa). It's the widest range and easiest to assemble of flatpack furniture which is ultimately cheaper for what you get.

      • Quality has definitely dropped, got some furniture recently including sofa.

Still leaps above Kmart stuff but it has dropped quite a lot over time. Not surprising though given the cost of things at the moment.

The reviews do not sound very positive. There seems to be a production/design issue with string pull up or move down the blind. It fails after several months.

  • +1

Peak OzB. “Apparently these are pretty shit but they’re on sale!”

    • A hundo isn't that cheap is it?

  • +5

Some people have had luck with getting them pretty cheap custom sized from Alibaba(cheaper) and AliExpress (more expensive) on the renovation reddit page.

  • +2

A lot of ignorant comments on here. Cellular blinds are a good cost effective way to achieve insulation especially for those with single glazed windows. Unless you have an unruly pet/child/wife you don't need a "good quality" cellular blind. Anyway, It doesn't make sense for this to be made of expensive materials the structure itself achieves its purpose.

Tldr: cheap way to implement passive house principles

    • Is there no gaps around the blind? I have heard that if you don't have a pelmet for curtains they aren't very useful and the room will just cool anyway

      • Depends how you install it. Someone mentioned AliExpress here, you can get it custom to fit
