Do Council Payments Qualify for Credit Card Points?

Are council payments considered government payments therefore don't qualify for points/miles for most credit cards ?

I want to meet my minimum spend to get the bonus points for a new Qantas credit card. I just don't want to pay council rates and get nothing.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thank you

  • Depends on the card, some do allow. Write them a message and get it in writing.

Generally - but not always - not. You can use a service like Sniip to make sure you do get the points. Typically 1.5% fee vs 0.5% fee the council charges, but if you're churning, it's usually only a few dollars.

  • Some councils charging card surcharges (mine is lowest for Amex, 0.6%), but mine has no surcharge for BPAY. But my bank gives no CC points for BPAY.

    • Amex is the lowest? That’s a first.

If you don't pay, they'll repossess your house.

  • Generally, no.

I use zip pay to earn points for these type of utilities and government payments

Yes I use zip pay to get full points.

  • Thanks everyone.

Not worth the risk of paying the rates and not getting the bonus points.

    • Always get the points.

  • Like others have said, you can rinse it through zip pay and pay for that with your card.

Otherwise; you can purchase coles prepaid e-gift mastercards from giftcards.com.au

Most of the time they don't have activation fees so you pay $250 for a $250 card. I tend to do this to pay the ATO as they have a lower transaction fee for debit MC's (0.2%, 50c per $250) and you get full points.

  • Amex , yes.

    Visa/Mastercard, probably not. Check your card's T&Cs.

Bank only thinks you spend money at supermarkets.
