First time posting a deal so please be kind. ^_^

I have been eyeing this SSD for a few weeks now as I am in the midst of building my PC. It has been consistent with the $232.99 price for some time, but today, a $34 off coupon appeared, bringing this SSD down to $198.99! Just apply the coupon the on the Amazon page itself for the discount.

There is no mention as to when the coupon will expire, other than saying 'coupon is valid while stocks last'. Note that the coupon is only valid for the 2TB Platinum SSD, and not the 500Gb or 1Tb capacities.

If you have been eyeing for a SSD with DRAM, here's a good chance to get a 2TB DRAM SSD for under $200.

I believe SK Hynix is made in South Korea and is one of the few SSD companies that has all of its components on the SSD built by SK Hynix themselves without relying on 3rd parties for bits here and there. So the quality control is there. I also believe it is one of the lowest priced SSD with DRAM (even without the price drop).

Enjoy!

If only I had the same level gear to go with it…

I've after 2tb drive as a main windows drive, is this good? How does it compare to Samsung?

    • +6

This is similar to the Samsung 990 pro SSD on performance. It's top level.

      • +1

Review says "Better value is available elsewhere"

        So whats the better value?

        • +2

It was long time ago. That comment was based on the market at that time.

    • +5

Based on the price, there is no reason to recommend 990 Pro. Just go with this one. If 990 Pro has the same price, I will still recommend Hynix P41 personally, but some people may prefer 990 Pro. However, the price has terminated the race.

      • +1

Should I pull the trigger on this one?

        • +1

          Definitely

A lot of 2TB non-DRAM SSDs are sold around this price, if not more, so this coming with DRAM and it being under $200 is quite the deal. Having DRAM usually jacks up the price of 2TB SSDs into the $250 to above $300 range.

DRAM is useful for extremely quick boot-up, running multiple intensive programs, or playing games that you might be on for longer durations. I've read that DRAM also helps when you play games for longer sessions like MMOs and it avoids the game from stuttering as it is able to access data quicker.

@Relsierk: Thanks, bought after reading your comment

Which USB enclosure do you recommend so I can clone it with my existing SSD?

        • +1

You could have hesitated a year or so ago, today this is no brainer.

          • +1

            @dr: thanks, bought it

          • +3

@dr: A year or so ago it was available for $165.

            • @Hawk Tuah: I bought it myself for $178.49 in July 2023, still this is a good price given the competition.

    • +1

Hard to find any Gen4 drive that beats Hynix P41 Platinum at any price point, this one is bee's knees for a desktop/laptop machine.

      • Totally agree! Even without the discount, it is the lowest priced SSD with DRAM cache as far as I know, with performance equal to the other more common brand names.

Now at under $200, it is even cheaper than some 2TB SSDs without DRAM!

  • +2

not sure how this compares but there is a 2TB Western Digital SN580 at Centrecom for $149

    https://www.centrecom.com.au/wd-blue-sn580-2tb-m2-2280-nvme-…

    • +7

completely different category in terms of performance

      • +1

Does that mean the sk hynix is a higher tier SSD? Sorry, noob question.

        • +5

Yes, the SN580 is down the "affordable" side of the WD product line.

        • +1

yeah sorry for being unclear i meant to paint the hynix more favourably 😅

      • +1

how come they look the same to me spec wise?

        • +1

in terms of terabyte count they're the same, but they're very different otherwise. which specs are you looking at?

          • +1

            @lachlantula: PCIe NVMe Gen4 M.2 2280

            • +3

              @geshc: sn580:
              Sequential Read: 4,150 MB/s
              Sequential Write: 4,150 MB/s
              Random Read: 600,000 IOPS
              Random Write: 750,000 IOPS
              Endurance: 900 TBW

              p41:
              Sequential Read: 7,000 MB/s
              Sequential Write: 6,500 MB/s
              Random Read: 1,400,000 IOPS
              Random Write: 1,300,000 IOPS
              Endurance: 1200 TBW
              + has a dram cache

in this case bigger number is better

              • @lachlantula: Bought SN580 recently as boot drive for a new PC. While the performance of the Sk Hynix one is obviously better, I doubt you’d be able to see the a noticeable difference in boot times, etc. between the two.

Also DRAMless hasn’t been much too much worse than DRAM SSDs for a while now I think, since HMB lets a DRAMless drive use the system RAM for write caching and stuff. (Accessing system memory over pcie bus still adds some latency, so performance of dedicated DRAM is still slightly better).

Yes this is me coping that I wasn’t able to buy this SSD :’)

No copuon code for me to apply for.

    • +1

There is no coupon code. The coupon is just checking the box underneath the price on the Amazon product page. Once you check it, it is automatically deducted when you checkout.

      • +1

        Bought one, thank you.

This is a great resource for checking out SSDs and lists this model (sk Hynix P41) in the top tier of those available. The reddit thread it comes from is here: https://www.reddit.com/r/NewMaxx/comments/dhvrdm/ssd_guides_…

    • That's a very good and thorough resource!

    • +1

I don't see the Silicon Power XS70 on there, I assume it's also top tier although not as top tier as this

  • +1

Would anyone know if this would be compatible for adding internal storage to a ps5?

    • +3

Yeah, I have one in my ps5. You'll need a heatsink though.

  • +1

for an idiot, how hard is it to replace the ssd in my desktop with this? do i need a special screwdriver?

    • Not at all, the SSD is usually screwed into place with just a single short Phillip screw. Some motherboards don't even have a screw but just a plastic that swivel and holds it in place. It is very easy to replace; just YouTube some video guide and you will swap it out in no time! ^_^

      • +1

        thank you for the reassurance!

        • +1

Just be gentle initially when lining it up. Watch some YouTube videos if it feels like too much force is needed.

    • +1

There are two types of SSD in your desktop, SATA and NVMe, you first need to check whether your motherboard has any available NVMe/M.2 port

      • +1

thanks. pretty sure ive got a piece of shit kingston 500gb nvme that barely holds 2 games that i will probably just swap out and start fresh on

    • +1

Anyone who can operate manual screwdriver can replace ssd. You will need a "precision" (iow small size philips or pozi) screw bit.

If you bought any of the previous precision screwdriver sets you'll be fine

  • expired its 232 now.

    • Tick the voucher box

      • ahhhh got it thanks.

  • Bought and installed this yesterday. should i try return it for the amazon one?

  • This one is a bit faster for $10 more.
Lexar NM790 SSD 2TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2 2280 Internal Solid State Drive, Up to 7400MB/s, Compatible with PS5, for Gamers and Creators (LNM790X002T-RNNNU) https://amzn.asia/d/36RdXSC

    • NM790 is DRAM less….

      • does DRAM make a huge impact?

        • Probably not with the latest drives. HMB helps overcome a lot of the previous shortcomings of DRAMless drives. In saying that, though, I'd still pick the SK Hynix over Lexar every time.

  • Nearly jumped on this deal last night but read about issues with degraded write speed after a period of use, with only secure erase providing a temporary solution.
