  • How many 3.5 drives can we put inside? Thinking to build 4 bays nas

  • Will this take a low profile 1050ti?

    • +9

Yes, but the power supply is only 180w so theres a good chance that you wont be able to power the GPU (75w~) along with the rest of the machine.

    • -2

If you plan to use the system for tasks that push the CPU and GPU to their limits, or if you want a bit more headroom for reliability, consider upgrading to a PSU with a higher wattage if possible. If you're staying within moderate usage, it could work, but it's a bit of a gamble with the 180W PSU.

      • +7

Existing PSU will be an OEM special. Changing to a consumer PSU will probably make it janklab material due to dimensional limitations.

    • +1

Look for a 3050 low profile for better bang for buck

But I don't think either will work reliably with the standard power supply in this machine

  • +3

I have one of these setup with a GT1030

  • -1

Can you upgrade to win 11 or does it not meet the specs?

    • +6

officially doesn't meet the specs, but rufus will overcome that

    • -1

pretty sure you can I have a 7040 with the same proc.

  • +1

I wonder if you can hack the motherboard to upgrade this with a Coffee Lake CPU?

    • +1

I thought it would take any gen 6 or 7 cpus?
But is there really a point, minimum performance differences…

  • Hard drive
one 3.5-inch hard drive or two 2.5-inch drive

    Solid State Drive
    One 2.5-inch and/or one m.2 PCIe SSD

    Optical drive
    one slim drive

    RAID
The system does not support RAID 0 or RAID 1 capability.

you could install 2 x 2.5 hdds or ssds for some quasi nas type experience

CPU not supported by Windows 11.

    • +3

I'm running windows 11 perfectly well on this exact CPU right now.

@fantombloo: "Mondorock was sentenced to 5 years of Windows ME due to party rocking using an unsupported CPU."

            • +5

@Chandler: I actually didn't mind Windows Me. It offered a lot of useful new features over Win98.

              • @Mr Bob Dobalina: I liked the startup music :D that swirling piano, and stirring french horn.

                • +1

@JownehFixIT: The only downside I found was that it was a bit of a resource/RAM hog. RAM quite often wasn't freed up after you closed a program.

      • How did you do it? Via Rufus? I'm looking to use this as a little dedicated PC for my TV

        • A simple one-key registry edit will do it. I did it just a couple of days ago on my laptop running Windows 10 and is now running Windows 11 very well. The TPM module in my laptop is not supported.

Try the YouTube channel Explaining Computers. The guy there is excellent even if he comes across as a bit of a nerd.

I didn't like the Rufus route because you have to install Win 11 as a new product which means losing all your settings and everything else. The registry hack lets you convert it to Windows 11 in place. Took about an hour and a half all up, half an hour to set it up, and an hour to do the conversion.

        • +1

Easiest way to upgrade to win11 with an unsupported CPU & TPM:
          1. Download Windows 11 ISO (legal link):
          https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11
          2. Use Rufus software to "burn" your bootable ISO onto a USB:
          https://rufus.ie/en/
          3. When "burning" the ISO to USB via Rufus, click the option to skip CPU & TPM Check.
          4. Install Windows 11 via choosing USB as the boot option, the Windows installation will bypass compatibility checks.
          5. There are many other different methods too (e.g. modifying via registry), you can google them for more info. But the above is what I generally do for a fresh installation.

    • I purchased this deal it arrived and have it running win11 Pro and it was activated automatically to my surprise . The installation process is easy and requires 1 minute in a command prompt.

  • +4

This deal is still available for $70 delivered at the same seller on Kogan.

I got it and I am extremely happy with it, the Vega 3 handles games like Tomb Raider 2013 really well.

Valorant was about 720p/60 with tweaks. The CPU TDP is only 12W which is great.

I'm not sure if it had TPM for Win11 or not as I'm now running Linux on it, it's a 2020 Ryzen embedded (Kestrel) CPU. Ryzen RG1505

My unit came with 2x4GB, great WiFi chip & a USB-C display out in the optional slot.

    • Are these good enough to turn into a nas of sorts

      • They are more than powerful enough, however you won't be adding any drives internally as it's a Small Form Factor PC.

    • I wonder if it could run Dota 2 on low….

  • Any good resources for reading up on older processor/iGPU differences? Currently have an aging laptop hooked up to an old plasma TV mainly for streaming Asian dramas, but it struggles with 1080p media, stuttering every few minutes or so depending on the website.

Ideally I'd grab something that's capable of 4k60fps playback (or finally upgrade to a smart TV…)

    • Definitely worth picking up a Chromecast 4K before they're gone. Definitely one of the best bang for buck.

    • +2

You can run Plex or Jellyfin on the laptop, if you have a Chromecast Google TV HD or Fire TV Stick Lite you don't need to process the video encoding on the laptop as it will just be a simple file transfer with the dongle doing the video decoding.

I recommend those two, as they're the cheapest reliable brands with modern codecs, which are needed for them to do the task your laptop can't do, otherwise an old dongle will still require more from the laptop.

Otherwise any TV device you have that supports either Plex or Jellyfin will be good.

      • Guessing the original chromecast wouldn't be up to snuff then? Neat tip on offloading the encoding to a dongle though. Though, with plex/jellyfin I guess I would have to change the workflow from <open up site with streaming media> -> <display on TV> to <download show in advance> -> <shove into plex> -> <load up plex on dongle, play media>?

        • If your content is in H264 (AVC), the original Chromecast should work, but my experience with traditional casting Plex hasn't been great.

The Chromecast Google TV is an onscreen interface that manages everything itself, rather that via your phone.

Your laptop should be connected to the same WiFi router as your TV device, the TV Plex app should be able to see the Plex Media Server installed on the laptop just by it being on the same WiFi.

You simply organise the TV & Movies into cleanly structured folders.

When you create a Movie or Show library, it will ask you where they are located on your laptop.

On your laptop you can setup and organise this by double clicking the Plex logo from the taskbar, which will take you to the webpage http://localhost:32400 or http://localhost:32400/web for you to manage the Plex library.

If you where to prefer to use a different computer to manage that Plex Media installed on your laptop, you could input http://192.168.0.XXX:32400 or http://192.168.0.XXX:32400/web on your the other computer that's on the same WiFi. The XXX being replaced by with a specific number that can be found on the laptop, by opening CMD/Command Prompt and typing "ip config" followed by enter. Otherwise, if it's preferred to just manage it on the laptop itself, ignore this paragraph.

    • +1

You can get this and put in an nVidia 1030. It does media decoding/encoding just fine.

    • Thanks for the resources: mostly wanted to check stuff such as hardware support for x feature/codec being introduced in gen y (e.g. this comment on gen 7 and h.267/vp9)

  • How’s this computer for basic tasks such as web browsing, MS word, and opening a few pdfs?

    • +3

      Not a problem at all.

    • +1

Well above what you will need for any of that, so perfectly capable.

    • Wonderful, I have an even older version performing all the tasks you've listed.
Although I have upgraded to 16 GB of ram, rather than just 8 GB.

      • What Ram / slots does it have? Ordered one, but will keep an eye out for cheap Ram to upgrade it.
Want it for YouTube and Spotify set up as a music player through my amp.

      Awesome, thanks everyone.

      More than enough.

  • +2

    I am addicted to these…. purchased…

    • +1

      What for?

      • Messing around in homelab, currently stuffing around with kubernetes

        • +1

where do you store all this shit?

i live on 2 storeys on 2,000 squares and i have way too much excess tech i bought just because I think "I may need that in the future"

have a pile of thin clients I bought and stuff i inherited from my old job

  • Would this be good to run home assistant?

    • Yes
I use a HP laptop with similar specs to run Haos via a VMware virtual machine. Don't use VirtualBox as it has shit stability issues which went away completely once swapping to VMware.

    • +1

      Yes, but overkill.
You could either get something lower powered, or use this as a Proxmox server with many VMs, including HA.

Ideally for HA, find a micro-PC version, even if it is a little older.

    • +1

Thanks I was initially looking at home assistant green as it was more plug and play. Found this installation vid to help with the OS setup if I go this route https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hAdDtbNMYPM

  • +4

    Bought it. Not sure why.

    • +1

      Thats the spirit!

  • Could this ssd with OS on it, be taken out and used in a new pc using that as the boot drive?

  • Great little machines to run a server with Blue Iris on it.

    • Power bill must be high running this 24/7 as an NVR, no?

      • Nah uses (profanity) all power in my instance. Most of your electric bill is service charges anyway.

I've got this, a NUC as an ESXi server, a couple of Cisco switches and hardly notice the difference. I do have solar to cover half the day, but still.

  • Good price.

I bought a used Dell Optiplex 7040 two years ago.

It is still going well. It replaced a Pentium 11 PC.

    • +2

      Pentium 11? Nice!

  • +5

Anybody buying this for media decoding should know that the CPU is 1 generation before hardware decoding support was added for h.265 10-bit and VP9, both pretty common formats.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Quick_Sync_Video#Develop…

Not a dealbreaker, but will run hotter and a bit noisier (and use more power, though i'm not sure exactly how much).

    • Indeed. i5-7500 is the better alternative. Plex devs announced they're finally adding 10-bit H.265 encode support for transcoding video sometime soon, so that'll be nice for those of us who watch content remotely part of the time.

  • Morning all, is anyone able to confirm if this BIOS supports virtualisation please?

    • +1

      Yep, supports virtualisation.

  • I bought a used Dell Optiplex 7040 two years ago from the same vendor.

It did not come with a WiFi card, but the package included a mini WiFi dongle. This dongle lasted 18 months, until it expired. I bought another mini WiFi dongle from Aliexpress and my WiFi connection was restored.

I note that the description of this DELL OPTIPLEX 7050 makes no reference to it having a WiFi card or that the vendor will supply a mini WiFi dongle.

I presume that these DELL OPTIPLEX 7050s come from an office where the PCs were connected to the internet through a LAN.

  • +3

Buy first , work out purpose second , this is the ozbargain way.

  • Can we play BMW with this one?

  • Can I slap a gtx980 and give this to my partner for light gaming (eg minecraft, stardew valley)

    • Of course, you'll just need to upgrade to a custom high wattage PSU and mod the case to allow the card to stick out the top.

  • The 180w PSU would not be sufficient, you could replace the PSU but would end up sitting outside the case and look somewhat janky. Also pretty sure their are no half height GTX980 anyway.

  • If it helps,

I have exact same PC and currently added just one HDD apart from 256GB SSD.

SSD is running Ubuntu but all other configs and services are running via HDD.

It is runnings Ubuntu server with HA OS and Kali Linux VMs. HA OS is very fast but Kali is a bit slow. May be need to upgrade Ram but not sure yet. Or Kali might work better if run via SSD instead of HDD.
Apart from above, it is also runnings Adguard, nginx ProxyManager, portainer and soon will be adding another HDD to convert it to use it as a NAS using NextCloud.

If anyone has any suggestions, please share. Haven't tried Plex or Jellyfin as never download any movies.

  • Very good computer, good price!

  • +1

We will have more stock for this come online over the next couple of days.

    • Are these units win10 home or pro?

    • Any news on when more stock will be available? Been checking the ebay listing but still out of stock. Thanks.

  • I received a pc without OS today from @ Australian Computer Traders.
I started the pc. It requires a login with government email.
I could not find any instruction on how to start the windows 10 or you had sent me a not ready to use pc?
