Unless you're in the ToolPRO Ecosystem, I would look at getting a USB-C Powered Soldering Iron (ie. Pinecil) and combining with a Power Bank.

This is cool, I had no idea you could get USB powered soldering irons!

Is the one you linked generally regarded as a good model? Are there many others?

      • +7

I personally use the Pinecil (v1) powered by a Xiaomi/ZMI Power Bank when I need to do some soldering.

Here's photo of my Soldering Pouch (old photo).

Other options for portable USB-C Powered Soldering Iron are the Miniware TS100/TS80P

        • Hey @RichardL, did you squeeze the 1m or 1.5m in there? I wonder if I can get away with squeezing the 1.5m cable in there. Just about to put an order through now!

          • +1

@WasBargain: The cable in the pouch is 1m, but you can squeeze the 1.5m one in too (I have both cable).

            • @RichardL: Awesome, thanks buddy! Want to swing us a link for that pouch? 😅 You found the perfect size to fit the mini stand!

              • +1

@WasBargain: I bought it years ago from AliExpress - this was the listing (I'm sure there's cheaper option if you looked).

                • @RichardL: Ohh, damn sleek! Thanks mate! I totally forgot Ali is almost more intuitive nowadays than eBay and you can put "case/cover for X" and some people put listings with the intension sell to those with that item! I'll check later aswell if there's anything else fancier to put it in. 😅

I have a pinecil and highly recommend it. Pair ir up with a good powerbank and you can take soldering wherever you need it.
I also have a weller solder station, which still gets used for heavier stuff that the pinecil do.

This and the Miniware ones mentioned in the other comment are very well known and well regarded in the amateur electronics world.

I have my TS100 set up alongside a JBC setup that cost thousands and I would say there's little difference between their soldering performance, though the JBC's ergonomics are better. It's incredible what you can get in this price range nowadays.

Any of these will be so much better for electronics than the ToolPRO one that it would be unfair to even compare them.

This ToolPRO one is awful. I screwed up my face when I saw it and started to feel ill reading its documentation. It's not just bad for the price, it's dreadful even for $10. I would pay to not subject my electronics to this thing. There is no temperature control, it just dumps 430 (!!!) degrees onto anything it touches, not that it even knows that probably because I'm betting it's got a rubbish temperature sensor implementation. Absolute trash.

Just be aware they don't make the v1 any more so any you see on AliExpress (usually the blue and red) are clones (I don't think Pinecil has officially ever sold on there).
Also be wary of the ~$40 listings for the v2 that pop up on Amazon as they are always new seller shipped so no doubt you would never see your iron (the listings disappear pretty quick)

        Good post about clones here

As far as the v2 goes, I just got one recently and love it. It even connects to Home Assistant, though not sure why I need that yet.. guess I could automate a fume extractor or something when I start soldering :D

        • NGL, your Amazon linked one looks fine.. 😅

They're $38USD ($56AUD) delivered to Melbourne at the moment directly from the Pine64 website though.

          • +1

@WasBargain: Yep the ones for 60 odd that are shipped by Amazon are likely all fine, I got mine from there. They were slightly cheaper then but still a few dollars more than Pine64 direct, Next day delivery though and maybe easier for warranty. Passed the authenticity checker ok.

But every week seems there is a new scam seller that pops up on the listing, usually around $40.

            • @bamzero: Oh woah, didn't know but will keep an eye out. I haven't touched one in over 10 years so I can personally wait but good to know, I didn't realise they'd drop it that low! I'm probably going to order one directly with some of the nifty extra bits and cheaper spare parts just incase. The clear case replacement looks cool but I'll save that for when I need it, along with the extra tips and stuff. Thanks again.

Finirsi HS-01 is another great soldering iron.

    • Damn thats cheap! Nice to see options like that exxist. I got a TS80 a few years ago and love it.

    • I've heard many people rave on about the pinecil's. I'm keen as though after seeing your toolkit/pouch. I still want the Toolpro one though to add to the ecosystem but not willing to get it until it's atleast 40 - 50% off.. 😅

Edit: Is $38USD delivered a good price for the V2?

  • +1

Dammit I want this to go on proper clearance, like circa $30 like their other tools in the lineup have. It's the only one I don't have.

    • They usually only do that when it's been superseded.
I'd be happy if they did a skin only for $50 - I've got a few batteries and chargers from the clearance sets.

    • Same. If I hadn't just bought into the Milwaukee 12V system I probably would have bought this, but the Milwaukee system seems far better.

      • Would the milwaukee battery fit?

  • +1

Looks like exact copy of Milwaukee m12 soldering iron.

    • That's what i thought too
