Sheesh this thing dropping price line crazy, maybe sometimes too niche..

    • I think the lack of viewfinder really makes it a bit too niche. And that lens is very slow.

Surely you'd only buy this if your main use was video.

      • +1

Full Frame with no viewfinder? Only good for vloggers.

    • i still don't know who the target market is for this

      • Quick social media content creation

      • -1

The 20-60mm lens doesn't even state an aperture range.
And what do you even do with a 24mm f/8?
This is the most bizarre package I've seen lol!

        • Panasonic Lumix S 20-60mm f3.5-5.6, overall it is a good kit lens.

26mm F8 is fitted to street photography & video creation.

Cinematography lends itself to a wide range of looks and approaches. Think The Batman: Directed by Matt Reeves (practically broke lenses) or, Army of the Dead: Directed by Zack Snyder.

Both of which, lens selection played a big part in the overall style of the film.

Behind the Scenes of both, goes into great detail about the lenses used & lengths went to, to get a desired outcome for the films through lens selection.

And here i am still trying to find a nice 1" compact. Sadly theyre not much cheaper. I know tech got expensive, but I never expected compact cameras to be 75% of a full frame.

    What a crazy world.

    • +2

I mean.. if you want full frame you can get old legends like Nikon d600 for peanuts these days…

1 inch compact - I like rx100 6 - but I’m fairly sure all the older ones also had 1 inch sensor and have similar performance…

    • +2

I'm being serious but it's most likely demand being driven by tiktok and social media hyping up digital cameras again.

Look around for any camera thats compact and decent and it's impossible to buy. I got a good deal on a g7x from cash convertors but everywhere else is pretty bad.

Probably not a bad idea to buy them from japan and sell here.

      • +1

tiktok and social media hyping up digital cameras again.

I am so torn between not buying a fuji x100vi on pure principle of not agreeing with fuji's artificial limitation of stock to milk the insane hype….and seeing it this will be THE camera that finally scratches THE ITCH and is the one camera to rule them all (i bet it wont be though).

        • +1

I had an X100S and sold it during peak covid hype and I still regret it. The form factor is great.

          • +1

@Presence: I also had an x100s, sold it for what I paid… kinda miss it though the af was slow as hell and low light was poop lol.

          • @Presence: x100s one of my all time fav cameras. I used it to death :(

        • +3

That itch will never be scratched. It's a phantom itch!

        • Have you looked at the Ricoh GRI IIIx HDF?

Girlfriend seems to think it will be pretty good or atleast a cheaper x100vi dupe

          • +1

            @mailbox: Yes
Similarly also sold out with insane lead times (I think last i looked stock due end October)

I’d prob prefer the Ricoh tbh, though getting a bit to for jacket weather again…might need to go with cargo shorts

            • +2

@Jimothy Wongingtons: Got a GRIII HDF from CameraHouse, came within 2 days. Also saw the GRIIIx HDF in stock you need to check different stores though as the stores are all owned independently, I kept changing my "local" store on the website and cycled through a bunch of them, found one in stock, emailed them directly and they shipped it out the next day.

Also had all the Fuji x100 series from the very beginning, passed on the X100vi and went with Ricoh, don't regret it at all, the form factor on the Ricoh really does it for me. The Fujis were a bit awkward, smaller than my Canon R6 for sure but not small enough to fit in my pocket. Whereas the Ricoh I literally take out EVERYWHERE.
In saying that though, the autofocus isn't too great, it's definitely old technology, if they released an updated version I'd buy it in a heartbeat, but I doubt that'll be anytime soon since the HDF just came out not long ago.

              • +1

@Eriadnile: Interesting - I was checking out camera house website today but all the locals seem to just say ‘call individual store for availability’ … like bro it’s 2024 just tell me ffs

                the autofocus isn't too great,

That’s very sad and tbh will prob annoy the hell out of me…currently alternating between g9 Panasonic , and a7iii, the af is crazy

                • +2

@Jimothy Wongingtons: Yeah coming from those two, don't expect much from the Ricoh :D I got over it though, I put my Ricoh on auto mode and just enjoy the snaps I get from it (took a while to configure it all and get my picture recipe the way I wanted though).

If you're in NSW, I found the Castle Hill CameraHouse has the GRIIIx HDF in stock as of now. Just change the store to that location, go search for the camera and then click on "pick up" option, it'll say "low stock" rather than "contact individual store" then just flick it back to the delivery option and it'll show as "ships immediately".
I emailed the store directly first though to confirm, and they sent me a specific link to the camera and their store to ensure the online order goes to them and not a different store without stock.

                  • +2

@Eriadnile: Cheers checked again, the brisbane ones all out… haha! My credit card survives…. For today.

                • +2

@Jimothy Wongingtons: People just use it as a street cam and use the hyperfocal distances for the GR anyway, so don't fuss about the AF too much.

      • +3

I love the TikTok hype. I sold my old x100s for just shy of $1000 lol.

        • lol wild

        • lol what the crap…

I have one sitting in a drawer somewhere because it has a shutter issue, might be worth getting it repaired and selling it…

          • @freefall101: Sticky shutter? I had the issue develop within 2 weeks of getting mine, was the first batch to land in Australia - was covered under warranty but is a known issue..

            • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: yup, sadly mine didn't have the issue until 5 years after buying. Should have tried warranty but always figured I'd go fix it some day. Instead went to DSLR for a while.

Can't seem to find it though, might have gone to the recyclers. I remember trying to give it away at one point with no takers. Did find a G9X that I don't ever recall buying though lol (the x100s decided to crap out mid holiday, so presumably I got it then). Sadly that doesn't seem to have the same retro vibe.

      • I always thought tiktok was video; never expected them to influence stills cameras.

Sounds about right though if thats happened.

Trying to find something like a g7x mk3 for $1000; but so far no luck.

        The hunt continues!

        • +1

Not using it for tiktok, as in, influencers will make videos about how it’s the best best thing since sliced bread and keep the hype machine going

      • +1

I need to see these videos that hype up Fuji X100 etc. I don't understand how they get people so excited. If someone who doesn't know what they are doing picks up an X100V they are going to take shit photos.

        • +3

that applies to any camera though

        • Not much else comes close to the size/weight with lots of dials, an EVF, let alone an OVF. The fact it looks cool certainly helps its sales though.

The GR series has no OVF and barely any dials. The Q3 is more than double the price and bigger. There's a few Canon and Panasonics but they have slow lenses.

I really wish Canon would revive the Canonet series.

    • +2

I have a 6 year old Sony A6300 that has higher 2nd hand resale value than what I paid for it new…

Used to be able to get entry level APS-C DSLR or mirrorless for under $400

      • How much can one expect selling an A6300?

        • +1

Sold my A6000 at the start of the year for $600 if that helps..

          • @buyer-123: Wow thank you so much. I have an a6300 to sell off, helps a lot

    • Unfortunately smart phones mostly killed the 1" compact. For what they cost people weren't willing to pay.
Sony ZV-1 is about the only one still being made as the last RX100 while sold is several years old.

Micro 4/3 can probably be had for cheap, but not as compact.

      • +1

Yeah i bought a m43 new last week; a panasonic g880; sadly not my jam, and ill be returning it.

A little too bulky for not quite enough advantage

Gonma get an older eos m3 for 'planned photography' (being apsc) and a compact for daily….

The compact is the hard part, lol.

    • I want a compact full frame with a fixed lens, they don't really exist though, there's the one really old Sony one. Or at least more APS-C options other than Ricoh and Fuji.

      • I want a compact full frame with a fixed lens, they don't really exist though

        Leica Q, Q2, Q3.

        • Those are perfect but I'm not a millionaire :(

          • @bleeder: You don't need to be a millionaire. All you need is $7k or $8k
            That's $993,000 less than a million

            • +1

              @MrBillions: I need $1mil in assets before I feel I can justify spending $7K on a camera.

  • Does this compare with a Sony A7C?

    • +2

TL;DR – Still image quality wise, practically they are the same, and S9 makes more fun with their LUTs/filters.

They share the same image sensor, but S9 only supports up to 12bit in photos, which is fine in most cases. If you’re doing some extensive shadow pushing/adjusting in post-editing (e.g., astrophotography) you will see the difference, albeit I’d say it’s still small.

A7c isn’t a camera with fun, but at its time when released it was unbeatable for its size.

      • +4

Those LUTs are why this camera is doing so well. Photography purists (including the big review sites) have been absolutely sh177ing on the s9, but Panasonic is just trying to tap the content creator market - including those who don't have hours to spare for post production - to keep the declining digital camera industry alive.

They've also made an actually decent and fast phone app. Purists all claim it doesn't take long to use current apps but they are still far more cumbersome than posting your phone's native images and videos, which is another issue said reviewers underrate.

I have the a7C and while I am happy with it, I can see the appeal of the s9. Yes, it doesn't yet have much lens selection but it's enough for the target market - simple zoom, a nifty fifty, with good image quality, body stabilisation and decent autofocus

        • +1

          The LUMIX S 18mm F1.8, 24mm F1.8, 35mm F1.8, 50mm F1.8, 85mm F1.8 line of lenses fit well with the essence of the this S9 camera.

Good value, no fuss, interchangeable, light & compact, with the same size & weight for easy gimbal use.

          • @stickymoo: I personally prefer the Sigma i-series of lenses. The Lumix S line is too massive + plasticky build.

i-series on the other hand- body and hood made of metal, tactile, has an aperture ring and character + unique rendering (some of them anyway).

          • +1

            @stickymoo: You are right.

Comparing those you've mentioned to their lightest FE mount equivalents (the audience for this camera would be considering the a7c series), the lenses are very similar in heft.

            • Lumix 24mm f1.8 is 310g vs 230g Samyang
            • Lumix 35mm f1.8 is 295g vs 210g Samyang
            • Lumix 50mm f1.8 is 300g vs 281g Sony's 55mm f1.8 Zeiss
            • Lumix 85mm f1.8 is 355g vs Sony's 85mm at 371g
            • Lumix 70-200 f4 985g vs Sony's 840g

The main disadvantage is price - other than the nifty 50mm equivalents, Sony has noticeably cheaper (esp Samyang) equivalents eg at 24mm (Samyang is half the price), 35mm (again, Samyang cheaper by a few hundred) and 85mm (even Sony's is cheaper). I'll be interested to see if Panny can get any third parties to produce cheaper alternatives.

Still, if you're not carrying a ton of lenses, the Lumix's interface, LUTs and app experience would be far more appealing to many non-purists/nerds.

            • @y2k: other than the Zony 55mm, i believe all the listed lens are optically inferior to the Lumix S offerings. they're optimised for video (little focus breathing), have similar physical footprint between all the primes (even the 100mm macro) and are WR.

As mentioned in my previous reply, i personally prefer the i-series of lenses as they're more delicate and tactile.

FYI Samyang is already part of the L-mount alliance so I'm expecting these lenses to be available in Leica L-Mount.

        • +2

Photography purists (including the big review sites) have been absolutely sh177ing on the s9, but Panasonic is just trying to tap the content creator market - including those who don't have hours to spare for post production - to keep the declining digital camera industry alive.

As an ex-professional photographer, I've genuinely not met any group of people who are consistently more wrong and unaware of how wrong they are than internet "camera nerds" (i.e. the "purists" as you call them).

I still recall every wave of innovation and technology being rejected by the "camera nerds" / "purists" until it becomes undeniable - it happened with autofocus, then again with digital cameras, then again with the shift to mirrorless cameras, and now the shift towards a more portable and usable form factor. At every turn, it's the old trope of "no real photographer would ever want to use XYZ", only to see "real photographers" end up using XYZ in the mainstream.

  • Sick and tired if grainy smartphone photos. What to buy?

    • +3

      Ricoh GRIII

      • +5

I cannot believe ricoh didnt push for a new model - and instead just did the equivalent of giving Malibu Stacy a new hat.

        • (Don’t get me wrong i absolutely still want one, the x hdf version though)

          • @Jimothy Wongingtons: I'd settle for iii x without hdf, I think the results just look weird?

            • @shabaka: Hdf filter can be turned off. But that’s fair if you don’t use it and prefer nd (which can be handy too!)

              • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: I'd want to get one to take shots of the cocktails in the bars, not sure if HDF would add spark in these situations or not

                • @shabaka: From the videos I would say yes… though I mean I wonder if I’d get same effect if I just slap a pro mist filter on (though it would prob have the flare/reflection when light bounced off the filter…)

                • +2

@shabaka: I have the Ricoh iiix, the lowlight performance is garbo, anything above 3200 is unusable. IBIS is pretty good, you can do shots at 1/5s.

Good thing about the HDF is that you can disable it. IMO, it's more useful than the NDF which the HDF replaces.

it does film sim better than my Fuji bodies too (X-Trans II and X-Trans III). very unique rendering.

                  • +2

@dukeGR4: sounds fantastic. I had Fuji for a year and wasn't super impressed. but that was x-t3 no ibis and I do quite a bit in low light

keen to give iiix a go

                  • @dukeGR4:

                    1/5

That’s actually pretty damn good considering the small package

        • i think it's very hard to improve upon the GR3 and they've made it clear they're not going to half-arse the update.

my wishlist for the GR is : Better AF, Better low-light performance, and WR.

          • @dukeGR4: I’d prob forgive if they left off WR. I baby all my weather sealed stuff anyway.

Me: oh… looks like light drizzle, photography day cancelled!

            • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: I shot my X-Pro 2 in the rain once for the entire day, woke up next day the viewfinder had this fog turned around to have a look - damn actual water condensation….

moral of the story - don't test it lol, best if you treat "WR" as a marketing.

another thing about the GR, the lens mechanism tends to suck in dust when they extend/retract. so having WR could be handy for that.

            • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: They need to give it the Pentax WR treatment. Then you can shower with it.

    • The biggest factor is the size and if you want removable lenses and if not, if you'd be happy with a prime lens. Then a viewfinder limits your choices even more.

I'd trawl some Fuji buy and sell groups. You can easily resell anything if you don't like it.

      • A7Cii all the way. I just don't see any benefits this brings over A7Cii apart from perhaps being $400 cheaper with a lot of disadvantages?

        • It's $400 cheaper PLUS a zoom lens and a pancake lens.

  • What were they thinking, A FF camera w/o a viewfinder.

    • Everything about it is for video. Even the slow lens is ideal for video.

  • Objectively funny

  • I think these videos from Ewen Bell do a pretty good job of highlighting the potential of the camera (and that the trade offs may not be that bad)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIxdZ38FcnM

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWscy0FQZl0

  • What's this kit comparable to in the Nikon or Canon world?

    • Canon's R8 with kit lens is around the same price range…

      • Note: lack of IBIS with the R8 which the S9 has.

  • +1

Sigma 35mm F2 or 50mm F2 would pair well with this camera :)

  • Bring back the $300 Sony DSLR!
