Still overpriced lol. Doubt Qantas cares that they're still getting $4000+ from people so an easy PR move to honour it.

    • +2

$4000 is overpriced for 28+ hours in a first class flat bed?

      • +5

They downgraded it to business class. Still a decent deal but Qantas ain't losing money on these tickets (unless you count the possibility they could have been sold at full price).

        • Oh fair enough, different story then

It's quite common for 'journalists' to trawl popular forums, reddit, social platforms etc to obtain content and post about it.

And then, people take their posts and post it back into those platforms..

If you had any writing talent at all, you wouldn't work as a journalist. You'd be an author, a policy analyst, a lawyer, whatever. Journos are the lowest tier of scribes. Especially the ones who are forced to write listicles based on social media content.

I have seen them on local facebook groups - "Hi, I'm xxx from channel x. Would love to hear from anyone involved in this terrible/horrible/wonderful event".

Tell them to put some clothes on

  • Feel good story of the week

      Its Business Class though?

Check out the cost of First! The link above said $19k for a return SYD-LAX. You’d really have to have a different relationship to money as we do to pay that. Like, shame they changed $50 notes to plastic because I used to enjoy wiping my arse with them before flushing them.

      • +3

I do wonder how many individuals actually pay that and not businesses etc.

I guess if you have a networth in the tens of millions, something like this would be equivalent of a few hundred bucks.

Having said that, most of the rich people I know, even ones worth more than that, fly economy or premium at most. Frugal mindset.

        • +2

From what I understand first class Is more famous people who don’t want to be hassled, as they’re generally unseen by everyone else on the flight.

That and the “rich but not rich enough to own a jet” type.

I know businesses send their exec teams like that too, to be rested on arrival. The several million a year salary types. I did work at a company that sent regular staff first class, policy died off though once they realised how much they were spending on it.

crazy how some places have wildly different policies.

Even the C-suite execs at my company only go premium economy at a maximum. And they are the several million a year type.

          • +1

            @freefall101: True.

I also thought there would be people who do it for a once-in-a-lifetime thing. Like in retirement. Maybe even some people who are terminally ill and wanna just do something they never experienced.

I’d like to go first class once and check out the others flying in it. Plus that cool bar thing they have on Emirates first. Stand by the bar and chat with some semi famous actor or something.

            • +1

@Corgsta: The bar on the Emirates A380 is in business class, but they do allow first class passengers in lol.

            • @Corgsta: I have been upgraded to the first class. It is ok for leg room, bubbly before take off etc, but not for the price.

this is literally double what I paid for myself and 3 kids to fly to LA return 5 years ago.

"this is literally 10 times what I paid. Granted I bought an MG3 and not a Ferrari"

      • Do you need a ferrari to go to the supermarket?

        This is ozbargain.

Which some people see as (A) a place to score bargains i.e. the cheapest price to get the desired result.

Others see at as (B) a place to get the cheapest price.

First class at ~$5000 is (B).

        My perspective is (A)

It’s up on the Guardian too. On the live blog anyway.
    https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/live/2024/aug/26/…

I like the bit about “gesture of good will”. Is it? I haven’t looked how much a business class flight is.

Wonder how much in points->dollars converted it is to buy a economy flight then upgrade to business with points on that leg. Qantas don’t care about the points, they care about the value of the points.

      • It’s what?

  • +4

First class around $13k each way
Business class at least $8k return, so I guess people might be happy.

In all honesty if people have points and are looking at flying solo and have flexible dates it is worth looking at using points for First Class rather than Business. The points aren’t that much more expensive.

    • Got any idea how many points? I’ve got a fair few points accrued. Seems best to use for flights and upgrades than gift cards.

      • +2

Currently on Qantas you can get First class Melbourne to Paris on Emirates one way is 227,500 points + $1,827 on 6th of February.

Check QF will move your flight at the last minute or push you on their codeshare flight to maximise their yield. They will refund you on their credit account if you don't accept their change.

This is a normal tactic from QF.

It happened with me on SQ, when I was doing my online check-in they moved my flight to the first flight around 8 am instead of 11 am and overnight stop of 14 hours in Singapore instead for 2 hours transit earlier, and they washed off their hands stating that due to load they have moved error flights. Either take it or leave it.
