One of the better tasting frozen pies? Are you kidding me? These things are better than many bakeries, even!

    • +14

you must go to low quality bakeries imo

      • +3

We have an excellent bakery…unfortunately too good (often sell out).

Will these be basically pure vomit compared to a decent pie? $9.50 suggests decent quality..but are they…really?

OzB rave about the Dr Oekteker Pizza…but the box is better eating than the pizza!

        • +6

These are okay for the reduced price. Definitely not worth the original price. If you live near an excellent bakery, don't bother with these, I'd rather eat fresh bakery pies less often. Quality over quantity with pies.

I agree about Dr Oekteker, it's putrid. These are better than that, but not massively.

Get the ones that have slow cooked pulled beef. Those are the best. The pepper one is also good. :) As for frozen. They are the best of the bunch. They are way better then the pies you get from take aways and service stations. Aussie pie bakeries that make them in house do taste better. Vietnamese bakeries ara a hit and miss for pies. Some are better then these some are not.

          • @vid_ghost: Until you find a lump of inedible cartilage that takes up 1/3 of the filling. Total killjoy. Only happened once though.

Same price last week at Coles. Already stocked up :)

    • +1

We bought 6 packs last week and they're all gone! I found that the chicken is not as good as it used to be. How do people usually cook this?

2 pies, 7 minutes in the microwave, let sit in the microwave for atleast another 7 minutes, comes out pretty crispy and good

        • +5

          Crispy from the microwave? Amazing.

          • +1

@smartazz104: Not if you have a Breville QT with crisping, or similar.

        • +3

ewwww get yourself an air fryer. mikers just to take the edge off being frozen - air fryer to actually crisp up.

        • The meat gets rock hard inside on the edges yuck. You can use the oven for these 45 mins at 160 or microwave them for 1 minute and oven them for 30 mins.

      • +5

I do 7 minutes in a 1000W microwave at 50% power, then 5 minutes in an airfryer at 180°C.

        • +2

I do 180°C in airfryer for 25-30 minutes from frozen

        • +2

3.30 in microwave on high, then 4 minutes in airfryer at 220, +the one minute airfryer cool down.

      • +2

I was going to comment that the chicken ones I've had recently have been kinda… Bland and very saucy.

What I do is microwave 2 min, surgically remove the top with a butter knife, put cheese (any) on the filling, microwave 1 more minute then airfryer for 2 mins.

      • 2 mins in microwave, 5 mins in airfyer

    • My local Coles has massively reduced the range of Herbert Adams in stock which is quite disappointng.

Does anyone else think that Herbert Adams make the Aldi premium pie two packs (the slow cooked beef ones at least)?

    • +5

I thought they were identical until I did a side-by-side tasting. The Aldi ones are very close but not quite as good (but the diff is tiny). Could easily be the same factory with slightly different inputs.

      • +6

It’s possible - Herbert Adams are made in the largest pie factory in the world where Patties, Four N Twenty, Nannas and Boscastle are also made

        • +5

So you are saying if I find this factory and sabotage its operations, I would be able to cause a worldwide pie outage?

          • +1

@CptnObvious: It’s 30 minutes from my house, on the same road aha

          • -2

@CptnObvious: Why would you want to do that?

There was a major impact on the ice cream market with the Northern NSW floods when one ice cream factory was flooded. Prices and range never recovered. Some of the gourmet supermarket varieties never returned and smaller, more expensive not as good ones replaced them.

          • @CptnObvious: Maybe a temporary local shortage, or did you mean outrage?

  • These had extra $15 off $50 last week at Coles. Stocked up cuz their a family fav.

  • Kind of off topic Does anyone remember these pies? Why were they removed from freezer shelves. I don't have a IGA anywhere near me to check for stock.

Edit: Even after checking for stock online in-store I get this message "Sorry! It looks like this product is no longer available"

    • Probably something to do with them changing owners and their quality going to shit, leading to no one buying them and thus them discontinuing to stock?

I haven't tried their potato pies which might still be decent but the others just fizzled out.

    • i used to love balfours. i thought they had one of the best gravies
