VDSL as in copper??
Fibre and copper.
VDSL (Very-High Bitrate Digital Subscriber Line) is delivered over a Fibre to the Node network in the ACT. Fibre optic cable connects to nodes and from there, short lengths of dedicated copper cables connect to a VDSL2 wall socket in your premises.
Have they turned on 500Mbps and is it available throughout the iiNet/transact VDSL2 network?
It's G.fast, Vision Network has enabled it.
Woooooot!! Have been reading a lot of the really favourable feedback on the Whirlpool pages (ppl connecting to Infinite over the past couple of months). I think best speed i saw was ~1150, just blazing fast.
If it's anything like the G.Fast that I receive from TPG, I sync at 1100/120, but they shape it to 500/120
@Grannular: These were reported data rates. Some of those folks are very dedicated to measuring their speed & latency. Just had another look at the WP page and some folks reporting 1.4Gbps line sync >_<
@xwx: G.fast works wonders when the line is clean and free from interference. Too bad majority of Aussie Copper is laddied with poor quality, poor maintenance, thanks Telstra and Ziggy!!!
Otherwise NBN would deplpiy G.fast already

Any idea if you would have to cancel then come back for existing customers?
Try call and asking if you can get it
You can call and they will update the plan with a new contract for you. Just did a few days ago
Awesome, TY. Did you still get the introductory price for the first 12 months?
Yes they said nothing, and they signed me for another 12months plan.
@Skilly: Can confirm myself now as well, actually went ahead yesterday and was all good.
Should be called G.fast
Hmm so will this actually get me better speeds then my NBN FTTN? Currently i cant get over 50Mb down, 16MB up with a 18ms ping. Obviously lower during peak hours also.
IINET says i can get Ultra VDSL2 Broadband so is it actually better? interestingly enough it also says i can get the 5G Home broadband which Optus etc says isnt available at my address. Had been wanting to try that also to try improve things until FTTP finally comes.
Switch to this plan, it will be better and cheaper
Significantly faster with this. Ditch NBN
I'm on the transact network VDSL2 through iiNet at the moment. I haven't switched to this new G Fast option yet, but I've been getting 118mbps down and 38mbps up for some time now just on VDSL2 reliably and I've been paying $79.99 a month. And G Fast is supposed to be a lot faster again, so based on what you're getting on NBN it seems like you should switch. Make sure you're within the transact network area though
FTTN, can do 500?
Gfast tech
I've seen people reporting speeds up to ~1150mbps DL and +100mpbs UL on the whirlpool pages (when Infinite Networks released plans on the former 'TransACT network' now operated as Vision Network). This is on a relatively modern FTTN 'copper-to-customer' network with generally short domestic loops to a node, and isn't the general NBN fttn (adopted from Telstra et al) that you'll find across much of Aus.
Just subscribed for iiNet around 20 days before and could not find this plan that time :(
Call them and ask to move to this plan. Assuming of course you're not talking about NBN
I'll give them a call. I hope they will transfer the benefit (discount ) as well. from toolbox its not transferring
response from sales line, No your discount won't be transferred. However we have new mobile plans and can send you details
just signed up.
hopefully this would be better than tha 40mbps i am getting from Aussie Broadband.
Can confirm that this is amazing for those of us in areas of Canberra still waiting for FTTP. Had mine installed today (2 days after ordering) and i have gone from max 50MB down 16MB up with 18m/s ping FTTN to 800mb 45 down 5m/s ping!! Crazy!
When the tech tested with his handheld unit direct to the Gfast box he got 1.3gb. My tests are wifi to the IINET Router.
At the moment i only seem to be able to get it to work with the IINET router. If i plug it into the WAN of my ASUS XT8 mesh it doesnt seem to work. Hopefully i get that working down the track for better coverage.
AFAIK you still require modem hardware on g.fast, it's just a different protocol. You could probably perform the PPPoE from your xt8 via bridge in the modem; or just leave the PPPoE to be performed on the modem and run your internal network from the xt8 (modem lan to xt8 wan or lan port as you prefer). [excuse my jibberish ~ I've currently got an nbn fttn modem and TransACT fttn modem doing their own pppoe wan dhcp connected to an DLink dual-wan aggregator, and then run a few VLANs from my fav routers]. Actually re-reading your comment I'm not sure if you were trying to connect and pppoe directly from the xt8 to the wall socket (won't work at all), or having trouble getting internal network running on net from xt8 via the supplied modem (needs some config).
Thanks for that. You were right, i assumed the Gfast box (zyxel) they installed was the modem and the Tp-link VX420 was just a Router to connect to, but it is the modem as well.
To turn the Tp-link to bridge mode is a bit of a process and its hard to tell if its working well doing it that way. With the instructions i found i can get the XT8's up and running but i get about 380mb down on those. Keeping the wifi on the TP-link i get 480mb directly connected. I have just ordered a bunch of Cat6 cables to see if that improves things. Still 6-8x the speed i had before doing this so although some tinkering will be needed to get more out of it i'm still happy.
Thanks for the update. Did they install both a Zyxel modem and a TP-Link router, or is it a new all-in-one box?
They installed both but i assumed the Zyxel is a modem but i'm not really sure what it does. The wall socket goes straight from the wall to the zyxel then to the WAN of the TP-link router which has the PPOE setup. IINET also had to get me to connect the TP-Link to get the service connected even when the Zyxel was conneted.
The Zyxel has two LAN ports. I had the technician install a RJ45 in another media room from the service in. He did this by running a dual RJ45 with the second outlet going to the other room. This new line wouldnt work with a connection to the Zyxel Lan port. It only started working with a line to the TP-link LAN port.
Zyxel is the network termination device for the service provision infrastructure: similar to but not same as the wall-boxes installed by nbn fttp. Meet 1st layer of rabbit hole with some folks who've been trialling or running on the new g.fast plans (mostly via Infinite but underlying network tech is same as iinet - provided via Vision Networks).
Your speed issues may be cabling but probably more likely due to multi dhcp or double NAT or routing conflicts across your set of new & old network devices.
This guide from a time long, long ago; in a galaxy far far away may help you find the path to resolve some of those config issues.
You will get better upload speeds if you don't use the supplied TP-Link router. For some reason, iiNet cap it at 40ish download speeds. You will probably get 100mbps if you use a different router.
Interesting. I did have the Telstra technicolour gateway for my nbn. I wonder if that will give better speeds. Although I am guessing I will need to set it up rather than plug and play like it was with the nbn.
It's pretty simple to setup other routers. Follow the configuration in https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/vision-network-gfast
@matt_will_fix_it: Legend! Thanks for that
I attempted to get this installed in Farrer (500mbs/25mbs - Ultra), but my line is about 360 meters away from the node, which is too far. The distance needs to be around less than 310 meters.
Yeah g.fast falls off a cliff if your copper is poor and/or long and/or has interference tec….
I wish I could access this network. So frustrating that they are not expanding it because of the nbn.
It's barely used, stable and ridiculously fast.
