    Is this direct flight?

    • +5

      All flights are via SIngapore

    • Generally no. Always via SIN.

    • +3

      Name checks out

Daughter went Jetstar recently. Best their group could do was about 10 hours between flights at Narita. Too short to go to town, too long to avoid getting bored and wasted. On Singapore airlines some flights are only a hour or so wait at Singapore.
And of course, Singapore airlines vs Jetstar you would take Singapore every time.
Unless you are a bunch of girl students who know better. That’ll teach em.

      • Kids have fun together as long as they are sitting with mates 😂. Their body is also so young and well that Jetstar and Singapore airline seats feel the same to them.

They could really justify Jetstar for a measly $100 saving lol.

    • Why fly 8 hours from East Coast to Singapore then another 7 hours to Japan when you can fly direct to Japan in 8 hours? Or from East Coast to Taiwan/HK then onward to Japan saving several hours?

      • +1

There are no direct flights from Australia to Fukuoka.

Connection times through TPE and HKG are not as short as SIN.

        This is good deal.

        • Yep, and breaking up the journey in Changi is preferable to either alternative, let alone the hassle of landing in Narita, Haneda, or KIX and transiting.

          • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: You seriously think that transiting in KIX would be worse than flying an additional, what, 7 hours? I mean you could the train to Fukuoka might take you 4 hours from KIX?

I've done the Singapore to Japan and it was a huge mistake.

  • +1

No brainer especially for hopping across to South Korea 👍🎉

    • +1

The ferries to Busan are a good option, only an hour or two trip.

      • +17

Ferries are always a better option than trains to avoid the undead.

        • +1

You can’t unsee it once you’ve seen the movie haha

        • Undead trains or Ferries that leak?

          Tough choice.

      • If they are still running, I had my ferry booking from Busan to Fukuoka cancelled as they have suspended operations, as the management had decide not to infom the Authorities of how much water it takes on, and move the sensor so it wouldn't trigger the alarm (https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2024/08/14/japan/jr-kyushu…)

    • +1

for hopping across to South Korea…
Recent (expired) Deal on SK direct flights from Brisbane was $495 return carry on, plus baggage.
      Currently from $635 Oct-Nov.

Easier than 2 international flights each way + 2 ferries, stopover time & potential 6 customs issues.

      • For Adelaidians, Singapore airlines is a priority as they are 1 of a few that fly direct out of ADL to asia (Malaysian is another).

This is a great price to land in Japan, cough up for the new extortionate JR Pass, bum around and then transit to SK. Do the same, ferry back and out. Or vv.

Busan alone is worth the hop and if Seoul is a must, it's a quick trip on the KTX (which is so much less hassle than internal flights or the cheap flights between Japan and SK which have stuff all luggage allowance 😐

        • Travelled around SK a few times, & over a year in Japan over many trips.
Personally prefer Japan. People are more welcoming & help show me around.

Spent time in Kyushu on a few trips. Including week long ferry ride from Naha to Kagoshima, staying in my tent on tiny sand fringed tropical islands

Really love Kyushu & islands to the South. Soaking in an Onsen beside the volcano at Kagoshima is spectacular. So is climbing volcanic Mt Aso.

Many teaching English in SK ferry to Fukuoka to get renew Visa. Too many Foreigners there for me. Didn't stay long.

My friend was the Vice Consul for SK in Sydney. So visited when she returned to Seoul.
My cheap hostel was surprised on my arrival, to receive a call by a Govt official - to make sure I was being looked after😄

Flew cheaply from Seoul for a week on Jeju Island (SK). Then hopped over to Busan. Didn't check accommodation - all booked out for the largest Asian film festival.
Called a place I'd stayed before & they found room with international film critics! Free film festival tickets! Got to meet Directors & actors as an 'international film critic'! Nice when things work out better than expected!

Living in Brisbane, direct cheap flight to Seoul is great. Even if it's Jetstar. Traveled on Jetstar to Japan many times for $400 return.
For over a decade before COVID, travelled carry-on (sometimes with a tent) to allow as much flexibility as possible, & keep costs down to travel longer & further.

        • For Adelaidians who prefer not to fly essentially an entire extra day, Singapore airlines is probably not a priority.

  • +2

OP - first time going to Japan, but trying to do on budget as I have family of 5. Have to go on school holidays due to wife's work. What's the likelihood of a deal coming up in autumn school holidays for 2025 (14 April to 26 April)?

    • Peak spring sakura season. There may be some very close to the date, if this year was representative.

    • +2

Why is this comment getting downvoted?

      • +1

Because some ppl who can’t be bothered to read your comment assume you are asking for a specific deal on specific dates.

      • +4

Probably because expecting bargain flights during peak travel seasons (school holidays) is unrealistic.

      • Every post asks for deals during school holidays and every single school holidays flights are not cheap because… school holidays!

    • +8

I find airlines typically excludes / blocks out school holiday period on their sale.

    • +2

Not sure why your comment is being downvoted.

There was a Jetstar sale few days back which had flight tickets for around $500 during cherry blossom. Of course there is no luggage etc but you can anyways take luggage for 2 people out of 5 and try to manage if on budget.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15573231/redir

    • there was deal last week or so - see if you can find the deal.

    • +1

I did this (fairly) budget with a family of four and we had an excellent time. The time zone in Japan is like one hour difference, the yen is like 100 to $1 so it's easy to convert prices, and they drive on the left hand side of the road if you're going to hire a car (need international licence which is easy, no test required).

Check this vlog out from a family who visit Japan often with children, they have great budget friendly tips:

      https://youtube.com/@hangrybynature?feature=shared

    • +2

Looks like you missed out on recent Jetstar sale which had a couple of days to Osaka during April holidays (though return was on school days). Still can't really complain for $1,000 return from Cairns direct flight for whole family (2 adults + 2 kids). My advise is that keep an eye out of all the deals, even though airlines generally exclude/ blackout school holidays, every once in a while they don't get all that lined up so a date or two get slipped out. I've been lucky like that a couple of times even with budget airlines like Jetstar. Most of those times we had to sacrifice a few days either before school holiday starts or after holiday ends so you just have to be a little flexible in order to grab a deal.

    • +1

Feel your pain. Assuming wife is a teacher, might be worthwhile taking a week off prior to get out before blackout periods.

Note that after is total 💩 Golden Week starts April 29 in 2025 and you want to avoid that like the plague.

      • Yes correct.

And thanks for the tip on Golden Week - I had never heard of it.

        • Can I say, as a teacher, I went to Japan and travelled down through asia last November/December/January. Unless the blossoms are a must, winter is an awesome time to go and schools are much more flexible about leave (although possibly too late now given T3).

Kyoto was still in full autumn 🍂 leaves at the beginning of December and the weather was cool but no rain. Mt Fuji was also very visible each time we zipped past.

I think winter in Tokyo is underrated tbh. Christmas season there is fantastic.

          • +1

@Benoffie: Thanks for the tip. We're not locked in yet on a specific time and so christmas school holidays 2024 are still a chance.

Return trip to Japan for less than the price of a PS5. Still can't afford, and nobody to go with :(

    • +20

      Go solo.

    • +6

      I second McSquintus, go solo.

Especially a place like Japan where lots of places cater to solo travelers/business people, plus traveling solo will be easier and likely more fun.

    • +4

I am very hesitant to travel solo anywhere too, just don't like the way the world is now and don't think I would enjoy it. But Japan is different, it's the ideal place for a solo traveller and you will never feel lonely or bored. Easy to get around, friendly and helpful locals and plenty of things to keep you occupied.

    • Go solo. Super safe, nothing is wrapped up in couples stuff. I went with teenager and just bummed around mysef half the time. It was very enjoyable.

  • +5

Highly recommend Fukuoka as an entry point. Far fewer tourists, so much cool stuff in the vicinity.

    • +5

Japan is the best first solo destination imo.

      • +2

Tokyo can be overwhelming first up. Fukuoka is so easy to navigate as a city, and Kyushu has so much stuff to see and do nearby.

        • What's the nearest "family" snow field to Fukuoka?

          • +2

@tunzafun001: I think too far south for any snows?

          • @tunzafun001: Fly to Sapporo for that.

            • @Meconium: Okee dokes.. cheers.

              • +1

@tunzafun001: Yeah, not a snow place. Much more about hot springs, volcanos, forests, food, culture.

                • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: Hakuba the best snow place for : Dad - Advanced Snowboard, Mum - Blue level ski's, 4yr old - never seen snow.
Prefer quiet places, nice food. I guess being a first trip, easy access to learn the ropes of getting around. Cheers.

      • +1

I got back 2 months ago travelling there solo for 3 weeks and find it better than travelling in groups. When you're with others you have to cater for their annoying toilet breaks, eating at places you'd rather not and going to places that might not interest you. Travelling solo you do what you want when you want and can cover lots more places.

    • +1

Yes daughter just spent time there on an engineering scholarship.
Got to spend time in a nuclear power station, a hydrogen production facility, Toyota, a robotics lab, etc.
      lot of cultural events too.
Mid summer so it rained a lot.

Some good flight options to FUK

  • Great city, lived there for a few years when I was younger. Bloody miserable in Feb/mar though.

    • Terrible weather?

    • Bahaha didn't even need to know you live in Queensland to know you live in Queensland if you think Feb/Mar is miserable. Then I clicked your profile and what do you know Queensland.

Fukuoka snows only a few CMs for a few days, that's about it, which is nothing.

  • +1

    Fukuoka in an awesome city.

    • Fukuoka/Hakata has fantastic food choices and is a destination on its own. Also worth hiking at Mt Aso vulcano, visiting Kumamoto (amazing horse sashimi) and Beppu hot springs, while in Kyushu island.

      • Laughed so much, feeding a Hippo at Beppu Hells (hot springs). It's Japan's first tourist attraction.
        Volcanic Aso-san is wonderful.
Soak in Onsens at quaint Onsen Towns.
Ate smoked horse meat with locals when hiking to 1200 yr old tree on Yakushima, a boat ride South of Kagoshima - another amazing spot with a spectacular volcano on the bay.

  • +2

SQ is excellent, Fukuoka is excellent. Nice deal.

  • —> Note: You can book directly with the airline on singaporeair.com through the links posted here

    How does this work?

    • I think it’s missing an ‘OR’

      • Couldn't get the same prices on the Singapore Air website though … Close but not as good, but I'm also not willing to go through the likes of aunt Betty etc

        • That’s right. You often can get cheaper via third party sellers.

OP isn’t claiming you can get as cheap on the airlines own website. Often you can.

  • Thank you! I found that from SYD to HK only costs 615aud during those periods!

  • We are planning a trip to Japan(Tokyo) via Hong Kong next year. Have done some basic research and it seems Cathay is out best option as it flies via Hong Kong so no extra cost. This will be our first trip overseas with the kids and will be a big expense for us. Trying to work out best time of year to go. We are somewhat restricted as our eldest is doing year 12 next year, so most likely looking at after exams in Nov. Is that a good time of the year to visit both HK and Tokyo? We were in HK for our Honeymoon around early Nov before we had kids but cant remember what the weather was like since it was so long ago. Any advice appreciated.

  • Similar pricing flying into Osaka via SQ website. Osaka or Fukuoka will be better to fly into?

    • I'm wondering the same. Looking for first trip to Japan with my wife and 18 yo son. Thinking about 10 days, maybe half in Osaka half in Kyoto, and figure out day trips from there, or better just to stay in Osaka and do it all from there?

  • Thanks OP. Booked a trip to fly into Fukuoka then travel my way up and fly out from Haneda in 2 weeks for just under a hundred$ extra. Saves the hassle travelling back down south to Fukuoka at the end.

  • -3

Has anybody noticed a downgrade in the quality of in-flight services from SQ recently? I travel back to India and they serve fish in Italian sauce as Indian non-veg meal, with pasta salad. On another flight meal was finished before it reached my seat and I was asked to eat a normal veg meal instead of a chicken meal. Since my meal had small Indian sweets, they refused to serve ice cream.

They have reduced their baggage allowance to 25kg instead of 30 kg and charge for seat reservation and also increase their fares.

  • Any idea when this deal ends ? Till sold out I guess

  • Just be aware, Fukuoka International is one of the worst airports for getting through immigration, after flying in from Seoul a couple of days ago. The upside is I didn't have to wait for bags, as they were already out by the time I got through.

    • Yeah it does form long lines, but in my experience they move quickly, and once you're through, super fast and cheap to get into town with the city bus.
