Dropped lower than a WiFi signal in the vicinity of one of these

….. after 6 covid vaccine boosters

          • @easternculture: Don't know why you're getting negged. Getting the COVID vaccines boost the 5G reception XD

    • +1

I thought I was the only one, why does this happen?

      • +1

Magnetrons produce microwaves at 2.45ghz. Guessing as they get on, get bounced off, they may interfere with 2.4ghz wifi setups. Amazing that they dont stuff up all wifi.

  • +6

mine died within 2 1/2 years (and not heavily used)…never again will I buy a LG microwave

    • +15

Mine is 8 years old and still looks like new. We use it every day.

      • +7

Agree. I've got the 42L version. Best microwave I've ever owned.

    • +2

Same here, I think these are disposable microwave oven. It stopped working after 2 years and LG doesn’t want to do anything about it.

      • +1

Mine too. The sticker about a 10 year warranty is a bit of a red herring. It's a warranty on the inverter, not carriage, diagnosis or labour.

Ours too died way before it should.

Single worst feature on this microwave (and many others these days) - you can't (easily) disable the f-ing beep at the end of the cook.

        • +8

It's easy if you know the secret button combination. On my 25L Neochef it was holding 'Clear' and 'Keep Warm' for 5s until the screen said 'Off'. That mutes it until your next power outage.

    • -1

Keep the little square on the side clean. Give it plenty of air flow.

      • +1

it can be replaced with a Temu replacement for about $2-3

    • +1

Mine died two days ago and it was an LG too…

    • +1

Same here. Sucks because when it worked it was pretty good, and loved the interface, mine was a slightly different model (25L with quick controls on the door).
Bought a 40L Samsung to replace it because I didn't want another 2-3year microwave. The one before my LG lasted like 15 years.

    • I had a Panasonic one (died within a year, under warranty) then LG and this thing refuses to die. Around 9 years now.
I want to change it as design is not matching our kitchen anymore. But it just does not die.

    • +1

I just threw our 3 year old one in the bin. Moderate usage then just flat out died. Won't buy another LG. Hope our LG fridge lasts longer.

  • +5

Neochef are notorious for failing the magnetron. Avoid

    • +3

Isn't the magnetron the part with the 10 year warranty?
I'm not saying I disagree with you, my LG NeoChef microwave also died around two years after I bought it.

      • I am not sure how long the warranty was for. I couldn't claim the warranty as I had lost the receipt.

        • 2 year warranty, 10 years on inverter or something?

      • +8

Yes the part is warranted for 10 years in their advertising but it’s a total scam as the cost to do the repair it is not included and costs more than buying new microwave. Very scammy. Went through 3 of these and ended up getting full refund on a 3 year old model after quoting ACL at Harvey Norman.

Went with a Panasonic for my new one.

        • Damn, that's shame. My current microwave is an LG NeoChef.
Will keep what you said in mind for my next microwave - which may not be too long from now :')

        • That's concerning. We went with LG specifically because there is a 10 year warranty on the magnetron.. Fingers crossed it lives.

          • -1

@PriceSensitive: Magnetron will last forever (as there are no moving parts) if you keep the microwave clean (especially the wave guide if you have one), give it air flow for cooling and don't try and heat dry objects.

        • I had a dishwasher with 10yr warranty on the motor which failed, 2.5 years after purchase. LG arranged for a tech to come out who said they do not charge unless it isnt the part with the 10yr warranty. Turns out it wasnt the part it was the main board, the tech replaced this and I wasnt charged. Definitely not a scam and definitely no payment up front to repair.
I think LG after sales service is great.

    • +3

      MAGNETRONS! Engage!

      • +1

I must be a lucky one, 5 years and still going strong everyday

        • Same here… but the 25L and its over 5yrs old and going strong.. think i got it for 150 odd back then

        • +1

Mine went for 3.5 years and decided to die all of a sudden.

          • +13

@Karansingh: Get a full refund. Worked for me at Harvey Norman.

I wrote this email which the Harvey Norman rep sent to LG. LG came back and accepted a return authorisation. I was able to get a new one, full refund or store credit:

If it helps the claim under ACL warranty I did some research and found Canstar Blue suggests a microwave life span expectancy of 9-10 years. (source: https://www.canstarblue.com.au/appliances/appliances-life-expectancy/)

Choice also suggests 8 years for a mid-range microwave, which I would consider my one to be as it has the smart inverter technology and is more costly than something you’d buy from Kmart. (Source: https://www.choice.com.au/shopping/consumer-rights-and-advice/your-rights/articles/how-long-should-your-appliances-last)

I’d consider the failure of the magnetron a major failure under the ACL and Qld Gov regulations as the microwave cannot be used for its intended purpose (https://www.qld.gov.au/law/laws-regulated-industries-and-acc…).

I opted to spend more for a microwave that lasts as I’m very against disposing appliances to landfill, so I definitely do not consider less than 4 years a reasonable life expectancy for a two person household. Especially when considering the previous one of the same model failed in less than 3 years.

            • +1

@phatmike128: Good result, but don't get involved in retailer>manufacturer communication. This is a HN problem. Not LG nor yours. HN as always trying to pass the buck.

              • +1

@Typical16-bitEnjoyer: I didn’t. Harvey Norman said that lg considered it out of warranty and past it’s expect life. I sent hn this and told them to go back to lg.

      • Finally a microwave that runs on energons.

      • "Magnetron" is the leader of the Decepticomms (sic)… "Wifi signals don't deserve to live!"

    • +5

I agree, i have bought a few of these LG neochef microwaves of various sizes and model numbers and all have had failed magnetron mostly just outside of warranty. Multiple failed spectacularly with smoking or blue electric arcing involved. I would never buy these lg microwaves again were it not for the fact my partner loves the all black aesthetic

      • +2

So they lasted over 10 years? Thats the warranty.

    • maybe need megatron instead

    • +1

They all basically use the same Magnetron.

Only the screw holes and cooling fan blade position differs. I just chucked an old 1990 hard rubbish magnetron into a new inverter model. Works perfect.

But if they stuff up the reflector / dispersing or cooling part of a magnetron…that will kill it prematurely. But you should hear/ smell/ see the arcs first.

  • Is Kmart 25L Microwave for $89 a better deal wrt cost and if I dont need any fancy smart features?
    https://www.kmart.com.au/product/25l-microwave-42666981/?sku…

    • -2

Nope, Kmart stuff (especially appliances) is landfill. Avoid.

      • +3

I had a Kmart microwave and it was still like new after 6 years of regular use when I sold it on Gumtree.

        • +1

Two issues it always beeps when food is done.

          Mine rusted.

Doesn't feel as nice for daily use

      • +1

Nah man, my Kmart microwave is going strong 6 years on

    • +1

I have this. Lasted 4 years so far without any issues. Used probably one a day max though. It does the job 👍. Just make sure the height and width are ok for your needs…

    • yes if you arent a heavy user kmart ones last for years, i got the 32L one.

    • we got one about 8 years ago, and used it multiple times every day for about 4 years but then we moved, still in our old place and gets used a few times a year.
It depends if you get the good or bad one as we got a second one for the new place and it died in about 6 months.

    • +2

By golly that's the ugliest microwave I've ever seen.

  • back to $197 …

  • Our one sometimes throws an error if used with not much in it, needs to be unplugged for a few hours then comes good again.
Ours is 7 years old used daily

  • +2

I had the 42l ,which had died exactly after 3 years of extended warranty from TGG. They didn't want to repair even though it was just 5 days out of warranty period.luckily ACL helped ,and LG repaired it for free.

  • +4

Mine literally blew 2 days ago. Piece of shit.

    • How old is it? See my comment in thread above. May help deal with getting a refund.

  • -1

I purchased it from jb a while back and got refund before i left the shop picking it up. The inside height seemed to low to heat up a microwave pouch of rice without it hitting the top frame. Plus the front panel and door opening area looked cheap and nasty.

    • Are the microwave manufacturers supposed to design around microwave rice or the other way around?

      • Designed around microwave rice. Serious first world problem otherwise

  • Complete junk unfortunately

  • +1

I have a MV with dark tinted door. It works but I hate it. You can't see what's happening to your food. Yep 1st world problem but for me it's real. I'm keeping it, but I hate it!

  • We had one of these for about 4 years but then it started sparking and igniting inside the microwave.. called LG for replacement assuming it was the magnetron, but they wanted to send it away for assessment and if it was not the magnetron we'd have to pay for the assessment, so it's now going to landfill.

Other than an old 60" plasma TV, all our LG products seem to fail

  • +15

If it helps.. a microwave basically hasn't changed in 50 years. Inverter triacs replacing heavy transformers. The rest the same.

Magnetrons should last forever. Got our microwave when I was 10 (I'm now 45). Inherited it when I moved out.
So 35 years, still works like new.

The key is to keep the little shiny square cardboard bit (mica) clean, or replace with a $1 from eBay if it looks burnt. Don't run it with dry stuff (it will bounce back and cook the magnetron instead).
Give the vent areas plenty of flow. Inside a tight cupboard, the magnetron may warp if run for more than 3mins continuous.

Modern failure would be the relay that activates the magnetron or the triac on the inverter board ($5 fix) or the magnetron itself (if the above breached).

I grabbed 2 for friends today at an ecycle bin. One just works fine (lady dropping it off said its an extra they don't need). The other had fat in front of the magnetron, which caused it to arc. Cleaned it off. Spray some paint on metal (make sure it's lead free..most are now)… Works fine. Took just under 10 mins. They are very simple machines. So much respect for the designer of the magnetron. Brilliant.

**Do not play with a microwave for a few hours after being turned on. Best still leave it till the next day They have big capacitors that produce 4000 volts. Will kill you. **

    • +10

Easy fix. Simple machines. Cheap repair.

      Will kill you

      That escalated quickly

      • +1

Yah I was waiting urgently for that last, critical, life-saving caveat piece of information. Incorrectly repairing or mis-handling energised domestic appliances or circuits can be very bzzzzt for your health.

      • Well, technically just driving to work can kill you. Arguably far more risky than changing 4 screws holding a magnetron… BUT…we live in that world where we need to cater for the one idiot…so yeah, public service announcement…leave it off for a day before touching it.

Also a caveat - Wear a seat belt..and sometimes people leave their indicators on.. they might not actually turn etc

        • +1

          Nice false equivalency.

Something closer, but still utterly missing the mark, would be you telling someone who has never driven a car ever and doesn't have a licence to just wing it and drive to work.

LG are notorious for this kind of bad corporate behaviour.

    • +2

Well, Life's Good if you give yourself a Goldstar

      • oooh Goldstar, Lucky you!

        • Damn. Beat me to it.

          • +2

@Aleigh123: Just lucky. Here, for you:🎖️(I don't need it, got a Panasonic ;)

      • Lucky them.

    • I remember when I had LG products.

I experienced their "customer support" that don't even read what you write before spamming irrelevant script at you - you tell them your microwave isn't working and they say it's because of your antivirus.

Then on their Facebook you get to meet an army of seemingly unassociated individuals who comment on every post claiming to have that product and how it's made their life so good. Between spreading the good word about their collection of the entire LG washing machine lineup they'll tell you how it's not the LG microwave's fault that your antivirus is bad!

  • These microwaves are so light the whole thing moves even you open the door

  • +2

Mine and my friend’s both died in two years. Never go for LG again.

  • Mine started rusted after 18months. Rubbish.
And somehow it is not covered by warranty. Shit customer service.
You're better off with a Kmart one.

  • I have a Sharp that's probably older than me. Works great.

Friend has a LG with the notorious say bye bye to wifi when using.

    • -1

The wifi is an easy fix. Connect your devices to 5ghz (not the 2.4ghz) if it’s an option in your wifi device setting

  • My Samsung smart inverter is going strong after 12 years. It was faulty and replaced under warranty within first few months when I purchased it.

  • I know these look cool but from what I can see on ozbargain a lot of people have terrible experience. yet we keep buying, is there no better option out there or something?

  • Mine started issues after a year or so used

  • While there are the downs on this LG, mine is still going strong after 1 year, fingers crossed 🤞

  • Black microwaves are so late 90s. And 23L is too small.

  • Ours died just after warranty period at 2 years and 4 months just 2 weeks ago, would not buy again.

  • +3

Funny hearing everyone's complaints about this microwave, when 2 to 4 years ago (when I had bought my one, which is still going), this microwave was an Ozbargain favourite.

  • kmart one is better

  • +2

Mine started sparking flames. This is the Heymix of microwaves.

  • +1

I also thought LG Microwaves were ok.

seems like the 3-5 year olds are now giving problems.

I've always stuck with Panasonic (now flatbed). Had multiple over 25 years, 1 died, the rest given away when moving, renovating.

    • I had my first for over 15 years and the next one going now over 10 years. First one didn't even break, it just didn't fit in the cubby of the house I bought so I got a new one. I don't doubt others who have had bad experiences, but I am on the Panasonic microwave bandwagon until they give me a real good reason not to be.

      • +1

        I’m the same.

        They aren’t expensive either.

I would have stuck to Panasonic TVs too if they sold OLEDs.

        • Same, my Panasonic plasma is still going strong. However, that is the 3rd ranked TV in the house behind bigger Sony's.

  • So what is a good one then ?
