    • What’s her name?
      Jokeher ?

Isn't she a scammer? Like she got in over actual talented breakers due to her connections/money. That's far worse than simply being a letdown.

  • +1

The video popped up on YouTube and I thought wtf…. Is this real? Reminded me of this sketch from Little Britain

  • +2

One thing I did notice in all this is that every time I checked back in to this post, the poll numbers have very consistently reflected a 1:5 ratio of for vs against.
So for every 4 sane OzBargainers there's that 1 delulu person, and I think it's beautiful.

Can performing arts from the Summer Olympics. With the exception of pure gymnastics, get rid of diving, sync swimming, equestrian, artistic swimming, rhythmic gymnastics, breaking. Their only claim to being a sport is having some form of athleticism slapped on top of a performing art. These are not sports

  • I'm glad Breaking has been dropped as an Olympic sport, but there's another sport that really needs to go from the Games: Walking. It's the only sport where you're allowed to go fast, but disqualified for being too fast. Athletes deliberately cripple their performance.

    • +2

You can't be disqualified for being too fast, only for not using the same technique. This is a feature in almost every single Olympic sport

      • the world record for javelin might never be broken because they banned some super dangerous throwing methods. You can be disqualified for using them.
      • freestyle swimming is way faster than any other stroke, but they are all still part of the competition. You can be disqualified for using freestyle techniques in other strokes.
      • the most impressive gymnastics and figure skating moves are all banned cause they kept injuring or killing people. You can be disqualified for doing those moves.
      • A running start is faster than any other way of starting a running race, but is banned.

You can find limits like that in pretty much every sport. And that's before we even get into the discussion of how athletes deliberately cripple their performance by not taking performance enhancing drugs.

A lot of comments here from a "spectator" position with no real insight of what breakdancing is about.

    1. Her husband wasn't a judge in the qualifiers

    2. She has been one of the top ranked b-girls in Australia (it's just the reality of an underdeveloped "sport" in australia and women in it is even less)

    3. There are a bunch of floormoves that actually do look a bit silly, but done in the right way in the right combinations it can look really clean and creative, and in my opinion the way she did it was fairly hacked together, but I can see what she was "attempting" to do lol. Powermoves (the spectacle of breakdancing, and to be honest the only thing the general public find "impressive" was obviously non existent, which is common in a lot of b-girl battles.

Anyway… did she deserve to be there… yes, was she good, no, she seemed to have overcomplicated her set, and shoved a whole lot of stuff in, instead of creatively flowing from move to move, sometimes less is more.

    • You seem to be one of the few sane responses here.

Everyone accusing her of cheating her way to the Olympics somehow seem to give zero proof of this.

Shows how far we have fallen from a 'give em a fair go' country.

      • -1

aren't we a 'tall poppy gets smashed down' country for a while now?

haven't seen or been able to find Raygun's performance, but most ppl just sound like they wish they went to the Olympics instead of her

we're an entitled and jealous country of "shoulda, coulda, woulda"

        • The whole world is laughing at her and us. The contention is that the Olympics is about trying to be the best. She didn't even bother, and hijacked a spot, seemingly for her pointless social sciences papers.
Much like Laydown Sally 20 years ago, she's not copping it for being bad, she's copping it for not trying.

          • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: I haven't seen the whole thing but apart from wearing completely inappropriate attire for the sport how do we know she didn't try? She isn't just really crap. The little clips that I saw does show she's pretty unco for a dancer.

      • Yeah I was quite involved in breakdancing in my high school and started to participate in competitions for a few years.

It seems that she legitimately got the spot, but maybe there wasn’t equal opportunities due to location of the qualifiers.

Pretty similar to futsal and national qualifications (something else I am involved in), in the past few years more biased to NSW players because the NSW coach is only familiar with them. Thankfully in the recent years Victoria has been making a bigger mark in the national competitions creating more exposure and getting more equal opportunities.

But that’s just how underdeveloped programs work. They have limited funding and have a process that is as legitimate as is can be given the circumstances/limitations.

Most people on forums like this are just speaking from a spectator perspective, so it’s really just uninformed opinion/popular opinion

  • your uni degrees means nothing now
that's the raygun cherry on top

any incompetent person with a uni degree is a raygun (most of ozbargain)
urban dictionary should definitely add this new word.

  • -1

I think calling breakdancing a sport is a bit of a joke… I didn’t even realise it was an Olympic sport

But to me, it seems like she went there knowing she had no chance of winning so she indulged in the great Aussie tradition of having fun and being able to laugh at yourself.

The amount of hate she has gotten is ridiculous, people saying “she humiliated the country” is a joke. We won plenty of gold medals, we finished 4th overall. There’s nothing to be humiliated about.

If nothing else she brought a lot of attention to breakdancing as an Olympic sport. Good for her.

  • -1

Kind of like our Prime Minister’s economic credentials are Raygunomics .
In theory and in isolation they probably sound like good ideas but in reality are just hacked together policies that don’t work and lots of ass covering to make up for the incompetence .

    • +5

Scomo hasn't been the PM in years..

      • Good one and correct so have a point ,

This latest one isn’t a hole lot better though if he can’t collect taxes from the country’s biggest businesses and puts the weight of financial supply on the working class , while also increasing immigration to keep wages low .
Why does Norway with a similar Petro/Mining Economy have the Worlds largest Wealth Fund while we can barely keep Hospitals and Schools running.

Just because the alternate government is even worse , doesn’t mean we can’t be critical of the existing government .

They are both captured by Overseas Mining Companies , Corporations and Technology Companies in the Media Space that are Massive Tax Evaders .

        But I digress .

  • +3

It's pretty simple… Interpretative dance is it's own category. She tried to join that with breakdancing. Ok fine, but you still need a "base" of breakdancing moves. She is capable of that. See "move it mobb style" for similar moves done to hip hop and with flair.

    • -1

Exactly. The judges are used to seeing particular 'Murican and Euro moves and anything else doesn't rate at all and deemed 'cringe' - boohoo hurt their feelies so unkool.

The sport is still in its infancy compared to artistic gymnastics and frickin equestrian events that's been around for Yonkers.

      • +1

There’s actually certain breakdance competitions with very objective/stringent judging guidelines, most of these judges im sure have been in the breakdance scene for a long time. I think it was called r16, that put together a proper judging criteria for breakdancing.

        https://www.redbull.com/in-en/red-bull-bc-one-cypher-india-2…

Quote “ The reason: while there were massive audiences cheering, they were not really able to connect with the breakers because they just watched for entertainment but were not able to understand the battles.”

This is most people here, where breakdancing is just epic/difficult tricks, when there’s a whole lot more to it that most will not understand

Her kangaroo pose should be our national flag.

Australia would achieve everlasting fame, no promotion required.

    • +1

The silhouette is as iconic as Air Jordan.

Instead of Nikes motto 'Just do it', Raygun's could be 'Did it' or 'Dunnit' for authentic Aussie flavour. I would buy the t-shirt and baseball cap.

      • Raygun's could be 'Did it' or 'Dunnit'

I wonder how many on here are part of the sad farkers who are signing up to the change.org petition?

    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-08-15/raygun-calls-for-end-…

Get a life, boys and girls - the Games are over, and the "sport" will not be repeated in LA, nor hopefully in Brisbane and later.

    • +2

so after all, 50K plus votes don't count? lolz, joker everywhere

      • -1

        You got this bit correct:

so after all, 50K plus votes don't count?

        • fine, clearly you belong to "joker everywhere" then

          • -3

@mountaineer: The jokers are everywhere - there's 50,000 of them signed a petition that means SFA, and half of them now seem to be posting on this thread.

  • I felt her performance was hard to watch for me but I admire her for her effort, thinking (of trying something new) and she definitely came across as someone with a positive attitude (though the legions of online abuse may change that).

I think she did nothing wrong, gave it a go, did her best. I think the blame lies with the selectors and the system that enabled her to get as far as the Olympics and set her up to fail. She was just doing what she thought was valued (after all, she did win multiple tournaments here according to the news).

  • -7

There are definitely more talented break dancers that could have performed. It really came across that this was a junket. Especially with her husband being on the selection panel and also that she has not returned home with the other Olympic athletes as yet.

    • +4

      https://www.skynews.com.au/australia-news/sport/aoc-defends-…

Her husband was not on the selection panel. This was debunked ages ago. Please stop spreading this garbage.

Not defending her performance at all but please let's stick to the facts. This is getting ridiculous.

      • +1

Thanks for the link and can see what has been said about her husband is incorrect. What is interesting is this "Gunn qualified at the Oceania Championship in October 2023". Wonder if there is a video of her performance at that event and how it compares to the Olympics performance ?

        • Seen a little of it utube ,
More Homer Simpson or Three stooges than Elaine Benise .

        • +2

There was one on the Reddit thread that was linked somewhere else amongst these 5 pages. Let me find it for you.

  • +3

We as tax payers funded this. I have had more lols from this then any other use of my tax dollars.

Raygun actions have a very high tax $ to giggle ratio - you need to lighten up.

  • +1

    A legendary letdown.

  • +1

Her ego and lack of self awareness / reflection is awe inspiring.

  • +3

We need a Chris Lilley take on this

  • +4

She made a mockery of actual Olympic athletes, a mockery of break dancing and a mockery of what this country stands for.

She literally said to channel 9 just before going on that she ‘practiced a total of 37 seconds’ and then proceeds to imitate a kangaroo and do the sprinkler.

It’s the equivalent of a boxer stepping into a ring wearing pom-poms on their fists.

A soccer player picking up every ball passed to them and booting it into the stands.

It’s pathetic and yet this woke, too scared to upset country is making her a hero and soon to be multi-millionaire.

    • Have you got a link to the channel 9 interview? Curious to see that….haven't heard about that one.

      • +1

        Same.

Surely it had to be some kind of sarcastic comment, or even if it wasn't she could brush it off as aussie humour.

    • -1

The mockery of Olympic athletes came from the fact that dancing was included in the first place.

  • I didn't enjoy it, but I am horrified by the shock jock take down of her character

    • +3

Her best course of action is apologies, owned it up instead of trying to arguing against the common sense and hoping for the magic sympathy. That's how people do when made mistake.

      • +2

Nah I think she should ride the tide, forget her role as a lecturer at uni or researcher, forget being a pro breaker, just become an all round meme
Soon people will forget the bad part and only remember the fun part, so she may be a wnner at the end if she wants to

  • 45,000 signed an anti-Raygun petition!? What a bunch of miserable haters you are

I have just watched two commentators on CNN International scratching their heads and wondering how such a petition could come out of Raygun’s own country. You are the ones embarrassing Oz, not her.

    • +1

I've always assumed that most of those change.org or whatever petitions are signed by bots.

Didn't think anyone, especially anyone in a position to make a real decision, paid any attention to the petitions whatsoever.

    • the 45,000 combined wouldn't be as miserable as the scribe Peter Fitz

  • +4

    You need a I don't care option

  • +4

I would be okay if she mocked it being an olympic sport. But she is serious about it and truly thinks she did a great job.

She is just so arrogant, entitled and delusional.

  • +1

It’s not okay that she wasn’t competitive.

    • -5

Breaking news - she's not the first, and certainly won't be the last.

But she was there, and we are all here in our basements or Ivory Towers, making poor, and often ill-informed, comments about something that shouldn't have been an issue in the first place.

      • +1

Representing a country means representing its citizen and on tax money that they pay.
So every person sitting in basement or ivory tower has right to demand what's it worth questioning.

I don't think there would be any person complaining about her performance if it was local tournament. But when you wear green/yellow jersey on international stage, you're way more than just individual. You are 2.5 million Aussies.

      • +1

there is a massive difference in being not very competitive at a sport and having no clue about a sport. let us criticize the latter, especially if they can somehow compete at Olympics.

        this is fraud.

      • +1

But she was there, and we are all here in our basements or Ivory Towers, making poor, and often ill-informed, comments about something that shouldn't have been an issue in the first place.

The irony here is that you're using the phrase Ivory Tower, which is typically applied to reference academia and privilege. Which would more accurately apply to a university lecturer with an incredibly wishy-washy degree than a bunch of armchair experts (which is the phrase you were probably looking for) on a bargain forum.

        Ivory Tower
A place or attitude of retreat, especially preoccupation with lofty, remote, or intellectual considerations rather than practical everyday life.
A sheltered, overly-academic existence or perspective, implying a disconnection or lack of awareness of reality or practical considerations.

It wouldn't have been an issue if it had been someone like this little girl instead- a lot of people are wondering why the opportunity to represent went to some academic who must have been aware of her own limitations, instead of encouraging someone with obviously more skill to go.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_LEVN8LI70

  • -3

So when was the last time you questioned the performance of an Australian "athlete" during or after a Games?

There have been plenty who qualified legitimately, but have failed to get through preliminary rounds, or bombed out in early stages.

This whole hooha about Raygun is just about people looking for something to feel offended about - driven of course by the bottom feeding media.

    A Change.org petition - FFS. 🤣

    • +1

You can judge the sincerity of an athlete's effort.

    • +1

Yeah because sending someone to the Olympics with actual skill and experience is a dumb idea.. seriously?

  • +2

I think people are pissed because they can see that this is going to end up with her making a lot of money for interviews while a potential sport getting into the Olympic’s got thrown under the bus .
This is a sport , or at least a very physical activity with gymnastic ability that grew out of a street dancing scene , from underprivileged people that only requires a piece of cardboard on the street ,
not a giant gym or the like , it was an egalitarian activity that the young and bored people could do and put a lot of time into , kind of like skating or bmx that got their chance at the Olympic’s .
I really don’t care about some dumb chick who did something whatever.
I just see a chance that got away and what that means for future athletes and kids .

  • +5

She was excessively bad, really really bad, compared to even the worst entrant from other countries.

I hope the investigation rumours are true and shes made to pay back every tax payer dollar spent to send her and her family on a holiday to Paris.

  • -1

She became an iconic meme worldwide and will represent Australia forever. I’d say take it full on with pride as an Australian

  • -1

    How the turn tables.
Originally, a let-down, in terms of Olympics also a let-down, now? She's become a legend; the meme lasted more than a couple of days and took the entire world by storm. She is an honourary legend, similar to that of Democracy Manifest, not as large but still an Aussie Hero.

I really expected it to be a meme that died off and nothing to look back on but now it's done a complete 180. Amazing.

    • +1

Not even in the same league as Democracy Manifest. The guy was a true original and funny. She was pure cringe.

      • ROFL, Ironically the meaning of "Democracy Manifest" was explained by Karlson (the succulent Chinese meal guy) as judgement by the people, through the media….

    • +1

So you're saying that the Olympics, which are meant for the top athletes of the world to compete, should be a meme? Ok 👌🏼. Instead of letting someone with skill compete, we got her. Making Australia the laughing stock of the world.

      Human stupidity at its finest.

      • -4

Literally no one, besides athletes and boomers care about olympics.
Sub 40 year olds only want memes.
She was a joke, now an epic meme, a modern day hero.
Breakdancing isn’t a real competitive sport, there is no objective greatness, all subjective judging. Unlike times in races or records in sports, breaking has nothing of the sort, it’s a ‘for-fun’ sport, thinking otherwise is ignorant.

  • Neither. I do not blame her personally. She won her place fairly and should be allowed to experience being part of the olympics.
It's the selection committee or body who failed.
If she was the best of the people who tried to qualify, it's on them for not trying to get more candidates.

  • +2

Raygun can be as stupid as she likes and embarrass herself everyday for all we care, what we don’t like is her doing it on a world stage while representing Australia. AOC should be ashamed for having her represent Australia.

  • -2

I honestly find this whole discussion very hard to take part in. On the one hand, I found her entire performance absolutely terrible and think it's offensive to have her claim to be an Australian sportsperson, let alone an Olympian. Having a PhD from a real university, I also had to have a laugh at the absolute garbage quality 'PhDs' Macquarie 'University' keeps pumping out.

However, I also feel like breakdancing as a whole isn't a sport at all, and am quite pleased that her nonsense has helped to ensure it is never a part of the Olympics again - so I have to thank her for that.

  • Well at least she got a nice holiday at the Paris Olympic’s , so alls well that ends well .

  • Late to the party, but that was disgusting. Not even fit for a meme.

  • I hear they are going to give her another shot at a medal before she comes back from Paris . Sprinkler Fight ! Go Gunny Go Gunny

  • -2

How did she manage to get selected to represent Australia? That's what I'm interested in. It's difficult to discern fact from fiction, speculation and hearsay from the various sources available online

    • +2

That's been discussed a thousand times on this post. I suggest you read before re-hashing this whole comment section again.

  • Bring back Double Dutch for the Olympics !

She was a good bit of comical relief for a sport that should not be in the Olympics, its a sad joke that break dancing is in the Olympics

    • SShh. Not allowed to call it break dancing it's way cooler than that and called simply "breaking"
