"Bunnings, petrol cash back loophole offers Aussies 'free money' this weekend"

Loophole… surprised they didn't call it a "hack"

    • +8

And that a busy Kmart mum discovered this hack.

      • +6

I'm waiting for Daily Mail to post their article: Bunnings Has Everyone Melting Their Brains Over Insane Fuel Price Hack"

    • So you're one of those headline-only readers…

This Sunday, you’ll be able to get the equivalent of over 20c/L off your next tank of fuel. And best of all, this new discount loophole is not just with one chain.
It’s possible at most petrol stations, and with Dan Murphys and Bunnings. Here’s how this new hack works.

      • +1

        Haha

Don't forget this gem.. "it’s a real advancement in the art of money-saving."

    @nocure @WookieMonster

$5 bonus cashback on $50 gift card seems to apply to the other gift cards in the range too i.e.
Liquor; Pet & Vet and Tradies & DIY (includes Bunnings).

Is it $5 bonus cashback per gift card type or $5 bonus cashback per member?

    From the article:

And other new categories offering the same deal this Sunday include Liquor (hello Dan Murphys or frankly just about any bottle shop you prefer), ‘Pet & Vet’, or ‘Tradies & DIY’ (Bunnings, here I come).

So yes, this Sunday you can effectively get a 10 per cent discount to stack on top of any other discount in-store at most petrol stations, bottle shops, pet stores, vets, pet insurers and hardware stores.

  • +6

they removed the grocery gift card

    • +1

I left message on online chat and got reply:
"Thank you for getting in touch with our team, I hope you’re having a great day.

Unfortunately, this gift has been sold out this would explain why the link to the gift card has been taken down. We are hoping to restock soon."

      • +1

It can just set minimum $100(or more) denomination to discourage all people aim at it.

    • +1

They did you a favour - I bought one in a recent $5 bonus offer and it doesn't work. I contacted them and apparently it's been "escalated for further investigation" but we'll see. I assume they do usually work, but I'm not going to be buying another to check.

      • How is it not working for you? Mine still does.

        • I tried using it at Coles and Woolworths - I got a "transaction not allowed" message at Coles, and Woolworths wanted me to swipe a physical card. I get an error if I try to verify the card in my Google wallet, or try to check the balance or register the card.

      • Please report back once you hear from them. Thank you. I bought one too in a recent $5 bonus offer. Haven't got the chance to use it at Coles or Woolworths.

  • "Gift Cards may take up to 72 hours to be delivered" - ouch

  • +2

Looks like the "Fuel & Auto" giftcard is very similar to 7-Eleven giftcard?
both giftcards support the similar MCCs (Fuel & Auto support a few more Auto shops, while 7-Eleven support convenient stores)
both giftcards use https://www.cardbalance.com.au/ to check balance

    • Yep both are Visa Prepaid gift card. But I wonder if it's easy to split transaction using this as I know that not all servos are happy to do it.

      • +1

No issues in splitting payment in 7-Eleven and Ampol stations, have not tried on others yet

        • With their own branded gift card, sure. But have you ever tried with generic gift card like this one?

          • +2

@foxes28: It doesnt matter, its just prepaid visa (added to apple pay)
I just asked for split card payments

            • +1

@littlesoldier: That's great! Just sharing my experience that some store attendants didn't want to do it until after I showed them that I'm using their gift card.

              • @foxes28: Just don't go back to those shops. Have not had issues with split payment from prepaid visa

      • +3

I have done split payments at Shell Coles Express with two 7-Eleven digital gift cards. The attendant had no issues doing this. I do not see why this gift card in this deal would be any different.

I also once did split payments between four payment cards at EG Ampol.

7-Eleven seems to be an odd case though, and I am not sure whether it is due to some attendants not being trained properly, or some other reason…

        • +2

Yeah that time there were few people behind me so maybe they just wanted to be quick.

        • +3

The 7-Eleven is an odd case and I've had the following:

          1. They say cannot split payment… kind of like at HJs usually they can split but sometimes the machine won't let them
          2. Attendant not trained correct
          3. You can split cards but only 3 maximum and after the 2nd card goes through it will prompt a message to them saying payment must be finalised on the next card
          • +1

@Poor Ass: That one time I had to argue a bit "how am I supposed to use up all the balance of your own gift card?" and finally he made it work

            • +1

@foxes28: also annoying when you give them the precise amount and they do some rounding and then you have to tell them to do it again

              • @Poor Ass: Lol I can imagine the grumpy face. I really need to learn how to use the pump with the pre-set $ amount. Last time I tried it didn't work (kept going beyond the limit). Not common in AU but in some countries people actually enter either the $ amount or the L prior to fuelling.

                • +1

@foxes28: yeah it's common I think they all got them both $ and L but hardly anyone uses it. but if you have to work out all the 4c discounts first too.

wouldn't matter just fill up what you want and tell them precisely how much you want

I remember there were a few times I said I will be paying over a few cards… then gave them the exact amount and they did some rounding so I got them to do it again… then after first card they assume the rest was one another WELL NO… they had to cancel that transaction and I told them exactly how much for the 2nd card and then rest on the third.

Also one time this person messed up someone's purchase and charged the wrong pump then there was all these reversals on the phone… that went on for like 20minutes I should of just left and come back… get served one of those police notices better than waiting

                  • +1

@Poor Ass: When I have just a little bit left on a gift card that I want to use up in a future split transaction I write it in on a piece of paper in big black font and keep it in my wallet. Hand it to the cashier and tell them charge this exact amount on the first card. This also helps overcome poor English comprehension with usually foreign staffed service stations.

                    • +1

@rokufan: Type the number on the calculator App.

                      • @Neoika: I want something I can hand to them, but that will work too.

                      • @Neoika: For those who forgot their algebra: taught in year 7/8 maths…

Litres to buy = Desire spend / ( petrol price - discount voucher)
                        = $50 / ( $1.655 - $0.04 )
= 30.96, using the above #s & can be update to your circumstance 🤑

    • Thanks for the check balance link, I couldn't find it anywhere.

    • both giftcards use https://www.cardbalance.com.au/ to check balance

Anyone managed to check balance on the website? Keeps returning an error message to "contact provider"

  • +1

I wonder if this is issued by ACTIV/BlackHawk Network.
I'm asking, because I ran into an issue with the Supermarket one by ShopBack (ACTIV/BlackHawk Network).

    • +1

tell me the issue I'll let you know the answer

    • +2

Yes, this is the T&Cs from cashrewards https://incentivesgiftcard.com.au/terms-conditions/

It states Blackhawk Network Australia Pty. Ltd. ACN 123 251 703 (‘Blackhawk’) is Heritage’s program manager for the Card

      • Legend. I didn’t think of that, thank you!
        +1

        • supermarket one and this one have certain restrictions too

  • Does this work at petrol stations?

    • +1

It should work for almost all of them as they would be under Service Stations (5541) MCC

      • +1

Ok, will purchase when the offer is active :)

        7% off a tank of $50 is a pretty decent deal 👌

        • +1

          12%

          • @foxes28: oops my bad, can’t do simple math

          • @foxes28: There seems to be a number of up-beat comments here regarding a potential $6 discount ( $5 + [2% x $50] ) on a needed-petrol-spend.

What am I missing here ?

    • +2

This prepaid gift card is supposed to work at any service station categorised as MCC 5541 (Service Stations), as long as the service station chooses to accept this prepaid Visa gift card as a payment method. For example:

      • It should work if you are paying instore for fuel and/or convenience store items. I will note that EG Ampol is very likely to reject this prepaid gift card if you are trying to purchase a gift card, because the prepaid gift card in this deal is almost identical to a 7-Eleven digital gift card (which itself is just a specially-branded Activ Visa gift card), and EG Ampol appears to automatically reject 7-Eleven digital gift cards if you are purchasing a gift card.

      • I am not sure whether this prepaid Visa gift card would work on the various apps you can use to pay for fuel from your vehicle (e.g. BPme, EG Club app, Ampol FuelPay via the Ampol app, etc). Prepaid Visa gift cards do not support 3-D Secure, which makes them a riskier payment method for a merchant to accept through their apps. There is a chance that these apps require 3-D Secure support for any payment cards being used on these platforms… Additionally, I know that the EG Club app in the past has used MCC 5541, but I am not sure what the other apps use as their MCC.

This prepaid gift card is not supposed to work at MCC 5542 (Automated Fuel Dispensers), as that is explicitly listed in the gift card terms and conditions as an excluded MCC. This MCC is used for pay-at-the-pump machines (e.g. Costco, unattended Ampol service stations, unattended United service stations). However, I guess there is no harm in trying…

      • @WookieMonster: based on your commentS here, this E-gift cards work similar to-> https://www.prezzee.com.au/gift/open/41807922-a943-4d31-9223…

I can download the IMAGE on my-phone (NOT using E-wallet), use it to pay for EG-Ampol-petrol. The 2% money-back offer is ON-TOP of what-ever discount I have, eg $0.04 voucher etc.

Is this correct & thanks ?

        • No.

The gift card you linked to is a Coles digital gift card. You need to ask to pay by gift card, then scan the barcode and enter the PIN to redeem it.

The gift cards in this deal are prepaid Visa gift cards. If you want to redeem it in-person (whether at EG Ampol, Ampol Foodary, BP, Shell, etc), you must have it added to a mobile wallet first (Apple Pay, Google Wallet, Samsung Wallet), then ask to pay by card or Visa.

          • @WookieMonster: Thanks.

Given the small risk of scammers cleaning out balances in prepaid-Visa-gift-cards, what prudent practice would you suggest, eg buy small amounts, say $50 & use-up in 1 (or 2) go & replenish when needed, say 2 days prior ?
            https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/activ-visa-prepaid…

            • +1

@ab c: I would not be as worried about scammers cleaning out balances on the gift cards in this deal when compared with Activ Visa gift cards, because:

              • The gift cards in this deal are restricted to a very small number of MCCs, which would greatly reduce a scammer's ability to drain the gift card's balance. On the other hand, Activ Visa gift cards can be used at nearly every type of merchant across the world.

              • This gift card scheme is relatively new and uses card information that I have not seen before on Activ Visa gift cards, 7-Eleven digital gift cards nor Category Choice gift cards.

Having said that, you should probably only purchase an amount you would be comfortable having temporarily stolen by a scammer, so if you are happy to purchase $50 at a time (and the merchants you go to can handle split payments), I think that is a sensible approach. If you are particularly concerned about having $50 on one of these gift cards, my suggestion is to use whatever gift card you purchase to purchase another gift card sold at the merchant. For example, if you have a Fuel & Auto gift card and purchase fuel from an Ampol-branded service station (e.g. Ampol Foodary, EG Ampol), you could go to an Ampol Foodary service station and purchase a $50 AmpolCash physical gift card, and use your Fuel & Auto gift card as a payment method.

I had not read the Product Review page for Activ Visa gift cards, so thank you for the reminder to check it out. Keep it out that you only usually hear horror stories on Product Review pages… If it is any comfort, there is a pile of about 100 used Activ Visa gift cards next to my desk (and countless digital Activ Visa gift cards and Category Choice gift cards and 7-Eleven digital gift cards), and the only issue I've had with them is Blackhawk Network (the gift card scheme owner) blocking one of my gift cards after trying to make a $3 PayPal purchase at Chemist Warehouse.

      • +1

I've successful paid with a saved 7-Eleven card in the EG Club and Ampol FuelPay apps.

  • can anyone pls share the list of fuel station, where it can be used?

    • +1

any fuel stations with the merchant eftpos category as MCC 5541 (Service Stations)
basically it should work with all fuel station
but might not work in some individual stations and specific stores (eg. Costco fuel station?)

      • +1

and is there any webpage showing all with merchant eftpos category as MCC 5541? or it can be only either call or visit merchant?

        • +2

wont cover all stores in australia, but some major ones reported by ozb community
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/mcc_list

otherwise, you may do a purchase with a credit card
then ask the bank resp the MCC code of that transaction

        • +1

Don't go to Medco or U-Go as there have been cases (myself included) where another similar card didn't work. If you stick with the major brand, then you'll be fine.

          • @foxes28: 7-Eleven gift card didn't work for me at U-Go.

    • +1

@munishsinghal Here is the list for 7-Eleven gift card which is similar for the service stations:

Has worked in Costco in March according to the list but it shouldn't.

  • Wish Blackhawk would fix their sh*t. I'm still in Blackhawk jail.

    • I've been there any no way for them to fix they just always say there doesn't seem to be anything wrong on our end

So what you need to do is contact them and ask them to change your profile to another email address. Once that's done you can see your old profile again by using the new email

      • What do you mean change profile to another email address? I wasn't aware there is one associated with the Blackhawk cards?

Including ones I've tried that had no association to any existing email - received from a competition to a unique competition exclusive email address

          • @Poor Ass: By jail I mean unable to add cards to Apple Pay on a specific device… assume it's different to the issue you had?

            • @cooni:

unable to add cards to Apple Pay on a specific device

              ya that's nothing new

haha yeah they blocked my account because I was giving them too much business

    • I received the "invalid card" error when adding it to Apple Pay. They were unable to fix the issue and blamed other factors, but it worked fine when I added the card to a different device.

      • Yes exactly this problem. But it's on my main device which sucks.

  • will this work for EV charging ?

    • +1

Probably not as electric vehicle charging services use MCC 5552 which is not listed.

      • Can you pay at the counter?

    • curious to know the MCC for EV charging or would it also be 5541 or whatever on the app

  • Hopefully shopback will up the ante

    • I think they only have Ampol, 7 Eleven, BP and those Travel swap cards that can be turned into Ampol and BP… I don't think they have any automotive cards

  • can i do split payment in 711 wanted to make sure i can use all of the amount in the card

    • I did split payments at petrol stations (including 7/11) with no issues. Paid through Google Pay

      • I sometimes make 3 split payments. A cashier once told me I can make unlimited split payments

  • -1

Does anyone else not see the $5 Bonus Cashback on the page via the OP link? Still shows just the standard 2% for me.

    • Came to say this

    • Not all heroes wear capes. Many thanks!

    • Hip hop hurray!

  • Can I use this directly to pay in store without adding it to a wallet?

    • No you cannot, must be added to digital wallet which then used via Apple/Google/Samsung Pay

  • +1

On my Google Pay it's coming up as saying verify 3 digit number to use online-
Then when I do it gives an error?

    ( number is correct)
Says will update all cards with this profile or something .

I guess it may not matter as will be tap+go ?

    • +2

      Ignore it.

      • Cheers Neoika

        • Was about to ask the same. Thanks for the info

  • +2

Very easy, filled up the tank with a 711 chopper lock (another Oz professional hack) saving $7.5, 2% cashback for the remainder split $50 payment (HSBC - $0.72) and $6 from this gift card offer - $14.22 saved

  • So this Petrol card can use for EG Petrol station too?

  • +1

Picked One via app, thanks for sharing OP!

  • Can I buy the Liquor gift card and buy Colesmyer/wish gift cards from Liquorland or Dan Murphy? Since it’s by tap. Does Dan Murphy still sell wish gift cards?

    • +1

      @magster
Does Dan Murphy still sell wish gift cards?

Think only DM cards last I looked…

      • +1

I have not seen a WISH gift card for sale at Dan Murphy's or BWS in a few years.

The closest I got in the last few years is when I went into a BWS in 2022 and they had a display with WISH GIFT CARDS at the top, but there were only BWS gift cards hanging underneath.
