Thanks OP. But too much hassle for too little gain! Good for the ones who need to meet credit card spending requirement

  • Confirming that this doesn’t work with the ATO?

    • As per the table in the OP, no. It has been permanently blocked (either by the merchant or the gift card scheme owner).

    • +2

Blackhawk Network - the Activ Visa gift card scheme owner - has always blocked transactions at the ATO on Activ Visa gift cards.

It is also against the Activ Visa gift card terms and conditions to try to use an Activ Visa gift card for transactions at the ATO.

  • Are these cards safe to store for a while or are these easily hackable?

    • +2

I would not store these, to each their own though. I don't know they are easily hackable but you have basically 0 chance of recovery if they are hacked.

    • Surely inflation eats your profit if you store it

  • +1

@HamBoi69 Can confirm no longer works on DEFT. Tried 2 minutes ago. Unless there is a card activation delay, this is not working.

    • Cheers, will update the table in the post.

  • Could this be used to top up an Australia Post Prepaid MasterCard?

  • Are these hackable?

  • +7

    What in the money laundering

  • +5

OMG. That is basically you are the free labor for them to use to boost their sales. They dont even want to pay you.

    • There was once after I added a fresh card to PayPal, the card was suspended immediately probably due to the zero charge by PayPal. I would rather pay 30c more for TCN VISA for less hassle and more versatile use.

      • yeah. TCN visa support name and mobile verification. Activ card sucks, hard to check balance and harder to use, much less supported. Often got declined for online transactions.

  • Can this be used instore with google pay ?

    • Yes, as long as the merchant chooses to accept Google Pay and Activ Visa gift cards as a payment method. Nearly all will, but there are some edge cases. For example, you can use this in-store at Woolworths via Google Pay, but Woolworths chooses to block Activ Visa gift cards as a payment method if you are trying to purchase a handful of gift cards (e.g. Vanilla Mastercard gift card, Everyday WISH gift card, eBay gift card).

      • Thanks for the info. But how can Woolworths tell you are using Activ Visa if paying via Apple Pay or Google Pay? I thought Apple Pay won't share the card number with merchants.

        • +2

Woolworths cannot see the actual card number for your Activ Visa gift card, but they can see the virtual card number from Apple / Google / Samsung Pay. The virtual card number uses a particular BIN (bank identification number), and Woolworths knows this particular BIN is used by Activ Visa gift cards.1 Woolworths has set up their checkouts to check for the BIN of your payment card when you swipe/insert/tap at payment, and if the BIN is on Woolworths’ blacklist for the gift card you are purchasing, the checkout will trigger a Cancelled - Items Not Allowed error and you will need to use a different payment method.

          1. Back when Woolworths used to sell Activ Visa gift cards, my guess is that Woolworths worked with Blackhawk Network - the gift card scheme owner - to block transactions using a number of BINs that Blackhawk Network used across their gift card portfolio. I have seen at least six different BINs used by Blackhawk Network’s gift cards, and all of them are blocked by Woolworths when you are purchasing specific gift cards.

          • @WookieMonster: Based on my understanding, Apple Pay won't share virtual card numbers but only the last 4 digits of the Device Account Number which doesn't have BIN or similar identifiable part. If they do block such transactions, they probably work with payment processors and card networks to enforce this, which to me sounds a lot of efforts.

            • +1

              @1000060:

Based on my understanding, Apple Pay won't share virtual card numbers but only the last 4 digits of the Device Account Number which doesn't have BIN or similar identifiable part.

              That is not true.

Apple and Westpac say Apple Pay shares the Device Account Number (DAN) - not just the last four digits of the DAN - with the merchant.

Last night, I made a purchase at Shell Reddy Express using a 7-Eleven digital gift card, and the receipt shows the card number as <six-digit BIN>XXXXXX<last four digits of the DAN>. I have also seen something similar happen at many other merchants, including Ampol Foodary, Bunnings and a parking meter. If the full DAN was not shared with the merchant, why would these merchants show more than just the last four digits of the DAN? Additionally, if you go to add a new payment card via NFC on Samsung Wallet and tap a card from Apple Pay, Samsung Wallet will display the full 16-digit DAN and its expiry date.

If Apple only provided the last four digits of the DAN to the merchant, that means there would only be a maximum of 10,000 card combinations across the world, which is nowhere near enough to differentiate between all payment cards saved to mobile wallets across the world.

      • are you aware of coles's policy?

Wanna use this card to buy vanilla visa card next week. cheers bro

        • +3

Coles’ official policy is you cannot use any gift cards to purchase gift cards, but for Activ Visa gift cards, it should be up to staff to enforce this.

  • Can I add this card to shopback as payment?

  • +1

  • Guess Prezzee doesn’t accept this card either?

    • +4

Prezzee probably would not accept this gift card if you entered the card details directly into the debit/credit card section of the online checkout. (That would be due to the prepaid gift card not supporting 3-D Secure.)

You could attempt to get around this by using the prepaid gift card via Apple Pay, Google Pay or PayPal, but it has been over a year since I have tried to do this with an Activ Visa gift card. I actually suspect Blackhawk Network has blocked Prezzee transactions on Activ Visa gift cards, because, the Activ Visa gift card terms and conditions has the following clause:

      1. Cards cannot be used towards the purchase of any other gift cards or vouchers at participating merchants.

In my recent experience, Blackhawk Network has blocked transactions at a number of gift card portals, including:

      • Card.Gift - this was both via Google Pay and via PayPal, back when Card.Gift offered PayPal as a payment option
      • Giftz - via Apple Pay and PayPal
      • HCF Thank You

Considering Prezzee is a gift card portal, it would not surprise me if Prezzee was blocked too.

Purchased a gift card from them last year. Bankwest classified the transaction as a cash advance.

    • +2

Did you use the credit card directly, use Apple/Google Pay, or did you go via PayPal?

From past experiences with Giftz, the option you choose can determine whether your transaction is treated as a regular purchase or a cash advance.

      • +1

        Paypal

      • +1

Thanks for the link, very helpful!

    • do bankwest and CBA the only card provider that would experience this ?
I am with ANZ , how would I know if the transaction is classified as cash advance ? Is there a cash advance fee that will appear on the statement upon purchasing the Active Visa card ?

      • I have ANZ too and want to hit min spend but too nervous to pull the trigger bc of this

  • For those that have purchased this, what are you using it for?

I purchased a $100 card for DEFT but it is not working.

I can’t use it for any other bill services either.

I am regretting purchasing this card already, and am never going near Visa prepaid cards ever again.

Could somebody please help by suggesting a possible use of this VISA PREPAID GIFT CARD? Aargh, so frustrated!

    • Supermarkets?

I tried to purchase a Coles Mastercard gift card just now, and the payment was declined.

And now I can’t seem to check the card balance on their website.

I will try using it for regular grocery purchase, and see how it goes.

      • Update: I was unable to use it for regular grocery purchase at Coles.

I got an “Error code: 05 DECLINED DO NOT HONOUR” message.

I called their helpline and the representative advised me that my card was blocked as I had tried to use it with PayPal (I tried to pay a bill with AGL).

They said that they would need to request a replacement card for me, and that it would take 24 hours to arrive in my email…

@WookieMonster, do you know if Coles allows gift card purchases with Activ Visa cards? I read your comment about Woolies, and am curious to know if it applies to Coles too.

        • I had no issues using an Activ Visa gift card to purchase a gift card at Coles earlier this week, and I have not heard any reports since, so it probably still works.

          • +1

@WookieMonster: Ok, will try to use it at Coles once my replacement card arrives. Thanks for confirming :)

        • +2

          Same as mine -

bought 3 cards. used 2 cards with paypal, and no longer can use at any website. can not even check balance.
then I saw your comment, and I check the 3rd card balance, and it is working.

so DO NOT use this card with paypal !!!

  • Bought 3 cards ( 3 hours ago )

cant even check balance, error message: We are unable to process your request at this time. If you continue to receive this error, please contact Cardholder services by calling the number on the back of your card.

    deft- failed
    ato- failed
    postbillpay online - failed.

im not sure it was failed due to card not activated or not.

    • +1

When you are on the balance check website and see that error message, refresh the page. Does the page then display a puzzle for you to solve?

      • If so, complete the puzzle, then check the balance again.

      • If not, do you have any adblocking software on that web browser? If so, disable it and see if the website will then work.

    • Just check the balance of a previously used card there. If it works, the current cards have been suspended like I said above.

  • Anyone do Post Billpay in-person?

    • +1

postbillpay online is working - Do not link this card with your paypal, it will get blocked.

    • +2

I was able to do this for car rego in late July 2024, but I have not tried again since.

If you are going to try this, I would recommend you ask to pay by Visa credit. When I was paying my car rego last year, I asked to pay by Visa and the staff member responded with “Visa debit or Visa credit”? I chose Visa debit, but that only gave me the option to pay using eftpos (SAV) or eftpos (CHQ). When I then said Visa credit, the option to pay using Visa (CR) appeared on the EFTPOS terminal.

Also, keep in mind that some billers (e.g. ATO, DEFT) will not accept any Visa or Mastercard payments when paying via Post Billpay in-person, so make sure the biller accepts Visa as a payment option via Post Billpay.

@HamBoi69, can you update the table to indicate that using these at PayPal can be potentially problematic?

Myself, and two other users ( 1, 2) have expressed this. It seems that these gift cards sometimes get blocked when added to PayPal, if not always 🤷🏻‍♂️.

  • +1

Doesn't work for paying Vic land tax, says it can't verify the card. Went to Woolies and bought an ultimate gift card with it instead which went through fine.
