This is compound to put on a strop, to use as the last step when sharpening a knife. Not an ATL but not too bad, was $71 yesterday.

From what I've learned from youtube channel OUTDOORS55 this seems like a good choice, YMMV! Apparently diamond paste doesn't break down like chromium dioxide (the green stuff) and a good brand like DMT should in theory have a reasonable amount of particles in it. No personal experience yet with any of it but I'm giving it a shot.

If you know that you need only one size, single tubes are $35-40 with local shipping.

Regarding the different grits, DMT says:

Copper coded (6 micron / 4000 mesh) removes scratches with light pressure polishing action.
Yellow coded (3 micron / 8000 mesh) for a glossy bevel edge.
Gray coded (1 micron / 15000 mesh) for the ultimate polished mirror bevel edge.

Sorry, spaced out for a sec, what were you saying?

    • acasia acuminata or acasia mimosa?

  • Good price for this brand . There are cheaper options in diamond paste available - don't know how they compare.

    • My understanding is that possible differences might be a. fewer particles and b. wider range of particle sizes. However there seems to be no specifications of this type provided by anyone.

    • The cheaper it is, the more likely you will have grit size contamination.
It also may have a lot less diamond particles in it. But more often than jot is grit size contamination

i've re-read the title and description and am not sure if it's in english

clearly not for me lol. thought it was thermal paste.. still not sure if it is/isn't.

    • I thought it was paste too but the category says:

Kitchen & Dining › Kitchen Tools & Gadgets › Knife Sharpeners › Manual Knife Sharpeners

      • It's paste to put on a strop.

haha i dont even know what a strop is. sorry this is a "me" problem, not your description. googled it through looks like a sharpening stone

@lawyerz: Oh, sorry, my head's too deep into it. A strop is a piece off leather (typically) that you use to finish up the edge of a knife blade after sharpening it on a whetstone or a diamond plate. A fine abrasive compound needs to put into the strop, which is what this paste is.

    • I revised the description a little, hope that's better :)

I actually wonder how good this would be as a thermal paste?!?!

      • +1

Proobably not very good and expensive to boot! You could use it to grind/polish your CPU and heatsink surfaces however?

        • +1

Surprised I didn't think of that. Used to do lapping on the heatsink and CPU many many years ago. Did result in a very slight decrease in temps whilst overclocking.

  • There has been some analaysis of aliexpress compounds which came out on top of this brand.

I have tried the recommended "aliexpress" ones and they are good, esp for 1/4 or less of the price.

Can't seem to find the website anymore.

  • Why would you need a paste to strop i thought that was to get rid of the edge that had folded over?

    • +1

Nah.. edge removal is done at higher grit levels.

This is for fine edge work.

It's, ah, controversial. Here's a quote from someone who knows much more than I do:

The primary goal of stropping is to reduce the edge width by increasing the bevel angle near the apex (micro-convexity). Abrasive particles (paste, spray, etc) are applied to the strop to increase the rate of abrasion. The edge geometry that is achieved will depend on the type and size of abrasive, the strop material and the pressure and number of stropping laps applied.

      • Outdoor55 on YouTube clearly showed that a burr is the reason why a stone alone will not get you razor sharp, a strop will remove the burr and allow hair-splitting sharp. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTuZB8uGbaU
