    $349 1st Yr Fee… for 70k points??

far from my first pick, only if you've exhausted every other card and you're desperate

    • +3

      f them
I wouldn't do it even if desperate.

      Any good deals you recommend?

        Amex

      • +19

        no good deals to recommend.

but the least worst deals on right now are:
https://www.pictr.com/images/2024/08/08/xZmONl.png St George $214 fee for 80,000 qff points
https://www.pictr.com/images/2024/08/08/xZmXqj.png ANZ $195 fee for 75,000 qff points
        https://www.pictr.com/images/2024/08/08/xZmkd2.png ANZ $225 for 90,000 points
        https://www.pictr.com/images/2024/08/08/xZmKAP.png NAB $295 fee for 90,000 points

really gone down the drain in recent years in terms of picks and good bonuses fee free. I'd recommend looking at velocity, or cashback cards right now

        • Amazing, thanks for the effort.

I do remember it was like 160k qff points for ANZ frequent flyer black when i applied a couple years ago..

        • +1

Westpac also $225 for 90k points (assuming you go to the effort of signing up for a transaction account beforehand)

          • @iMagoo: Thanks, not too bad as well. Saved for my next card.

          • +1

@iMagoo: You don't need to hold a transaction account, you just need to have an online banking username and pass.

So even old customers can just log in to their old accounts to get the discounted offer

        • my top would be the https://www.pointhacks.com.au/credit-cards/anz-rewards-plati…
ANZ $149 for 70,000 QFF points (extra 30k points for more than 15 month hold but wouldn't bother with that)

          • @mckellad1: Wrong link?

Up to 100,000 bonus Velocity Points with the ANZ Rewards Platinum Credit Card

            • -2

@johnmelb: Nah, right link. Two main qualifying conditions:
              - 70k points for 2k spend in 3 months.
              - 30k points for keeping the card for 15months (paying 2x $149 fees)

              • +4

                @mckellad1: Velocity != QFF

                • @johnmelb: Apologies, you are correct @johnmelb and @lawyerz… have been looking at 20 different ones. I see the velocity instead of QFF as preferable in many instances.

                  • @mckellad1: I don't disagree. I'm starting to look at velocity as well after accumulating the 50k Aeroplan points, noted redemption amount needs seems to be less. Still green in velocity but want to start.

                    • @lawyerz: This is interesting, I was under the understanding that the 50k Aeroplan points couldn't be redeemed I. Anything other than Air Canada.
Would you mind sharing what you're thought is?

                      • +1

@kaish1986: aeroplan points can be redeeemed on all or some (I havent done a full check) of their star alliance partners e.g. virgin, singapore airlines etc.

just look for flights on the air canada website e.g. MEL SYD - and virgin will show up. or SIN - anywhere, and Singapore airlines will show up; on air canada website.

this is similar to qantas as well, you can use qantas points to book on oneworld partners like Emirates and Malaysian Airlines - via the qantas website.

                        • @lawyerz: Thank you, just checked and it's a bit confusing. I could find Mel-Perth via VA. But I was trying to get a San Francisco to Melbourne non stop via United, but all of the flights from US go stop at Vancouver, Sydney and then Melbourne. Such a pain!

              • +1

@mckellad1: Link says velocity points not qff.

        • +1

          Thanks for putting this together.
I would also note that (for NAB and ANZ for example), most of the velocity and qantas point earning cards (within each institution) are recognised as separate programs and have their own separate 12-18 month waiting periods.
Also, the Citi and Virgin Money cards have no formal waiting periods. You can apply multiple times within 12 months, within reason.

        • -1

HSBC 1.5 QFF pts per $1 spend and no annual fee for first year.

          • +1

@yoyobananas: I think most people inquiring about best bonus points offers, rather then points earning rate.

This one's still not too bad in terms of points per dollar
60,000 points plus Qantas themselves throw in a bonus 20,000 points if you sign up to a new point earning card (12 month period) so depends if you're eligible you could either score 60k or 80k.

The card itself is 119 + 75 fee for choosing the Qantas variant of the altitude card.

But if you're already a Westpac customer you can get the fee down to 49. (This doesn't even require that you are banking with them, just have access to their online banking platform to log in to get the special link - last time I banked with Westpac was 2 years ago, but my login details were still valid so I got the offer.)

Ultimately it worked out to 80k points for $124 which is pretty decent value in the current market.

    • You can downgrade the card to get a pro rata refund and only the downgraded cards ($99) annual fee.

      • yeah reading alot of places are putting a stop to pro-rata refunds recently including NAB, i wouldn't risk it if that was your primary goal.

A friend of mine did this a few days ago with no issue.

          • @Autonomic: That might make this card viable.

          • @Autonomic: does the downgrade card result in another credit check?

              • @adrianhughes1998: amazing, do you know whats the minimum limit for this card? I can't find it anywhere

                • @ozbargainerlife1: The one you did as OP cos 70k points and such a low spend to meet, would be $6000. If you're talking about downgrading it would be whatever card you went to, so could be $1000, could be $3000.

Doesn't matter because you're after the cheap annual fee, if they're already charged you the $350 then they'll pay you back the difference etc. I've done it a few times with cards over the years, YMMV cos it's up to the bank themselves.

                  • @adrianhughes1998: Did you downgrade after meeting the point spend but before actually receiving the points or after you got your points?

It would be a reminiscent deal of 100k+ bonus deals from years ago signing up for a Titanium, scoring 150k then downgrading to the Everyday's $99af

          • @Autonomic: What's a good reason/excuse to use when they ask why you want to downgrade? Just trying to avoid going in circles like the citibank ready credit offer where they keep trying to convince you to stay and remain on that product.

            • @vawiyoci: I haven't done it. Just say you don't need the features.

      • So you do this after receiving points right?
And I assume you still get to keep "all" points? Or would they still deduct it out of your account?

    • Hey that's me!

  • That Annual Fee is trashhhhhhhhh

  • +4

I've been pointhacking for nearly 3 years now and close to 1million QFF points as a result of getting these bonuses.
I pay roughly $1500 in annual fees per year across 7 cards (Amex, ANZ, CBA, NAB, Westpac, Qantas Money, St George), and accumulate minimum 400k QFF points a year via bonuses only.
This isn't including what is earned via the mandatory spend + personal expenses on top of that.

    My valuation is this:
    A domestic return flight via Qantas is roughly $250 AUD (which is my most common use case);
    - Sure, sometimes you get a sneaky Jetstar deal for $50 return but they are usually not during peak season and have a restricted travel window
Redeeming the same flight using points is around 16000 points + ~$50 tax, or around 24000 points if you cover the tax via points.

Yes, I agree that $349 is quite a high annual fee.
But in my calculations, paying $349 for a minimum ~$600-700 value of flights in points is worth it. (this is if domestic travel is your only use case)

Bear in mind that points increase in value when redeeming for international flights, especially if you find business/first class.
E.g. Sydney to London return in Business Class is around 280k points - in cash, those flights surely cost more than $1400 (not including flight tax)

    Happy to hear others' opinions.

    • I agree 100% - my goal is to get as many points as possible, sometimes I have to avoid the St George/BOM cards since they reject me - though no other bank does (go figure). The annual fees don't bother me at all as long as as it's at least 60k points (the higher the better though).

Mine are used solely for Business/First class flights - the only way this happens is by booking WELL in advance or last minute (and non-peak travel times otherwise). The value that 70k points gets me is far greater than $395 when i'm adding it to the pool (and alays classic reward bookings, not that points plus trash).

The only downside is that there's not as much availability these days and when there is, its generally Emirates that do have high fees. But hey, beats economy which I haven't done long haul in 7+ years.

      • But hey, beats economy which I haven't done long haul in 7+ years.

yeah once you start flying J and F it's hard to go back.

        • agree.

        • It's hard when certain international routes you would prefer to take direct eg Bali don't really have the full service lie flight business class lol. But 6 hours is about the crossover point anyway imo.

    • Do QFF points expire?
      Do Velocity points expire?
Do you also get lounge access etc?

      • points expiry 18 months if no activity. lounges vary by card

      • Qantas Points - 18 months.
        Velocity Points - 24 months.

  • This is from BOM

    Existing customer exclusive offer
80,000 bonus Qantas Points when you spend $6k or more on eligible purchases in the first 90 days from card approval>.
A reduced first year card fee of $139~ (reverts to $295).

    • Note once you've logged in you get to see that

    • higher limit though

  • I can't find minimum limit for this card

EDIT: its $6000 as per points hack

  • Yep its $6000 min.

Anyone know if we close the card they prorata the annual fee? Thanks

    • Not automatically, but it is always worth calling to ask.

NAB seems to allow $100 refunds without too much difficulty (though you might need to try calling more than once), and amounts over $100 can be considered. Presumably there should be similar consideration for all of the NAB-provided brands such as Qantas Money.

  • Hmmn 100k is decent, but man that fee is wild
