28 Degrees - New $8 Monthly Fee (Effective 17/9/24). Alternatives?

Hey all,

Just got an email about the 28 Degrees Mastercard introducing a new monthly card fee of $8 per month, which is quite steep as I only use it for travel and YouTube Argentina.

Any other recommendations for alternatives?

        • Yep, I actually applied for this a month or two ago and they wanted way more in the way of documents than they had initially said and I just cbf continuing. Now 28 degrees goes and does this I wish I'd stuck it out.

Bendigo Bank Ready looks the pick with free travel insurance, 3k minimum limit
Bankwest Zero Platinum has a 6k minimum limit and no travel insurance.
ING Orange One Low Rate, no travel insurance, requires hoops (1k transfer and 5 transactions), 1k minimum limit

Any others worth considering (credit cards, not debit) ?

        • Those minimum limit are huge. I only have $500 limit with latitude.

I also have 16k with Citibank and 15k with st george so I can't really go higher

          • +1

@Homr: I'm curious what you use the card for with a $500 limit…

No technology, no travel… what else only fits in $500?

            • +3

@samfisher5986: Aliexpress purchases.. I pretty much use my card for that so I don't get currency conversion.

            • @samfisher5986: yeh what @cycleri3 said.

I dont use the card all the time, but its there when I need it

        • Just wondering if both Bendigo and Bankwest allow you to top up in order to pay above the limit without any transactional fees?

    • +1

Nice idea, but Bendigo application process is problematic, tiresome, restrictive and arduous.
I tried, and got rejected, after a lot of mucking about and some weird assumptions about affordability.
      Good luck to anyone applying.

      • I have a Bendigo branch in my suburb, so I applied my Ready Card through them. It took a bit time, because they asked for all sort of documents. But the staff was friendly, and they did not have a queue in their branch, so quick.
Once they approved it, everything is smooth.
I applied B card because my 28 degrees card was hacked 2 years ago.

I just want a $0 annual fee credit card. Any feedback on Coles Mastercard? vs the Bendigo Bank one commented above?

    • +12

International Transaction Fee 3.00% on all Retail Purchases and Cash Advances.

      No thanks.

If you apply for an Orange One Low Rate Credit Card and are approved for a credit limit of $6,000 or more, you will receive an Orange One Low Rate Platinum card with access to complimentary international travel insurance. Fees and charges are the same for both Orange One Low Rate Classic and Low Rate Platinum.

To me, only downside compared to Bendigo is the $10 fee for an additional card.

      • +1

$1000 deposit into connected account and 5 transactions per month JUST to receive no foreign transaction fees. HELL NO!

        • +1

Automate the deposit and withdrawal transaction from your regular offset account. Not that hard to tap 5 $1 transactions at Colesworths once a month. But alright if that’s too much work for a card with no annual fee, no international transaction fee and travel insurance.

          • @soan papdi: Its probably even harder than that, if its the same rules as the savings account. The balance also needs to increase by $1000 from month to month.

            • +1

@blkcar: It’s not. The credit card is linked to a transaction account, not saver.

The balance also needs to increase by $1000 from month to month.

False. Not applicable to the txn account.

6 Months Free Uber One with Latitude Mastercard -

will have to use this credti card to get uber one offers.

      • +6

You need to have the card selected, but if you happen to have ubereats gift card that can cover the entire purchase, then there is no charge to the card 😏

      • correct. but codexd way is also good to overcome

      • Unfortunately, the offer you're trying to claim will expire before your current offer ends.

    • +1

Wow didn't realise I could claim it again. Perfect timing because my last 6 months free expires soon.

      Uber One
6 months free thanks to Mastercard until Saturday, 17 August, 2024

6 months free from Mastercard starts on 17 Aug, 2024

      • Must be from different mastercard, i ahve the same exact dates like yours. One from citi one from Latitude

    • +1

Tips like these are why I come to ozb, thanks dude. My Prime subscription trial was about to expire - now I have another 3 months. Awesome

    • Anyone know if you can pick a start date for the 3GB free data? Heading OS in December and was going to use it then. But with fees being introduced, I'll be cancelling this card before then.

Not sure if I could set a date to activate the data plan….

      • I used it in June and I think you've got a week or two to start the SIM, definitely won't hold off to December. Still, may as well claim the eSIM now and then just recharge it in December when you do travel.

I found it really good in the US, even though all my data was being routed through Dallas.

      • Here's from the FAQ:
Will the Starter Pack expire if I don't activate after redemption? Yes, the Flexiroam Starter Pack expires if it is not activated within 6 months of redemption.

    • Cool, the Amazon offer is good! thanks

    • checked all 3 and i have claimed them all last year lol

    • Yep went and claimed all of this when I saw the post title. Good while it lasted.

    • For Uber One, do we activate 6 months free with 28 global, cancel 28 global, add a new payment method in Uber One and keep the 6 months free?

    • +2

Just a note that it's not much point claiming the Uber one if you're going to cancel the card.
Uber requires you to use the MasterCard associated with the promo as a payment method to get Uber one benefits.

        • The terms say Mastercard is funding the monthly fee.

If your Mastercard is no longer active - which Mastercard will know - they will not fund the monthly fee, and it will get disabled like that other Amazon Prime promo some time back.

          • +2

@odysseus: I did that exact thing back in September last year.

I got a CBA credit card and got my 6 months free Uber one. I closed the account after getting introductory offer and it did not cancel my Uber one.

I only use cheap gift cards either from ShopBack or prezzee or Amazon. The card never got charged since gift card covered the entire order.

            • @CodeXD: Good to hear. Practice doesn't always align with what is stated :-)

  • Thanks for info @ifcw

  • +2

Just confirming I'm not misunderstanding it… I currently spend more than $1000 each month on the card, so the $10 credit will offset the $8 fee?

Ugh, just realised that it's not a credit, it's an "e-gift card", not worth it for the muck around bleh.

    • Yeah, sort of 1% back, better use Hsbc 2% rebate for up to $100 tap transactions

  • +8

damn. the only hassle is updating my card detail on youtube premium.

    • +5

hmm it was easy. no vpn required to update to new card.

      • +1

What new card did you update it to? Looking for a new no international transaction fee card specifically for youtube premium and buying Turkish netflix gift card from turgame haha

        • +4

          Bankwest.

      • +1

Good to know. Seeing your comment reminded me that it's got my Argentina Youtube sub on it so will need to shift that when I ditch the card.

      • Same, but let's see if the next payment actually goes through.

        • worked for me. $5.35 for family.

      • could you give me a step by step instructions?
I don't know how to start, and confused when I tried to google. I think my YTpremium is in India.
        Many thanks.

        • We're more interested in the step by step instruction to get Indian YT premium with overseas visa/master card.

The shoppers/price drop protection is well worth it to keep the card even when they closed the ATM loophole.

      • what was the ATM loophole?

        • +1

People were bpaying money to 28D card over their credit limit and withdrawing from ATM. Since account was in credit, there was no cash advance fee and people got the best exchange rate at the time of withdrawal.

      • Is the price drop protection being offered again? Unless you mean the grandfather plan one.

        • grandfather plan

"ozbargain license" is probably the cringiest thing i've read on this website

      • -6

It's a joke dude, obviously it doesn't exist.

The company has closed off many benefits over time (and continues to do so). I don't know why anyone would stick with them.

        • What? Who the hell did i transfer $50 to when i "applied" for it?????????

  • +19

End of an era; what lousy news. I've had this card since 2009 when it was branded Wizard Clear Advantage.

$96 annual fee and 28% interest is not even remotely competitive. Agreed that it seems like they intend to discontinue the product and are just grubbing some gotcha fees out of anyone not paying attention to the change.

    RIP wizard.

    • +1

Doubt they woulda bothered with the gift card and what not if killing it was the plan.

Most likely not profitable so turning it into something else with the same name.

    • +2

Same, had it since 2008 and it's been used quite a bit. Over the years I've seen it be sold by Wizard to GE Money, and then sold by GE Money to Latitude Financial - and somehow, all that time, they kept my goddamn driver's license scans and personal information on file (apparently illegally) from the 2008 application to Wizard, so it was lost in the breech last year. I needed to get my license reissued, etc, which Latitude reimbursed. I've only kept the card in order to make it easier to claim on the hopefully positive outcome of the class action that's slowly making its way through the court system.. but I'm not going to pay them for the privilege. Will be bailing now.

Regarding their future, I presume like you do, they're sqeezing the remaining customers and chasing off frugal customers (that're lower value to them) to see what they can recoup - but I don't think they'll kill the product. I think we'll see Latitude Financial sell off the credit card customers/service to yet another financial entity, it's worth more under a new brand as Latitude now has negative brand recognition.

  • +14

So is Price protection worth $96?

For me, yes, easily make $100+/year off full price purchase with cashback then price matching lowest price.

    • +1

Would be nice if there was a way to check how much of the shopper protection limit we have left, I bet most of us are nearing the lifetime limit by now.

      • You can call to find out (I believe a different call centre to the general card one so shouldn't have to wait in a queue of cancellers :)

I've kept track with a spreadsheet posted somewhere either on here or Whirlpool. Still have a considerable amount left and is the only reason I'll keep the card for now as on average claim back much more than the $96 a year. My biggest concern is it will start at $8, then start getting bumped up higher.

  • +3

Looks like they are changing it to a reward card? $10 gift card with $1000 monthly spent, at extra $8/month.

    • +4

      i probably spent $1000 a year lol

    • Under a new rewards program, you will be eligible for a $10 e-gift card every statement period from participating retailers when you spend $1,000 or more on eligible transactions in each statement period.

    • Should add the FAQ link to the post for those that haven't got the email yet.

There will be a rewards program of sorts partnered with EonX. $1000 spend per statement will get you $10 rewards which you can cash out for a gift card, or accumulate (with 18 month expiry) to cash out for a larger card later.

There is also new insurance included for damage/theft for 12 months from purchase, up to $1500 per claim/year and another for non-delivery/non-function online purchases (if tracking number was provided and seller hasn't refunded after 60 days)

    • +1

"eligible", probably only at places like Harvey Norman.

  • Wonder how the fee will work with shoppers protection insurance premiums (charged as 1% of the closing balance).
The FAQ states for the $8 monthly fee: "The fee will form part of your closing balance". If your balance was $0 prior to the $8 fee, will you be charged 1% of the $8 (8 cents)?

I asked online chat and they couldn't give me a straight answer and deferred me to call their insurance team (haven't done so yet).

    • If you are paying off your balance before the statement closes to avoid the 1% fee, just overpay $8 to cover the monthly fee I assume (you can overpay up to $200 via the free online transfer)

      • Didn’t know that you can overpay by up to $200, I always thought it was $0 and system would not accept payments in excess of the outstanding balance!!

        • It's handy for those pending transactions that tick over just when the statement closes. I believe you can overpay more via Bpay but of course you'll get hit with the fee.

  • +1

Wow, will definitely be closing (been a customer since 2011). Should probably get a rewards card instead as I already have ING for 0% international txn fee. At least my BMW Amex is still going strong 😂

  • +1

i haven't received this email yet…. is this across the board>

still might be worthwhile for the shoppers protection.

  • -1

How can a card have an annual fee and a monthly fee?

    • +3

It is $8 monthly fee, which equates to $96 per year

Just makes it easier to compare against cards that have annual fee to bring it all to the same period

  • +8

End of an era. I've had this card for over 10 years I think. It was a good run while it lasted.
Kinda glad though, my card got compromised twice this year. Their fraud prevention must be terrible.

  • +1

Echoing the sentiments of everyone else, had this card since 2013, will be canceling after my NZ trip which thankfully is at the end of August.

  • +2

I've gotten thousands back this year from the protection insurances alone. I'll probably keep it till they boot me from the insurance.

    • Which items did you claim it on? And what was the price difference?

      • +1

Stuff I bought and damaged. A tip for finding price protection is to search on google and go through to the last pages and sometimes there will be .com.au pages selling for crazy prices that meet the requirements for price protection.

        • ok just so I understand it, as I haven't used my card except for occasional overseas online purchases and overseas travel….

You buy goods in Australia , e.g. from Myer or any mainstream shop, then if you find it advertised online for cheaper, you notify 28'D and they refund you the difference?

And if the item gets damaged they give you full compensation?

          • @eckorock: As long as you have the shoppers protection insurances. Better of reading the PDS or documents you were emailed.

            • @frondono: OK sweet,
is it something that was grandfathered into an old agreement?

  • +8

Bunch of w**kers! Isn't this the mob that can't even safeguard their own customer data? Hmmm… Yep!

    From their website:

"…These were customers and applicants in Australia and New Zealand who had one or more of the following compromised:

    • Approximately 7.9 million driver licence numbers and some but not necessarily all of: name, address, telephone and date of birth

    • Approximately 103,000 copies of driver licences or passports

    • Approximately 53,000 passport numbers

    • Less than 100 monthly account statements

    • Income and expense information used to assess approximately 900,000 loan applications, including approximately 308,000 bank account numbers (but not passwords) for the disbursement of funds and approximately 143,000 credit card or credit card account numbers (but not card expiry or 3-digit CVC) for debt consolidation, the overwhelming majority of which are expired or closed…"

    Count me cancelling.

  • I haven't got this email yet, Does that mean this email is only applicable to people on sign-in for purchase protection? If that is the case, there is NO alternative to a reward credit card like Amex. Look like they want to kill the product, costing them too much. So for everyone else, just use as normal ?
