warning : there is a known issue with degradation on Intel CPUs. buy at your own risk. see https://www.theverge.com/2024/7/26/24206529/intel-13th-14th-… and various youtubers who have discussed this extensively.

Acer has both 2023 and 2024 version so make sure you specify the year when looking at reviews because the model name is the same. some reviews are with the 4060 and not 4070 version

  • From what i've briefly read, i guess is intel releases the microcode update and its applied, it should be fine for new cpu's? i guess its the the people who has been using them for the last few years will have major degradation.

    • +1

But they haven't actually released the code yet. And so we don't know if it will actually hinder performance or not.

Largely for most people I doubt it would matter much, but in saying that a laptop environment is much more likely to experience the worst case scenarios simply due to the form factor and typically higher running temperatures.

    • +2

Unfortunately there is no guarantee that microcode will fix anything because Intel has not been completely forthcoming with exactly what the problem is. They have changed their story a few times for a problem that has been there since the launch of 13th gen. They a currently "investigating" the issues on laptop, because they believe it's different compared to desktop, even though they are based on the same architecture.

    • Bear in mind i9s are the parts most affected by these voltage and instability issues.

    • If it was as simple as a microcode update the issue would have already been fixed, what about the oxidation issue?

  • +1

Warning to potential buyers. I own a HP Omen with 13900HX and I have had instability from Day 1 that I have been unable to diagnose. It may very well be part of the Intel scandal or it could be completely unrelated.

    • +1

IIRC its affecting all intel 13th and 14th gen cpus which have TDPs higher 65W so it will in fact affect laptop CPUs as well..

  • -1

If you have a mobile 13th or 14th Gen Intel CPU, or any other generation of Intel CPU (e.g. Intel Core Ultra (Meteor Lake), 12th Gen (Alder Lake), 11th Gen (Rocket Lake) or any other generation of Intel CPU, Intel says these CPUs are not affected.

  • Does anyone use this Latitude finance Harvey Norman offer? I cant believe it, just working out the monthly fees, over 48 months it works out equivalent to 25% interest, that's border line criminal.

    • -1

      It's 5.56% p.a for 4 years.

      • +1

        $2198 sale price
Latitude interest free with $10.95 monthly fee.
        Total over 48 months = $2723.60
        = 25%
Doesn't matter how you sugar coat it, your paying an extra 25%
Not having a go at anyone, but companies like Latatude need to be put out of business, this is criminal charging 30% interest on any outstanding balance & anyone taking up on these offers are straight up stupid.

        • Interest is normally counted on an annual basis. I agree you are paying a interest but that is no difference to any other loan. In actual fact the interest rate is quite low.

Counting interest as the total payments over 4 years is ok, but what are you comparing it to? It's a lower interest rate than a home loan.

        • so is that in simple terms 6.25% per year?
aren't credit cards 20% per year?

    • wait till this guy finds out how much interest is paid on an average home loan

  • Would the Lenovo Legion Slim 5 with the Ryzen 7 be a better deal?

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/lenovo-legion-slim-5-15-5…

currently $2399 at JB and Lenovo

    • Honestly, yes.

AMD have crushed it with laptop cpus this generation and there is the added bonus there aren't any voltage issues like intel

    • +2

Better off getting it direct from Lenovo, albeit a 6 week wait for delivery. there's a link on Jarrod's website for that same model. direct from Lenovo gives you 32GB RAM (2 x 16GB) instead of 1x16 from JB Hifi. and for the same price too.

    • without considering Intel CPU issue
I'd imagine the GPU in Lenovo is underpowered compared to this one?

  • -1

Do you have the list of processor issues? Is it including with intel i7?

  • I bought this exact model for $1800 from Harvey Norman 2-3 weeks ago. It is a powerful laptop but be aware that its battery doesn't last long, around 3 hours or so. I know it is not design to work long hours but I thought I would mention.

    • +3

hmm I was wrong. Same spec but GPU was 4060. Never reply to a post before morning coffee. :)

  • I also have this laptop and it is a solid workhorse. I use it for Photoshop and Illustrator as well as some gaming sporadically. Awesome for design work and I like the 16" screen. It's a slightly boxy shape but I definitely prefer it to my old 17 and 15s. Beauty of Australian warranty's is if you do wind up with the CPU issues just claim under warranty.

  • I wouldn't touch Acer based on their going rate of build quality and lack of support.
I wouldn't touch Intel based on their recent issues.

This is a combo to avoid.

  • What are peoples thoughts on Metabox? I had one a long time ago and thought it was fine. https://www.metabox.com.au/store/b518/Metabox-Alpha-VX-V360E…
