Acer Nitro V 16" Gaming Laptop Ryzen 5 16GB/1TB RTX4050 $1097 + Delivery ($0 to Metro/ C&C/ In-Store/ OnePass) @ Officeworks

340

It’s been a while since I saw an RTX4050 laptop around $1000 so just thought to share in in case anyone out there is looking for one.

Edit: here is a fairly detailed review of an Acer Nitro V 4050 by JarrodsTech on YT (not sure if it is exactly the same model but should be very similar): https://youtu.be/o6lWCM6lUaQ?si=H2i75wcWfGscTciN

  • Good find. These haven't been in stock for ages.

Slightly updated with 8th gen Ryzens.

  • Wow amd with tb4??
Is this good? I can get TRS on this

    • Added a detailed review link in description, if you’re travelling before Black Friday and Boxing Day deals in November /December this should be a good deal.

      • hey OP that's not the same model, worth pointing out that a big difference is the quality of the display. that youtube review from Jarrod you linked shows 61% SRGB and 300 nits, this Acer Nitro V 16 is >= 300 nits and 100% SRGB, see the review i posted in my other comment

        • I mentioned in the description it might not be exact same model but similar

    • +2

      USB 4

  • Up to 4.5 hours battery.

Is this the norm with gaming laptops? It's a good price but I do need more battery life than that.

    • i heard amd is good with battery but im no expert

    • +6

It's not going to be anywhere near 4.5 hours when you're playing the latest games.

    • +1

For non-arm laptops, especially gaming laptops I think 6-7hrs is considered pretty good AFAIR. Added a detailed review video link with battery comparison in the description.

That being said you won’t be playing any heavy AAA gaming while any gaming laptop is running on battery (fps drops heavily when GPU is limited to battery power)

      • +2

1000% agree, ive got a gaming laptop and it pulls maximum watts from the brick and also pulls from the battery!

After a good gaming session my laptop is flat! 🤣

    • +1

I'm not sure where OW is getting 4.5hrs battery, because it's not even Acer's official numbers. Acer is quoting 7hrs on a 59wH battery.

    • gaming laptops can run out of battery in minutes when playing heavy games. battery life is not something you can rely on, with these machines which are optimised for POWAH and FPS! Keep it plugged while you frag.

    • Almost entirely dependant on what you do. Gaming will kill the battery in under an hour, website browsing could last 6hrs+, just depends on how low idle power usage can get.

My experience is that Windows is awfully random about how much power it uses at any given time :/

  • +1

    here's a fairly positive review: https://laptopmedia.com/au/review/acer-nitro-v-16-anv16-41-r…

USB 4, G-Sync, HDMI 2.1, good display (100% SRGB, 165hz, G-sync optimus, 16:10 aspect ratio), looks like a good deal

don't confuse this with other similar name models like Nitro 16 and Nitro V

but note that there's 2 bad reviews on the Ryzen 7 version of this laptop warning about bad firmware: https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/acer-nitro…

    • @k2k8k5 on your link, it says
40 Gbps USB4 port with DisplayPort and 65W charging capabilities
is that correct/possible to charge this with 65w charger?

      • yes. see page 18 of the manual

        https://global-download.acer.com/GDFiles/Document/User%20Man…

        • USB 3.2 Gen 2 with transfer speeds up to 40 Gbps.
        • Supports DisplayPort™ audio/video output.
        • Compatible with USB 4 port.
        • Delivers up to 3 A at 5 V DC for USB charging.
        • DC-in: requires power adapter or power source providing 65 W at 20 V.

        • @k2k8k5 wow interesting because the power brick is 135W so i guess it will run at half power ie not using the GPU etc ?

          • +1

@CyberMurning: yea it will be very throttled in terms of performance so i dont suggest you use it regularly maybe only if you forget the power brick. still it is a nice to have feature. not sure whether it disables the GPU entirely or just runs both CPU and GPU at very low TDP restriction

            • @k2k8k5: but all those wattage can be adjusted on the fly from acer software, right? like we can turn off external GPU for example.. or adjust the TDP of the 4050s, and maybe can we reduce the refresh rate from 165 to 60 only for example for few hours to save battery?

              • @CyberMurning: hey mate i think you can use the performance modes they usually have a quiet, balanced and ultra turbo boost option that can help reduce the power draw. yes the refresh rate of the display you can definitely reduce it

                • @k2k8k5: thanks i just want to get the maximum battery like maybe 8-9hrs watching mkv movies (offline) on the flight! (well yeah not nonstop but including in the airport, etc just to be safe)

  • Intel 13th gen alternative but with 1080p screen.

    $959.20

    • Hmm i feel the officework is better

      • I agree.

I prefer AMD and 1920 by 1200 is nice.

    • +10

I would stay away from Intel 13th and 14th gen CPUs, due to issues with them slowly dying. Intel won't give a straight answer regarding laptops. But leaks indicate that laptops are also affected in addition to desktop.

      https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/cpus/dev-reports-…

      • wow truly shocked !

      • Isn't that issue reported for desktop/server level high powered, overclocked CPUs?

        • +1

The official stance is that it effects all 13th and 14th gen desktop CPUs from 65w and up.

Unfortunately Intel won't confirm or deny an issue with 13th and 14th gen mobile. They just say " they are investigating". Leaks say that mobile also has issues, because they are based on the same architecture as desktop.

This issue has been going for over a year and they have been blaming everyone else, until they got exposed in press.

"How many chips does Intel estimate are likely to be irreversibly impacted by these issues?

Intel Core 13th and 14th Generation desktop processors with 65W or higher base power – including K/KF/KS and 65W non-K variants…"

          https://www.theverge.com/2024/7/26/24206529/intel-13th-14th-…

          • @shellshocked: If thats true laptops should be safe, even the GPU barely gets 65W on budget laptops

          • @shellshocked: I'd say most of their laptop cpus will be ok, only the desktop replacement level cpus like 13900HX may have these issues and that's a maybe… Would be surprised if the ring bus on lower wattage cpus can't handle the boosting/voltage draw that's likely causing the degradation.

            • @scud70: If you want to take the risk go ahead. I don't want to go through the possible hassle of multiple RMAs that people are experiencing due to having faulty Intel chips.

              • @shellshocked: Not sure what data you have that others don't on the laptop sku's and RMAs but by no means did I say buy the desktop 13/14th gen CPUs or machines that have them.

I have all AMD machines at home so nothing to do with defending intels stupidity here but I also run an IT team and we have many hundreds of laptops quite a lot with 13th gen and we've had no issues, my Dell laptop is a 13th gen and it's been fine for the last year or so… I was just pointing out its unlikely due to what is believed to be the issue that low power laptop cpus will be affected.

I definitely wouldn't recommend Intel desktop cpus to friends or family at this point in time until we know more and even then it's better safe than sorry in that space.

On the deal? We've had it on our site for almost a week already ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

On the laptop itself? It's the cheapest RTX 4050 laptop we've listed in Australia so far. Nitro series is usually ok from our testing for a low/mid option, but we haven't tested the Nitro V. Surprised it has a newer 2024 CPU too (though they are still Zen 4 based like 2023 models). Also still 16gb RAM, many cheapest deals dip down to 8gb.

        • thanks. i have subbed to your website now

        • Hi Jarrod, Thanks for your video comparison of new Lenovo LOQ with Intel A530M 4GB vs 6GB RTX3050.

Would you please consider making a comparison between Intel A530M 4GB vs 4GB RTX2050?
Looks like somehow new laptops are being manufactured with RTX 2050s? (I thought they are phased out but so many budget laptops for sale in Australian market is rocking RTX2050?)

Also it would be great if you could compare a 6GB A530M vs 6GB RTX3050 when such laptops become available?

It would be great to see another review and comparison of Intel Arc after recent driver updates!

          • +1

@tjoy: Hmm I don't have the right stuff to do the comparison fairly, at least without buying another laptop, as my 2050 has the 11400H CPU while my A530M has the 12450HX.

I'll think about it, I see you can get the LOQ with 2050+12450HX for about $1000.

        • love your vids jarrod (and website). very helpful

          • @Gustybreeze: Cheers!

            • @JarrodsTech: Hey Jarrod, love your reviews. I have been following your site for a few months now. Might bite the bullet and get this deal.

Would it be worth the extra $200 for the Ryzen 7 (R7-8845HS) model to futureproof the machine as this has 2 more cores and performs approximately 25% faster on multicore processing. Although at a lower clock speed?

              $1297 at OW

              https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/acer-nitro…

Hard to decide, guess you can't upgrade the CPU. Leaning towards the R7

              • +1

@351pwr: I don't think the extra 2 cores are worth $200, in gaming the FPS boost wouldn't be much vs the 18% higher cost, but maybe if you're doing multicore work then it might be worth it to you.

        • So is the Nitro reliable? I've been looking at this deal for my kid because of the price point but there's so much stuff out there about Nitros with screen issues, heat issues (heat from keyboard affecting the screen when closed issues) and just breaking apart.
It puts me off, even tho the ryzen and the 4050 and the 1tb are really attractive (and LOQs are hard to find at this price point now)
Are Nitro a product plagued with problems? Or are there just a few unlucky people in the forums? or are some people just punishing their machine?

          • @Zetomenon: Not aware of any issues with Nitro series.

      • similar but your link has more ports. if this OW model has that kind of ports i will get it :D - 2 usb C at the back!

  • Some similar model comes with sdcard reader and 2 usb c ! Not this one…

  • Specs for similar model (just RAM/SSD different?): https://store.acer.com/en-us/nitro-v-16-gaming-laptop-anv16-…

    • Note this is the US store, so prices are in USD (I know you're only referring to specs)

  • But isn't V series is below their own Nitro 16 non V series?

  • Are these RAMs up gradable?

  • +2

I bought this laptop last year for my 10yo son. (slightly diff specs), but the screen is the same. Better than average build for the cheaper acer gaming laptops. Unusually good screen for this price. It is heavy but perfect for at home gaming, where you want them out in a family area so you can keep an eye on them.

Way cheaper than my Lenovo Legion and it even has Optimus (looking at you Lenovo)

    • +2

10yo nowadays are getting all the good goodies i remember my first nokia only when i turned 18yo and bought with half of my saving from working part time and then parents helped with the other half

  • Just wondering if keyboard backlight colors can be changed to different regions like this model from 12 months ago as the pic shows orange only.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/795951

    • That page you linked, thats nitro 16 this is nitro v 16 budget version of nitro

  • The Acer Nitro V 16" Gaming Laptop Ryzen 7 8845HS is $200 more but both reviews on officeworks had screen issues.

  • +3

Had the Nitro 16 with Ryzen 7640 and 4050 from a previous deal via OW. It lasted around 8 months for my son, basically using it more for Roblox than any real heavy gaming.
Stopped powering on. Acer support was painful, so I took it back to OW. Took a month to get back…
Lasted 24 hours before completely dead
Reqd and given a refund from OW

Hope others have better luck with Acer gaming laptops. Am typing this on this a Acer 14 ryzen swift go 7640u that seems to be holding up OK after 6 months though.

    YMMV!

    • I've always had bad luck with gaming laptops in the past; they worked fine initially but tended to fail after a year or so. I'm currently using the same laptop model as you, but with the 8645HS processor. It's decent for some older games, and it excels at Xbox cloud gaming. I've learned to take out that extra cover fee so no one no issues when it comes to replacing failed hardware.

      • Make me worry to upgrade my 5 years intel gen 9 with 1050ti (msi). Never had a single issue

        • Im just cursed when it comes to buying technology lol. If your laptop is working fine, don't update unless it's broke, I say.

          • @Aliensf: Yeah. Im now researching if upgrading ram from 16 to 32gb will help with my usage/freeze issues

    • Just had my Nitro 5 die too - won't power on either. Got it from here originally via the last deal.

      • Is yours the intel or amd version?

    • similar story for my 3 month old acer swift go 14 speaker had a problem sent it in through OW for repair. Acer dicked around for 4 weeks and then pushed OW to request a refund.

      • Intel swift go or amd?

        • AMD - it was a speaker issue so unrelated to the cpu ?
Apparently Acer australia don't stock the parts for it and have to get it imported or something

  • Do these have thunderbolt 4?

  • +2

This is a decent deal, but just a heads up not to refer to Nitro 16 reviews for accurate information. This is the newer, cheaper, Nitro V 16. I'm not sure what has been downgraded other than what I can see in spec and in photos, but what I know is they will perform worse in gaming.

    Compared to the Nitro 16 of the similar Ryzen 5/RTX 4050 spec;

The 8645HS is direct rebadge of the 7640HS. Same base/boost clocks, same Zen 4 arch, same cache etc. Potentially lower standard TDP on the 8645HS in the Nitro V 16 compared to the older Nitro 16. Either way identical performance at the same TDP with the same RAM config etc in benchmarks, because it's a rebadge…per Notebook check: https://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Ryzen-5-8645HS-Processor-B…

Battery in the 16 is 90whr, V 16 is 57whr. Should be gaming plugged in anyway, but when off charge and doing basic tasks the older 16 will last longer.

16 has an extra USB-A and an extra USB-C over the V 16. Both have USB4 via USB-C.

The Nitro V 16 has been heavily nerfed in the cooling department.
Nitro 16 has RTX 4050 with 140W TGP. Nitro V 16 has RTX 4050 with 55W TGP and 30W "dynamic boost" (max potential of 85W if the power delivery/cooling keeps up). I'd hazard a guess it has a smaller PSU to suit but I can't find this for sure.

Nitro 16 cooling; 2 big fans. Bigger more open vents on the bottom shell. 4 longer heatpipes making much more contact with the chips and the heatsinks. Liquid metal from the factory, per Acer marketing.

Nitro V 16 cooling; 1 big 1 smaller fan. Smaller vents on the bottom shell, restricting flow and alluding to smaller fan. 3 much shorter heatpipes with much less surface contact to the heatsinks/chips. No mention of liquid metal in Acer marketing.

Pics comparing cooling config here: https://postimg.cc/gallery/5J8XdDz

Dunno exactly how big a difference it makes in gaming, but it won't be nothing and it will likely be louder either way.
