  • any idea which models are tactile (not too clicky)

    • Epomaker are usually pretty good with their specs, Linear or Tactile should be noted along with Clicky but they're far less common.

I've got the Epomaker x Feker Galaxy80 which is Linear Feker switches, sounds like mahjong tiles and I love it lol

    • Can try any with the brown switches. They sell a TH80 with browns which I am using at the moment. Its currently on sale for $82.

      • +1

Only difference worth noting is that the model linked has a aluminum frame whereas the TH80 is plastic. I actually can't figure out what switches the linked V75 comes with ?

        • It says Matte in the post, but yeah I did find it odd that it didnt mention the keyswitch details in the amazon listing. I ordered the 87% and it does state Matte in that listing.

          • @Stinger au: Ohh right I completely missed that! I'm temped to order one after watching some reviews

          • @Stinger au: Damn. I thought matte is a color/texture

        • Yeh it's CIDOO's own switch and that's what they've called it for some reason. It's a nice switch though if you like linears.

          • @bleemo: what do they call tactile?

            • @Brakus: I just did a search on CIDOOs website and it looks like they don't do a tactile. Only linears.

      • Any other recommendations for brown switch equivalent that looks retro with a knob? I can’t figure out which switch is which

I recently got this board ilovbee b87 during the prime day deals for $64 ish and absolutely love typing on it. Probably the best pre-built keyboard I've experienced for the price and it gives off a retro-ish feel with the colour scheme. It has a "leaf-spring gasket" which apparently is not common for this price and mostly reserved for premium boards and supports VIA. It feels grounded and feels solid with some heft to it. It has screws for easy opening and modding. Keycaps are pbt doubleshot. So much value on this board looking past the generic cringy sounding brand name.

Here's a video of MechWhisper showcasing the typing sound. The typing you hear from the video is an actual representation of the typing sound in person - pure, marbly goodness.

@jerdp: That MechWhisper video is quite cool. I appreciate just the text, no voice over.

I’m wondering what modding people do on these? Change key caps? Dunno what else you could/would do.

I still have my trusty old CM Stealth with brown switches. I guess other than to go wireless, I don’t have a reason to change. I do like the retro look on some of these though. Reminds me of my old C64.

Swap out the switches, stabilisers for better ones, add/remove foam, tape, force-break mod (doesn't seem to be needed for this type of mount), add weights.

              • +1

                @CrispyChrispy: Thanks 🙂

              • @CrispyChrispy: Force break mod is really for any keyboards that sounds hollow and pingy (metal keyboards mainly as they can sometimes sound hollow).

By adding a layer of tape between the top and the bottom housing it reduces resonance and pinginess from the keyboard. Just mentioning this as Keychron keyboards supposedly benefit significantly (and they use gasket mounting)

      • this or keychron? I'm waiting for a Keychron sale.

        • I've also been waiting to try one out, but Keychron seem sales seem to be few and far between.

      • +1

I'd be negligent not to mention that the TH80 has a bad reputation in some circles due to pcb issues and a steady stream of users filing in and asking why random keys on their board does not work.

        • Hmm I have two and no issues so far, touch wood. I will have to say I bought another Epomaker (EP75? something model?) that I received severely bulged and was returned through Amazon.

          • @Stinger au: Lucky you purchased via Amazon then, given they've got a bit of a bad reputation in regards to customer service as well?

Along with being banned from Reddit for astro-turfing and starting a legal snafu with another company because they got beat to market on a board design they both licensed.

It's… not a great look. (They also appear to be in a bit of a fight with whomever writes their QMK firmware for boards too, given they're blocked from submitting more keyboards until they sort out getting the source code for the wireless parts contributed)

        • I decided to clean the keyboard and change the switches on my TH80 and F9 to F12 keys stopped working… extremely annoyed now…
Got to try and remap those keys to something else now.

          • @nekov: Try pulling the switches out and re-inserting the switches if you've done that while cleaning the switches. Sometimes bent pins on the switches can cause issues like one press registering entire row and more.

Doesn't hurt and more importantly, cost, to check (I had a keyboard that acted funky until I realised that bent pins were causing the issues with the entire row).

  • Gotta love the effort that these manufacturers put into choosing brand names.

They certainly do tick off all the buzzwords though.

  • Shout out to the 90s keyboards

Loved the build. Loved the matte switches. Loved the caps. Unfortunately, wireless started dying on me ~3months in. Same sort of QC problem with the V21 (the numpad). It's Amazon so returns will be easy but figured I'd still let people know.

VIA was also a bit jank.

    • Oh man, I've got the v21 and v65. Hopefully they're ok…bought off AliExpress too

    • Is this just with 2.4ghz? Are there any issues with cable or Bluetooth?

  • +3

for this prices, try Rainy75 from aliexpress.

  • Get the Ajazz ak820 pro from AliExpress for around $80. Nice thocc switches (Gift switches) and comes with a knob and lcd screen which can display GIFs

  • I've got this V75 and very happy with it, the switches and typing experience is very satisfying. Also got seperate numpad too.

  • Why do so many of these smaller % keyboards not have matching home/end keys? Maybe I'm the crazy one for using them so much while programming.

    • +1

I agree home/end always get left off, V75 has "home" and FN+HOME=END 👍

      • Good to know, thanks! I think that the key combination would break my muscle memory too badly though. Then again maybe the slightly different layout would have the same effect (vertical home/end/pigup/down instead of traditional horizonalish).

        • +1

tell me about it… some keyboards using FN+< as Home and FN+> as End.

I too, use Home and End a lot.

For 75% keyboards, best to go with Epomaker Aura75 (not Aula), Gamakay SN75 or Akko Monsgeek M1/M1W.

    • +1

It says VIA programmable, so you should be able to remap say the page up key to be end, and then make the page down key do both up and down using the FN key pretty easily. Being able to do that certainly works around some of the layout's drawbacks.

My biggest annoyance with this style is all the wasted space on the board. You should be able to fit 4 nav keys there in the first place!
