    Glass is best

    • +3

      Worst when it breaks

    • +3

Agree glass is safer so many products with harmful chemicals out there. However what is the point in the basket being made of glass when there are other components made of other toxic materials as it cant be 100% glass?

      • +4

As long as the non-stick Teflon isn't disintegrating into your food is it still considered unsafe, right?

        • I thought there was certain gases released from the Teflon too that made it unsafe - overheating?

          • @Wickadz: Yep, Teflon's harmless to ingest. The only time it's actually bad for you is when it's gassified and inhaled, which only happens above normal cooking temperatures.

So if you're not using it above 260 degrees or so, even if it's flaking off, you'll be fine.

Teflon is the lead paint of the cooking world.

        • +2

          Yes it's considered safe

PTFE/Teflon is chemically inert at temperatures below 260 degrees Celsius

          • @spaceflight: Its not considered safe by me so you could edit your comment to say its considered safe by you ;-)

          • @spaceflight: It’s the PFOS/PFOA in the product and not the actual PTFE is my understanding.

Seen this quite regularly around this price, so I wouldn't consider it much of a deal

    • +6

Cheapest on ozbargain has been $84.15 and that was October last year.

      • +1

It's listed as "was $89", 10% off is not much of a deal.

  • +1

never owned an air fryer, is this a good one? i prefer glass to plastic hence drawn to this one

    • Don't think there is a plastic, other than the outer shell… other brand mostly metal on the inside if thats what u mean.

    • +1

My wife loves it, the glass bowl also makes checking on the cooking progress a breeze.

We have owned one of the traditional styles previously and thought it was average.

    • Are you a big family? 6.5L is on the smaller side.

    • We just got this one, also bought it for the glass to avoid plastic. Our first air fryer and it’s great. The glass basket and metal tray just go straight in the dishwasher when you’re done!

  • +2

What's the mesh insert made out of?

    • Not plastic

    • +1

Metal. I’m guessing stainless steel as we’ve run it through the dishwasher and still looks brand new

  • +1

Looks good. Have an instant Vortex and the tray and basket itself has flaked. So annoying when we don't even put it in the dishwasher

    • Did you use paper towels to clean it

      Or scrub daddy?

      • Nope, just soft sponge. Some of the basket was because the tray scraped against it so whatever guess it doesn't touch our food but was pretty annoyed about the tray. I emailed Instant to find out what the coating was, they didn't answer directly and just sent me another. Same thing happened so mmyeah hope it doesn't end up giving me cancer since we're still using it lol

        • I had an Instant Vortex Mini and this happened to me as well.

I ended up getting this one and it is good except for the basket being heavier and the lack of warm up time. Also I suspect that the warm up time is greater due to the basket not being made of aluminum. The element takes a few minutes to click off.

  • +1

    Won’t ship to NT

  • +1

I have this one, we ended up removing the black attachments to the glass bowl and now just chuck it in the dishwasher. Works very well!

  • I was looking at this on Amazon. I want something more safer than plastic

    • Agreed, though usually it’s a non stick surface basket not plastic. I just wonder if the mesh in the glass bowl on this model also has the same nonstick coating anyway.

    • Plastic is safer than glass as plastic will not shatter into sharp pieces.

      • Plastic is so prevalent and persistent we all have toxic micro plastic contamination in our bodies now. Not just our stomachs, our blood and organs too. Heart surgeons have now looked for and found it in hearts. We all love the convenience and low cost of plastic but I dont think it's worth being poisoned.

  • -1

According to one review, it doesn't heat evenly and food gets burnt even if temperature is lowered.

    • +1

Potentially user error? Food does need to be rotated and setting applied for relevent food type.

      Ps I didn't negotiate you

      • +11

        That’s a relief.

You should never negotiate with Teflonists…

  • A question: for those of us who have previously used up the free trial of OnePass and cancelled, does re-enabling it on the monthly plan on the 28th of the month mean it lasts until the end of this calendar month, or does it last until the 27th of next month?

    Thanks!

  • How different it is from
https://www.mydeal.com.au/healthy-choice-electric-convection…? I am looking fo something which can be used as oven as well

    • I can't remember price but didn't Aldi have something like this recently?

    • +2

      How different it is

That one looks like it's made from thin sheet steel. Similar ones I've seen before had the "door hinge" wear out after a couple of years.

If your food spits while cooking, it's much easier to clean a glass bowl than to scrub the interior of that oven - you can put it in your sink and leave it soaking for hours, to soften food debris. If your food drops debris, like crumbed chicken, the glass bowl may be easier to clean out. And if something gets baked-on, it's easier to scrub off glass than off a metal pan.

However, you may at some stage drop and smash the glass bowl, or the plastic handle could break off, so your steel one may last longer, depending on how clumsy your household members are and how durable the plastic parts of each type are.

    • +1

      Airfryers are just mini ovens.

Your linked one is designed like a mini kitchen in-built oven.

The OP's one is like a mini benchtop oven:

      https://www.bigw.com.au/product/pronti-17l-family-turbo-conv…

      • I am wondering if I can use the 'Healthy Choice 6.5L Glass Digital Air Fryer' in all function like baking etc which covers all of the function and operation of this 'https://www.mydeal.com.au/healthy-choice-electric-convection-airfryer-23l-1700w-air-fryer-oven-bake-black-3862394' poor convention air fryer has some extra functions.

        • Yes but the portion size you'll be baking will be tiny in the 6.5L. I would want to be sure I can get small enough baking pans to fit but still large enough to be worth the cooking effort. It would also take some experimentation with temperature and timing as the smaller capacity means the heating source is much close to the food.

  • Im curious, anyone know the basket dimensions ? Looks pretty big

    I believe Philips XXL is 21 x 21 cm

  • Just clarifying as it's hard to tell from the pics.
Is there any room underneath the mesh here?
Just thinking if you chucked food in, does the bottom get cooked or are you having to rotate the food for it to cook the bottom?

Saw a comment above saying food needs rotating, but I don't see the point in a mesh if you still need to rotate?

    • +1

The mesh allows air to get under and the food to not just bake on and burn.

You always need to turn because this is an oven, where the heat comes from the top. The highest food gets direct exposure to the heating element while the lowest food is insulated by all the other food, and the stuff in the middle doesn't get any air flow.

      • +1

        Thanks mate, appreciate the clarification!

  • +1

Thanks OP! I grabbed something else that brought it up to $100.10 in total. Fingers crossed when I wake up I'll have the front page, $25 coupon (on next spend over $75) in my mailbox or something! 😁

    • +1

      You're welcome 👍🏻

  • +1

Looks like a turbo oven dressed up as an air fryer

  • +7

I have one. It is a proper air fryer. The air exhaust holes are in the middle rear of unit.

Have cooked salmon and roast pork belly (the cuts from Aldi fits perfectly), plus the usual frozen stuff. Glass is heavy, I can't flick chips mid-cook like with plastic basket - use tongs.

There is room underneath the mesh. At the bottom of glass bowl, there is a raised step all around so the mesh sits on the step, leaving approx half cm space underneath.

Mesh is stainless steel. Can buy square replacements easily from Amazon Temu etc.

    • Coated stainless steel or pure? It looks black so it looks like it has nonstick on it

    • +2

It's typical stainless steel silver grey colour. Not non-stick.

Cooked Aldi marinated drumsticks directly on mesh and bits did stick to the mesh. Easy off with dish brush.

      • I put the mesh through the dish washer. Usually 95% of the gunk comes off. Might be some stuff stuck which requires a flick

    • Thanks. Does the air exhaust flow out being the unit horizontally or is the vent angled upwards?

      • Air exhaust out horizontally

    • What about the heat element? Does the glass bowl directly connect with the metal element?

On my benchtop oven, the top is glass with the metal element integrated in the center.

      • With the glass bowl inserted into the air fryer body, there is rubber lining in between the bowl rim and the black plastic housing. This forms a seal.

There is actually another mesh (non removable) between the fan and heating element within the housing and the glass bowl. With a torch, you can see when this top mesh starts to get oil/gunk buildup and possible to do light maintenance cleaning.

  • Good first air fryer? We're looking for one because we have a big oven and most of the time we're cooking small amounts so it's just overkill. Not sure on the two drawer options, size, brand etc.

    • +1

That was the exact reason we purchased one of these to eliminate using the oven for small cooks. This unit cooks the food in no time

For people worried about pfoa and stuff, get some of these trays https://amzn.asia/d/05U5c9Jr. Lots of shops stock them. I got a packet from my local Coles for $7.50 on clearance.

    • +2

Yes solve the PFOA issue but baking papers can introduce poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

      • +1

Christ I didn’t know about the paper thing since I don’t bake. Apparently these chemicals have been used in baby wipes too. I can never understand the shortsightedness and probably never will.

        • Anything with a plastic feel to the paper like coffee cups and "biodegradable" bowls has PFAS otherwise the oil and liquid would cause the structural integrity of the paper to fail.

          • @star-ggg: I thought they used wax or some sort of petroleum magic. It makes sense there’s more to it.

            • @Alley Cat: I assume there's better ways to do it but ultimately disposable utensils need to be cheap and coating everything with the same synthetic chemical is the cheapest way to go.

      • Is aluminium foil safe?

        • No because aluminium

      • Yes solve the PFOA issue

That was solved in the early 2000s when it was removed from the manufacturing process (it was never actually an ingredient in making Teflon)

        • +1

PFAS and PFOS 'forever chemicals' are STILL in the manufacturing process at 3M right now. And still in us, animals and aquatic creatures. They damage life. The following link is to an amazing history of the subject that covers the timeline from their invention to now. Almost nobody is going to read it all and extremely few will even take a look because most people prefer to remain ignorant which is more blisfull than being informed, and why these disasters are enabled https://childrenshealthdefense.org/defender/kris-hansen-3m-h…

    • +2

These products defeat the purpose of an air fryer.

  • no name brand

  • There's not much clearance between the mesh and the bottom of the glass bowl to allow the hot air to circulate. Philips air fryers have a whirl shaped bottom to assist with the air flow which result in more even cooking

  • 17$ delivery fee though😢

    • +1

There is a free trial for Catch ?! Link
      Otherwise it is $4per month.

      • +1

        Thank you kind sir

  • Imo the only benefit of the glass basket is solely for easy cleaning.

  • +1

Bought one of these a few months ago. Wife loves it. Much better to clean then the teflon coated one we owned before.

  • -1

Anyone know if this is noisy?

    • AFAIK, they are all noisy because of the fan.

      • some are defintely quieter than others in my experience

    • +1

I would say it's quite, noise varies depending on heat cycles but it's definitely quieter than a full size oven.

  • Could somebody with one please tell me the internal dimensions of the bottom of the dish ( / size of the tray)

    • +1

Hey mate the mesh tray is approximately 20x20cm so sizing above the bottom lip and tray would be roughly 21x21cm. For context the very top of the bowl is 22x22mm

      • +1

        Cheers mate
