  • they don't cover cracked screen but I believe they subsidise part of the cost if you have apple care.

    On another note isn't the Australian laws on warranty changing next year to become a default of 2 years?

      do you have a source for this second statement?

      • From working in a phone store, I can advise that consumer statutory rights generally already covers things like iphones/ipads with a 24 month warranty on the basis that given the cost and quality of a good it is reasonable to expect to last an appropriate period of time.

        Like wog_ta said, things like cracked screens are rarely covered by manufacturers warranty but AppleCare will make the repairs cheaper, 90 day telephone support and global repair coverage.

        • Sorry I think im getting confused about the legal battle that apple had and lost in Europe where they have a statutory 2 year warranty and apple was selling the warranty on the basis if they don't get it they wont be covered.

    Paying for AppleCare is a waste of money tbh.. When you register your device on Apple's support site, you get 1 year of free warranty & support starting from the date you registered, not the date of purchase. Online support site also replaces your device with a completely new one so once you receive your new device you have another year of free warranty.

    I bought an iPhone 3GS back in 2009 but hadn't registered it on the support site until last year (so a year of free AppleCare started then & there). I sent it in with a cracked screen and they sent me a new one within 4 days free of charge. They covered the costs of shipping & packaging too (they give you a barcode to take Aus Post).

    I also took advantage of it again this year when I sent in my iPhone 4S that had been dropped a few times and had a few nicks and dents. They replaced it for free with a new device within a few days & now that I have a new device, I have another year of free AppleCare starting from the day I register the device on the support site (which will only be when I want to get another replacement).

    • wow lies! You need activate your extended applecare within 12months of the original purchase, so it would not have worked to just put it on 2 years after purchase, consult the apple website, and literally 100s of posts of whirlpool, thats just not how it happens. I forget to activate my applecare on my MBP by 2 days of the 12 month purchase expiry and had to fight to have it applied.

      Also when Apple gives you a replacement or refurb it comes with 3 THREE months warranty, not 12 months, again this is a known fact. (The only possible except to this, is if you had extended applecare, put it on the week before the phone died, and they transferred the extended applecare on to the new device, but again thats still something you have originally paid for, replacements do not come with 12 months warranty as standard).

      • I might be wrong about it being called AppleCare then but there is definitely an online warranty which gives you 1 year of warranty starting from the date you register it. I believe this was the link I used to get it: https://expresslane.apple.com/ProductSelector.action

        As for you saying you only receive 3 months warranty on the replacement device, I'm not 100% sure because I haven't activated my replacement devices yet but I don't see why you wouldn't get the full 12 months as you are activating a fresh new serial. It's possible that they link the new device to your old one but I'm not too sure about that - They never told me anything of the sort & the new devices aren't shown on my account like my old ones are.

        Also, the replacement devices they sent me weren't refurbs (I don't think?). They came boxed in retail packaging with plastic wrap just like if you bought one new from the Apple Store.

    • Difficult to argue if its not on a plan, especially if its 19-20 months old. Difficult story if its on a contract for 2 years.

  • The way i understand applecare

    -Apple care starts from the date on the receipt NOT when you activate it.
    -A lot of the time the products you get are refurbished (packaging means nothing)
    -With every new apple device you get a free 3 months trial of premium apple care support (eg phone support, advanced hardware replacement, etc)
    -Replacement devices continue with regular warranty period (either the default 12 or apple care 24)unless this is less then 3 months in which you will get 3 months warranty on the replaced item.

    *Not a big fan of extra warranty but good luck trying to argue statutory warranty, easier said then done.
