    totally need more handhelds..

    • Totally. Remorse feeling ….

  • Going by the screenshots, looks like this one can't play red dead redemption 2 :(

    • +3

It can stream it via Moonlight

  • +1

isnt trimui smart pro better than this and $20 cheaper?

    • That's what I was 🤔

    • Trimui Smart Pro is good but last time I checked it had issues with inputs not registering.

Not so bad for RPG. Only affects those who rock the directional pad quickly.

    • Where are you seeing the trimui smart pro for $80?

      • +1

It went as cheap as $55 on aliexpress in a recent sale. Great device

        • Hey what os are you using for it thanks?

          • +1

@WwDesi: Just the stock one - haven't played around with the custom firmwares yet

          • +1

@WwDesi: There's not really any cfws for this unit yet.
Knulli is still in alpha for the Smart Pro
There's Tomato and Crossmix which are both stock firmware with additional functionality and emulators added in.

I'm just using stock but but currently my SP is only for PSP and GBA which the 5' 16:9 screen is perfect for. Rest is done on my RGB30 for 4:3;8:7,1:1 content

    waiting for next rg556 deal

    • RG556 or Retroid Pocket 4 Pro and I'm in.

  • I think the form and power of this is almost identical to the 35xxh outside of the screen ratio.. so I'm not sure why this was kind of released.
Seems to not have a real place. As 35xxh has a better ratio for the older games.. this is trying to accommodate n64 etc but isn't that great for 64

    • +1

It’s the same 4:3 ratio of the RG35XXH and the same processor. Both are 640x480 devices. It’s really about the larger display and possibly the stacked triggers instead of inline.

I think it’d be worth a look if you don’t have an existing device in the RG35 family of devices. If you do, might be worth holding out for something with a newer chip or going up a price bracket.

      • Agree with this.. sorry I thought they switched it to a 1:1 ratio.
Also they improved the location of the bumper buttons. As they are stacked now

        • There’s the RG Cube which released a few weeks earlier that has a 1:1, I think 720x720 display. That one cost a good chunk more but and has a much faster processor, and is an Android based device (if I recall correctly) with touchscreen.

          • +1

@Smigit: Yep I knew the cube and I thought of that when I made the mistake of ratio change.. but the 40 is a bigger version of the 35 with a stacked shoulder button layout so it has some improvements

  • Sometimes I feel like a moron for buying the Analogue Pocket.

  • Can it do N64?

    • +1

Yeah. Some more demanding N64 games might skip frames.

      • +1

That's Mario Galaxy on the Wii in the screenshot … can it play that? :D

  • Whats the ebst retro hand held at fhe moment

    • Depends on what you mean by best. Most powerful is something like Steam Deck, but it's bulky and expensive.

      • Thanks for the reply, I mean the retro cheap handhelds you see on aliexpress, etc. (sub $250).

        • +1

It really depends on what systems you want to be able to play and what size/form factor you want.

For pure power, something like the Retroid Pocket 4 or Anbernic RG556. If you only want to play up to 32 bit consoles, then you can get something much cheaper, like the one in this deal. Check out the spreadsheet I linked to further down in the comments.

        • Choosing a retro handheld can be overwhelming.. it's really important to define what you want to play… I bought the rg35xxh as my first and while it's good I made the mistake of it being my PSP replacement.
I then got a retroid pocket 4 pro which fit my needs perfectly but obviously it costs a lot more.

So identify the consoles first.. that determines the power. Then define the form factor (I.e pocketable/ widescreen etc). Find something that fits within your budget or wait for a good sale.
Also worth noting that one size won't fit all and having two or three devices might be more suited on your case scenario

    • This may or may not fit your use case.
If you already have an Android phone, it can emulate games. I can't speak for iPhone, I've never looked into it.
My 2019 Oppo can emulate up to PS2 games. I use a "telescopic controller" on the phone to make it feel like a hand held - but it's not a requirement, especially not for something like GBA emulation.
It will mostly come down to what processor your phone has. Check out the EmulationOnAndroid reddit forum for more info. Very easy to set up.

  • Any advantage to having the widescreen?

    • Better for PSP. This one isn't widescreen though

      • Also potentially side by side displays for DS titles.

Otherwise I think at the power levels of this device, 4:3 isn’t a bad ratio.

        • Ugh… Don't get me started on ds stuff lol finger recognition on these capacitive touch screens are never fast enough to register… Tried playing elite beat agents on retroid pocket 4…. It was a disaster

  • How does this compare in CPU/GPU power to the RG353V? I've had my eye on it for a while, very much looking at the performance level (or better) for PS1 and N64+ games.

    • +5

Here's a good comparison between all handhelds

  • I currently don't have any of these retro handheld and looking to get my first. I dont want to break any banks either.

Would you guys recommend this or RG35XX H? Any other good alternatives?

    • Either is a great choice. It’ll come down to form factor, portability and the games you want to play.

Miyoo Mini + if you want something pocketable and up to PS1 games - what I run with since I like the Nintendo gameboy nostalgia.

RG35XX or above if you want something more comfortable, more powerful but less portable. There is no wrong choice.

    • Yeah you can't go wrong as mentioned. I have the rg35xx h and love it for retro (up to ps1), battery life, controls and portability. The rg40 sacrifices a little battery life for a bigger screen and better ergonomics which I think is a win.

    • I bought this off the recent Anbernic eBay deal (not for this low!) after researching a great starter retro handheld. This ticked all the boxes for me. From the reviews I watched, the slightly larger screen makes all the difference for older games. I don't think there's a reason not to jump on this for your first.

    • I have RG35XXV and recently got Powkiddy X55 and its amazing for its price point. It has 5.5in screen compare to this RG40XX and look great. Performance wise, go play everything up to PSP console.

  • +1

Is there anything like this with a 8-10" screen? I have so bad eyesight, cant see the little 4" screens…

    • Yeah me too! I'm getting older….

Usually they are only 3.5 inch, at least this is 4, might be ok…

      • +2

Get Legion Go. Its 8.8inch screen. You can play everything with it.

    • Trimui Smart Pro 5" 16:9 screen is pretty good for us visually challenged people even for 4:3 content.

      • Good for moonlight streaming ?

    • Unless you want an X86 based handheld pc console, your best bet would be an Android tablet with a controller grip, something like this.

      https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007379704005.html

      • how can you determine if those controller grips are supported by the platform you're trying to play? I'm assuming that despite being Bluetooth for the connection, the emulator(s) still need to support the actual inputs?

  • +1

    I don't need one. I don't need one!!

    • +1

Neither do I lol but I don't have a retro handheld so I'll probably pull the trigger…
If you already do hold off IMHO…

      • Nah I don't have one at the moment. I've had a few of these kind of systems in the past though. I seem to set them all up how I like it. Then sit there and barely play anything. Or sit there for an hour playing many games for 10 seconds at a time. Then get bored with it and sell it. These ones have a bigger screen though so I'm interested. :)

  • Ok maybe a stupid question because I missed something, but where do you input the discount coupon code?

I'm assuming the code works with all colours?

Also OP if you read this, does this support the Amiga system? That's my favourite old system :) all I can find after looking is that it supports a list of systems, "plus more". Not that helpful….

    • When you proceed to checkout from the cart you can apply the promo code. Amiga is possible through RetroArch I believe - you need to look up tutorials on how to set it up as it's not an option straight out of the box.

      • Ok thanks. I'm guessing it's not so hard to install retroarch?

  • Such a good deal, I have a RG-353V and the only issue is that the analog stick on the left side should be where the d-pad is. Would insta-buy this if they stopped placing them like that.

    • +1

Its pretty subjective but in my opinion it makes more sense to have the d-pad on top on a low powered device like this or the 353. You're mostly going to be playing d-pad focused 8/16/32 bit games.

      • -1

The advertising is aimed at N64+ games, it's reasonable to assume they want you to play games that work better ergonomically than where the current sticks are placed. With how they are, it makes gaming on anything N64+ incredibly uncomfortable even after a few minutes.

        • +1

It won't even max at n64.
N64 is partially playable. Not sure where you got N64+ from
It will max out comfortably on psx. Half of N64 might be playable, most of Dreamcast, not much PSP, no Saturn or above.

  • +1

I caved today. Under $100 I’m fine with. Got a couple trips coming up so this will be a nice distraction and something to pass the time. Thanks op

  • Did anyone buy from this deal? Got shipping notification yet?

    • Have you got the notification or console yet?

      • Mine has been shipped. Was shipped about 3 or 4 days ago so i think i've probably got another week before it'll arrive.

        • Awesome, I just made an order myself.

        • I just got another email ETA - 10-20 business days via priority line.

Who did they send yours via?

          • @markis: Yeah same place. Mine was processed on the 29th of July and is now in my city today. Probably be delivered tomorrow. It did take about 4 or 5 days from when I made the order before it was processed though.

            • @krammis76: Excellent, have you received yours yet? I got the notification that it has arrived in Australia, so hopefully I’ll have it by the weekend.

              • @markis: Yep got mine Friday last week i believe. Spent some of the weekend rearranging the roms and sorting stuff out to have it how i like it and i find it awesome! I've had a couple 3.5inch versions of these consoles and the 4inch definitely makes a difference.

                • @krammis76: amazing, did you follow any specific tutorials? or just cloned the Micro SD and added some new roms?

                  • @markis: I just use retro game corps youtube channel. He has a bunch of guides there. He has one for the 35xx and it's pretty much the same with the 40xx. Didn't bother cloning the sd card. Just set up a new one. I have a decent set of roms sorted already on my computer so used those but did grab some from the card that the system came with. Mainly arcade ones i didn't have.

                    • @krammis76: Thanks, I’ve watched and followed his guides and have my two cards ready.

I was hoping to have it by now, but it seems that my delivery was attempted and sent back, according to Fast Horse Express. Waiting to hear back from Geek Buying 🤷‍♂️

                      • @markis: Oh damn hey. Hopefully they sort it out for you quickly.
