Both are fantastic, i own a few of these. Zippo comes with a really good smooth case, which makes it great for tricks!

The lighter fluids are normally $7.95 at local tobacconists.

      • is there a fluid you can buy that doesn't make your mouth taste like you've been huffing dry cleaning fluid?

        • +16

You're not meant to drink the fluid, it goes into the lighter

          • @AGoodName: i dare say you've never lit a smoke wi a zippo

      • +5

Just buy a big bottle of Shellite from Bunnings

      • +8

I will not buy this tobacconist, it is scratched.

    • I am not seeing these prices. What am I doing wrong?

      • @faraz4oz I just checked, all those prime day sale deals I listed have finished.

  • +14

I was going to buy one for EDC, but I have read that the lighter fluid evaporates in a matter of weeks without use. You can mitigate this by buying a butane insert but they're around the $30-$40 mark.

    • +1

Did not know that, cheers !

    • +7

      Weeks? More like one week.

I've had one for ages, as they are really good for lighting certain camping stoves. They are very impractical for occasional use.

You can also use naptha/shellite as fuel as it's a lot cheaper than zippo fuel.

      • In overseas, they use gasoline.

      • +6

Quit smoking about 20 years ago but recently realised that I always wanted the Zippo lighter. You know - the looks, the clicks, the 'buy once keep forever' thing. Boy, what a massive disappointment it was … It couldn't hold the fuel even for a four days!

    • +7

That's the biggest issue with these if you're not a smoker. I have one and I've refilled it more than I've used it..

    • +1

Yeah they aren’t the most practical. Fluid dries out within a few days in my experience. But I love collecting them and the iconic click. The butane insert is garbage, made in China and doesn’t work half the time after you fill it. Best to stick with the original insert and just fill with Shellite every few days to keep it going. If you smoke a pipe, contact them and they will send you a pipe insert, works great.

      • Oh man that explains why I hate zippo. I have a butane one and it sucks. Good to know the normal ones are OK.

      • +2

It ain't a full Zippo experience if you're not filling it regularly. And keeping your lighting thumb clean.

      • I'm a cigar smoker and use the butane torch inserts without issue

they sometimes come out of the box with the gas flow set incorrectly - but a simple mod fixes that

see https://www.reddit.com/r/Zippo/comments/i1i6qw/problem_with_… or just look for 'zippo butane mod' on YT

        • which butane refill are you using? I haven’t been able to find one that works…

          • @park it: currently the zippo two torch - helps to keep in warm in pocket if you are in a cold climate (or do the mod above)

rarely have an issue in summer

    • You can also buy a sealing insert like this to stop the fluid from evaporating: https://www.amazon.com.au/Lighter-Gasket-Repair-Anti-Evapora…

      • I did but in my experience it barely made a difference. Have you had any luck?

    • +2

Zorro War Armor from AliExpress, I love that lighter. It's a Zippo-like lighter, machined from a solid chunk of brass (incredibly heavy compared to a Zippo which is pressed), and it has a beast of a hinge.

The lid has a lip that fits over the body, with a rubber gasket. The lighter lasts multiple weeks with constant use, as opposed to a few days with Zippo. Should last significantly longer if not indefinitely with little to no use, but I never really tested that. I'd say it lasted about 8 to 10 times longer than a Zippo with constant use, which was incredible.

A few cons other than the weight (which is not a con to me) is that Zippo inserts don't fit in perfectly (they're slightly too loose) and the lid is so heavy that it destroys the cam on the insert, which makes the lid loose. This takes a few years tho, and can easily and cheaply be replaced.

Overall I liked it much better than my Zippo, but when the cam gave out and I needed to replace the insert, I just never got around to it. I will one day. Maybe today.

  • +5

I don't know why these are so highly rated. If I fill mine up it's completely dried out and can't be lit after a few weeks of no use

    • +20

      iconic is why.

can fill them from your jeep's fuel tank in the middle of a rice paddy in between torturing a bunch of villagers for protecting their livelihoods

    • I put gas insert, works like a charm

      • +2

I'm sure gas is better in so many ways but a Zippo that hisses just doesn't sit right with me.

  • +1

Worse thing about zippo’s is the taste of the burnt fluid , or half unburnt (Naptha),
besides being generally a pain in the arse and about as modern as a pocket watch with chain and fob .
Do yourself a favour and just buy bic’s in bulk from eBay .
Of course if you want something nobody will steal , zippo’s the one 4 u .

    • +3

buy the clipper refillables. way better and adjustable.
bic are throwaway waste. clippers are cheaper too. its the ozbargain way!

      • Clippers are awesome. Rechargeable too!

        • Never had any luck topping up mine with butane… What's the trick?

  • Thanks OP. I bought one of these with a butane insert, seeing as I smoke cigars. Good find, been waiting for a good price on this type of brass.

    • -2

I find cigars shouldn't be lit with gas as it can react and slightly change the flavours of a good cigar. I always lit mine with a wooden match, but let it burn past the match head before lighting the cigar.
Or if rich enough, a S.T Dupont does a great job and being highly collectable, they really do hold their value. I've seen them $10,000+

      • Can you notice the difference? Ive heard people saying they can’t tell.

      • gas as in butane or petrol?

        • Butane is ok as it's used in the jet double/triple/quad burner lighters and burns clean. But the actual liquid-type such as a zippo fluid can have a odour which when burned, can alter the flavour.

  • +4

Classic, built solid, minimal parts, low maintenance, reliable, serviceable, made in USA, lifetime guarantee, windproof, can be lit in windy conditions. Stays lit, once lit, without needing to do anything.

Perform tricks, and it is a perfect ASMR fidget device. Should last a really long time. Great for the outdoors and as a keepsake, can be engraved.

seal the lighter insert with plumbers tape then re-case it so there's no gap for evaporation and it'll last longer than usual

Thanks, bought one for my next air duct crawling adventure

Gonna buy one so i can flick /light it and then throw it in to the pool of petrol from the flipped over bad guys car.

With the catch phrase " hot enough for ya?".

And the beautiful girl i rescued kisses me, and the camera fades out

    End scene.

    $4 difference but looks better

    • Due to the 1.5 x thicker housing the Armor lighters allow a unique engraving process.

The so called Deep Carve technique is only used for this type of lighters. The deeper engraving creates a detailed surface structure on the lighter, which creates an extraordinary haptic. For all ASMR fans (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) a unique feeling for the ultimate sound experience when scratching and tapping. With the Armor lighters and their intensive surface texture.

      Good for a gift

@stickymoo: Not hard to develop a zippo addiction, even if you don’t smoke :D

            • @HeXa: After looking at these zippos I’m now considering trying pipe smoking. Seriously

              • @Cusack: buy a boat too - helps to increase the speed you become poor

(pipe tobacco is seriously overpriced in AU due to tax)

                • @HeXa: Yeah but I smoke cigars and I think pipe tobacco works out a lot cheaper? I haven’t looked into it yet though

                  • @Cusack: depends how you get your cigars ;)

my experience is pipe tobacco is harder to import - mates reckon it it more likely to get found by customs (even if in small tins/bags)

and if it gets caught in the post, then instant confiscation, unlike cigars that you can opt to pay duties on

but yeah - can experiment with blending your cigar nubs with some pipe tobacco

(I use my corncob pipe to finish them)

EDIT: I had a look just now on the PSA FB group - seems I just need to consider other ways of getting it :D

  • Need one to stash in bunkhouse.

  • They bring back good memories but I haven’t smoked in years. Thanks God.

    • Going to visit pharmacy to see what people doing right now

  • +1

I don't even smoke and I was going to grab one - just to offer a light to others I guess? Seeing all the comments saying it won't retain lighter fluid has turned me off tho

    • Just like a well built hand-wound watch, a classic.

It does what it is suppose to do, with minimal maintenance.

    • Get the butane soft flame insert when on sale

(It and the blue flame torches used to get down to ~$25)

The soft flame makes it a bit easier to fly with a zippo

Also have a look at thunderbird range by Vector

    • +1

I only smoke an occasional pipe or cigar. But still love my Zippos and often carry one in my pocket or car. Never know when it might come in handy.

  • +3

What's the difference between a Hippo and a Zippo?

One is really heavy, the other is a little lighter.

  • They are a great bit of kit for the novelty but insanely impractical for everyday use.

    • +1

Works well for camping, uses the same fuel as my cooker which is really practical for outdoors. I've had the same one for 20 years.

  • I do find it mildly amusing that it is in the Amazon department of

    Sports, Fitness & Outdoors

  • Now is $22

  • $37 now

  • has anyone had there lighter shipped yet? mine hasnt

    • my zippo orders on 17th shipped next day but haven't left US yet
