…because Bali has the same travel warning.

I would actually suggest that tourists are more of a target in Bali than in China/Honkers.

    • +8

Looks like the CCP bots have down voted your legitimate comment. China is desperate for tourism due to their struggling economy after the collapse of the real estate market, and declining stock markets.

Since the CCP imposed the National Security Law in 2020, HK's autonomy and freedoms have drastically declined, making it less appealing for visitors.

    • +1

Obey the law then u r all good. Just keep your mouth mouthful with chinese cuisines.

    • This is also the case in many developed countries in Europe.

  • Is it cheaper to take a ferry over and stay in Macau?

    • +1

There’s a promotion that I think expires soon… free ferry ride for tourists to travel from hk to Macau. Offered by the Macau gov to boost tourism

But to answer your question, hotel in China is generally much cheaper than hk and Macau

    • Take the bus/coach from the area near the Airport

    • +1

It's even cheaper to take the train and stay in Shenzen. Also people don't get the ferry to Macau anymore, they get the bus. Much more frequent, no pre booking and cheaper

    • +2

What's in Macau these days ?? Went many years ago - when it used to be islands - now it's just a mess of reclaimed land and casinos.

As for HK - yep, went there in the 90s when I had family residing/working there - went a few years ago as a cruise starting point; it's just a congested mess of people and vehicles - nothing of interest for me these days.

      • +3

Seriously, unless there is a reason to go Macau or Hong Kong, for a average tourist, China is probably cheaper and better value for money in all aspects.

There are unique things about Hong Kong, but it is fast changing and becoming another city governed by the PRC.

        • +1

Exercise a high degree of caution in Hong Kong.

Re-posting this comment due to the CCP bots downvoting kenmizuki's comment. This is legitimate information the Australian government has highlighted for travelers safety.

The CCP imposed the National Security Law in HK in 2020, as a result:

    • Increased Surveillance: Heightened monitoring and potential privacy concerns for visitors.
    • Strict Law Enforcement: Harsher penalties and stricter enforcement of laws, including the National Security Law.
    • Diminished Freedom of Expression: Limited ability to speak freely or participate in political activities.
    • Travel Warnings: Many countries have issued travel advisories due to political instability.
    • Visa Issues: Potential complications with visas or entry requirements due to political tensions.
    • Restricted Access: Limited access to certain areas or events due to security measures.
    • Safety Concerns: General safety concerns amid political unrest and protests.
    • +15

Im not Chinese, nor am i a ccp bot. But i will down vote you for your fear mongering rubbish.

I don’t agree with the ccp in any way shape or form, but i also don’t live there, so who cares…

If people want to visit HK or China they can and will probably have a great time, as they would in any other country.

Increased Surveillance: Heightened monitoring and potential privacy concerns for visitors.

You think other countries don’t spy on you?

Strict Law Enforcement: Harsher penalties and stricter enforcement of laws, including the National Security Law.

Again, not the only country that does this.

Diminished Freedom of Expression: Limited ability to speak freely or participate in political activities.

Realistically, would you ever go on a holiday somewhere and need to voice your disgust at a government or tell uncle xi he looks like winnie the pooh bear? Do you plan to travel there to participate in political activities?

Personally i tend to try to enjoy my holidays, not look for trouble.

Travel Warnings: Many countries have issued travel advisories due to political instability.

There is usually varying degrees of travel warnings for many popular countries.

Hk, china and all the places winne claims are his are safer than most western countries imo.
I’ve never been concerned for me or my families safety while walking any of those streets. Can’t say the same for here or any other western countries.

Visa Issues: Potential complications with visas or entry requirements due to political tensions.

They literally just a few weeks ago made it easier to get into all areas over there.

Restricted Access: Limited access to certain areas or events due to security measures.

Where do you want to go that you can’t in Hk?

Safety Concerns: General safety concerns amid political unrest and protests.

As i said above, imo hk, china and the rest are all safer than Australia, America and so on.

      • -1

        well said!

      • +2

Would the downvote need to go to the AU Govt in that case as @huju was reposting from the AU Govt Smartraveller website ?

IIRC travel insurance will also play a part based on Smartraveller i.e if they say somewhere is a no-go Zone and one travels there and gets into trouble (I'm not saying HK is a 'no-go zone) then the travel insurance co may decide to not assist.

People will always need to make there own decisions and determine risk vs reward. Some might say Smartraveller is overly conservative, others may choose to follow the guidance especially if they are new to international travels.

      • +1

You think other countries don’t spy on you?

Other countries might spy, but China is worse by a noticeable margin.

"China's use of advanced technologies like facial recognition, AI, and internet monitoring is extensive and tightly integrated into daily life and public spaces. This allows for more detailed tracking and monitoring of individuals' activities, which some may perceive as more invasive than surveillance practices in other countries.

Again, not the only country that does this.

China is worse. You can get arbitrarily detained as a foreigner.

"there have been instances where individuals, including foreigners, have been arbitrarily detained under suspicion of espionage or other national security-related offenses. The Chinese government maintains strict control over national security matters and has been known to detain individuals, including activists, journalists, and sometimes tourists, on suspicion of espionage or other activities deemed threatening to national security."

Realistically, would you ever go on a holiday somewhere and need to voice your disgust at a government or tell uncle xi he looks like winnie the pooh bear? Do you plan to travel there to participate in political activities?

Holidays should ideally be free from political concerns, but respecting human rights and freedoms, including the right to peaceful expression, is important regardless of location

Hk, china and all the places winne claims are his are safer than most western countries imo. I’ve never been concerned for me or my families safety while walking any of those streets.

Your personal experience may vary, but geopolitical tensions can lead to unpredictable changes in visa policies and entry requirements, impacting travelers ease of access to certain regions

I don't suspect you personally are a CCP bot El cheepo and I think you have a fair mind on the matter, and I mean no respect to you. However, I suspect your comment is upvoted by CCP bots because it is pro China, despite your Winnie comments lol. There was no legitimate reason to downvote kenmizuki's comment about SmartTravellers website, which has now returned to the positive after being at -7 at one point.

All I want is for the people to have information to make their own decision, and if CCP bots downvote government SmartTraveller advice, i will counter this by exposing concerns about China.

        • Im not saying China doesn’t have its flaws, it has many.

But as a tourist, it really is a safe destination (unless you fit into a mould they don’t like, eg: activists, journalists and so on)

But to be fair, anyone that plans a trip to China that fits into what they don’t like is going to be self aware that it is a risk for themselves, thus they are likely to avoid it.

Average joe has nothing to worry about.

Holidays should ideally be free from political concerns,

I agree, and that is generally in control of the individual visiting - we know what would piss pooh bear off, so if we want a peaceful holiday, don’t do it.

but respecting human rights and freedoms, including the right to peaceful expression, is important regardless of location

I agree, they are important things - but they are not crucial to enjoying a brief holiday abroad.
If you feel like visiting a country is akin to supporting it’s government - don’t visit.

But i would guess that most tourists are like myself, just out to see the world when on holiday and have a good time.

Part of seeing the world is seeing how life works in other countries for the local people.

So rather than put fear into the average joe, its better to educate them on the sensitivities of a region when traveling abroad so they can just be a good respectful tourist.

Remember: when your on holiday, your there to see the place, not change it or its way of doing things…

China isn’t the only place foreigners need to be careful, many Asian countries have some strict laws and regulations based around culture and tough Government rules.

So for anyone visiting Asia, just do some research and behave yourself and you will have no issues.

I know its a big ask for us Aussies, behaving while on holiday is not exactly what we are known for 😂

Let me break it down more simply for you.

Huju accused all downvotes of being ccp bots.

                  Huju is wrong.

Huju does not know who and why people downvoted.

Huju made an assumption based on a prejudice.

                  You said:

As i explained above, my reply was equal in force to what huju accused.
                  Sorry i used big words.

And FWIW, you can’t read the tone of written text - thats you in your own head adding your own spin.

It would only be a surprise to those who seem to have difficulty following a simple discussion. Not pointing any fingers though…😂

It really isn’t that difficult to avoid sensitive political subjects while in sensitive public places.

Id rather keep my mouth shut and have a nice holiday then travel 10+ hours across the world to yell at a country i dont live in.

Tourists to Australia don't get arrested for being critical of the government.

Yeah, but they have to fear violence, abuse and straight up racism while walking down the street in our capital cities 😂

Thats not generally a thing in China, HK and other asian cities.

Anyone able to book with kids?

    • +1

Nope. This is from FAQ for the offer:

The offer applies only to adult fares, child and infant fares are excluded. It is required to select ‘two adults’ when searching for flights on the Cathay website. Adult fares means fares for passengers 12 years old and above.

      • Also can’t book kids fares separately because you need an adult in same booking :(

        • that sucks, was hoping to take the kids to Disneyland

Hong Kong is getting desperate. It's advantage over other Chinese cities is fast diminishing.

    A shame, really.

  • Taxes and surcharges kill this. Comes out to ~800 per person from Sydney

    • Not if you are booking around the Xmas period. ~$800 is a good deal for those who managed to get 24-31 Dec.

  • I would love to do that but I my son is 10 YO and we can't use this option

  • It's quiet ridiculous that they don't let you use this code if you travel with a kid
