Thanks OP. Been meaning to test these programs out for a while.

    • +3

Im amazed that with ownership by Canva, they are making things better, even the EOFY pricing was lower than i paid for the bundle deal.

      • +5

Oh, just you wait. It’ll succumb to the same enshitification that most stuff is plagued with nowadays.

      • +4

Responses to feature requests on their official forums be like:

WTF do you want that for? Only clueless bimbos editing their worthless instagram pics could possibly want that. We will focus on serious features for serious users, nevermind that your requested feature has been in Photoshop for 20+ years.

  • I was editing the deal and I didn't see you posted it. If you want you can borrow the title that I have posted above.

  • +7

Thank you, I will happily get rid of Adobe if this gets the job done.

    • +2

Just need an alternative to Lightroom and I’m set.. but can’t find anything close

      • Yeah, I trialled it a couple of years ago, I have to say, I went back to Lightroom.

      • +1

If you’ve got a Mac / iPad / iPhone give Photomator a try. Doesn’t have advanced editing tools, but for photo touch ups it is pretty decent. Can also do bulk edits.

      • Affinity photo is more of a Photoshop alternative than a Lightroom alternative. Was quite close until adobe introduced some ai features including the arguably best in industry noise reduction from adobe raw used by both Photoshop and Lightroom. and if you need any of those ai features they seem to be the only choice.

      • +1

I use CaptureOne instead of Lightroom.

        • I dropped Capture One it got too expensive. There is better in Open Source now.

      • DxO is the best non adobe option, but I'm still just using LR personally

    • This doesn't come close to Adobe for pro tools. It's sort of a middle ground tool that's not the industry standard for now. Will wait for a while to see if things change with the new ownership

      • Whenever I hear "pro tool" and "industry standard" it's to fleece you.

    • +2

It has replaced everything that I needed Photoshop for. I have been using it for about 3 years now and have only on a couple of brief moments wished for something that I remember Photoshop had that this didn't.

    • +1

Canva is getting more capable, but it's not an Adobe replacement. It probably will be eventually though, like 5+ years from now.

      • +24

Don’t. This is a gesture to help out non-profits, abusing it is a way to ensure this kind of thing no longer occurs.

          • +8

@bcYield: So therefore you're abusing it by using it for 'personal use'.

            • -5

@ldd-mn: So those non-profits don't use it for "personal use" on some occasions?

              • -2

@bcYield: Are you looking for the right combination of words that will magically transform you into a non-profit organization and you're entitled to use this software for free?

I'm happy to tell you you're that if it'll end this line of questions

                • @Crow K: The combination of words that you choose to skip to answer?

                  • -2

@bcYield: If you have something worthwhile to contribute, I will be interested to hear it :)

                    • +1

@Crow K: Surely not worthwhile when you don't even have a clear answer to that basic question :)

                      • -2

@bcYield: Basic is a very good word to describe what you brought to the table today.

I'll bite: yes, I have no doubt that at some stage in history, something that is always a non-profit organization has allowed an individual within it to sometimes use its resources for personal use.

What sort of moon logic are you going to use to make that apply to your circumstances? "If places that are always non-profits sometimes allow personal use, then me, who has never been a non-profit, obviously should get to do so as well?"

                        • +1

@Crow K: First of all I don't say I encourage this act. By personal use I refer to myself only. Maybe I didn't make my wording very clear in the first place.

For a very small group I think it's not gonna harm the company, hence, you can see top popular deals here in many forms of abusing backed by hundreds to thousands votes. So, it depends on the person and to what level.

People still do pirating, geo deals, multiple accounts, etc. To what extend you agree with them.

                          • @bcYield: No snowflake takes responsibility for the avalanche.

      • No, because it will be a per-school license, which is a standard Canva arrangement. You won't just be able to use a .edu account to get a free copy.

ooo 137 to own it once off no subscription bs so good!!

    • +4

It really is one of the great bargains in the photography world.

I’ve been using Affinity for years. It took a few months to rewire my brain to the subtle differences from Photoshop, but now it does everything I need without fuss, and without subscription.

      • +2

Is it also good, that it is now Australian?

        • +4

I’ve actually been worried about the acquisition, because Serif has always been great, and acquisitions usually lead to software enshittification.

That said, any changes I’ve noticed so far have actually been for the better… but it’s early days.

          • +1

@axyh: Yes, that what i also thought, and how Canva is subscription based and what they were thinking with the acquisition. At least they have a good name in the industry, even though Canva is not my sort of software.

          • +1

            @axyh: You’ve read my mind.

I think it’s still early days. I don’t know exactly what Canva’s operating model is, or whether they’re generating enough revenue already to be sustainable, but I’m just dreading the enshittification of Affinity.

The cynical part of me thinks it’s just a matter of time till it’s turned into a subscription model too and then eventually priced through the roof once Canva notice people have become reliant on them.

            • +1

@cnut: The subscription model is what i am also dreading. But I think Affinitys customer base is here because of the subscription free model, they will have to churn over most of their customer base to grow. Unless they are going to get revenue from the current base. This may lead to another company to take over with what Affinity has done bringing a non subscription model to compete with Adobe.

          • @axyh: Microsoft has no problems selling Office as a subscription and a one-off sale. Sometimes, I wonder whether all the negative speculation invites it to be a self-fulfilling prophecy. Or we can always just say enshitification happened.

    • I bet ya Canva deny the LTD holders AI features and such, which will be subscription exclusive.

  • Does the download link get email to you?

  • Been testing out alternatives to Adobe including FOSS options and will test this out as well

  • Trying to activate it.. it keeps crashing trying to activate.. ozbargined?

  • Can I stack this with my lifetime licence? 🤩

  • This let me use on an account that already had used the 7 day trial. I just opened the app on my computer and it gave me a button to click for 180 days.

    • Yes, this is correct, if you have previously used the trial, you can still get the free 180 days in this deal.

  • Thanks OP, upgraded from Affinity Photo V1. V1 lasted some 8 years which equates to ~$7 per year compared to ~$14 per month for Adobe PS/LR. Affinity V2 was released in 2022 which suggests there'll be some 6 years before V3 is next released, the 50% discount made it a no brainer for me to upgrade.

  • +1

Access all three Affinity products on Mac, Windows and iPad

Darn - As someone that has made the switch to Linux about a year back, I've been on the lookout for a good quality, and powerful, photo editor, as well as an illustrator replacement… Adobe don't make anything for Linux, and it looks like no one else does either. 🙁

  • +1

definitely not going back to adobe. i'm on an enterprise liscence for this, and it is enough to accomplish my task and much cheaper from what i heard.

  • +3

According to their website they pledge to always have a perpetual licence model - https://affinity.serif.com/en-gb/press/newsroom/affinity-and…

    • +1

Interesting, and they also have this other line that if they do offer a subscription, it will be along side of the perpetual model. This is good news, hopefully they dont change their mind.

  • +1

It appears that Affinity Photo 2 doesn't support Nikon raw NEF formats. Can anyone who has used the software please confirm?

    • +1

It does, but uncompressed NEF Raw only.

      • Ok, thanks Crownanchor

  • +2

I'm a very advanced amateur (former semi-professional) photographer and Affinity Photo has been great at that level. A little weak on some things but what isn't? I fiddle with Designer a bit too.

Its one-off cost, sometimes discounted, is great compared to a subscription model.

A 6 month trial is good, but a bit moot given you aren't saving monthly fees. It puts back paying and gives a long test period though.

It may be the newish owners, but perhaps the more generous trial now is because of Adobe going hard on generative AI. Affinity doesn't have it.

If you want to ask your program to put a pink unicorn wearing a tutu into your picture, Affinty Photo isn't for you…

    • But if you want to ask your program to put a pink unicorn wearing a tutu in your picture anyway, find some Stable Diffusion plugins or similar for Affinity Photo.

      • +1

        OK, good tip.

Obviously, it's not something I am interested in!

  • any expiry date for the trial?

    • There is no expiry date listed anywhere.

  • Fantastic apps but be aware they recently got bought by Canva.

  • Perfect opportunity to test whether to upgrade from affinity photo v1. I've been contemplating buying v2 but v1 has been meeting my needs so far.

Wish they had an android app as well, but from what I read online there are zero intentions or plans to extend beyond ipad. :(

    Adobe's pricing is insane.

  • Solid apps.

  • After Adobe tried scamming me $650AUD for an Annual Licence last week this is perfect timing

So over companies like Adobe, MS, Amazon, YouTube scamming customers with high SaaS fees.

More companies need to offer one time software purchases like the old days

    • Oh yes, the good old days and one time purchases.

Its a thing of the past though, I recently watched a Youtube Vid and it was all about the Western life and how its now all subscription based.

  • Offer ended November 14th, but as of time of writing their 50% off Black Friday sale is on.
