What does this software do that free and open source alternatives don't do? (Inkscape, GIMP, Scribus…)

    • GIMP is probably the closest open source competitor (it's really good) to Affinity Photo, and I've used it for years. Designer and Publisher are way beyond Inkscape and Scribus in terms of features and stability, and are good enough for production work.

      • Do you use Affinity for production work?

I can do pretty much all my layout work in Publisher, but there a few things that I still need to use Indesign for (they're closing the gap with each update). Otherwise am pretty much running on Affinity now. Took a few months to switch over, but I've found it works pretty well.

          • @thewarden: That's good to hear. What Indesign features do you still rely on? Do you do printed material? Had any issues with working with printers (the businesses, not the machines)?

Trying to convince my wife to give it a go for longer than an hour, but she has used Adobe for a looong time.

@kiitos: I too was an Adobe purist for a long time. Affinity can export to PDF and .INDD should printers require it. Embedding fonts, swatches etc. and flattening files are no issue.

      Designer > Inkscape

    • I used Photoshop for years. Minor photo touchups, major restorations of older images, RAW image processing, small batch processing etc. All for education / family / hobby use.

When I stopped getting near-free photoshop access I moved across to Affinity (probably about 5 years ago now). Affinity has nearly all the features, and you can do most things very quickly if you knew how to do them in PS.

GIMP I installed briefly on my work PC, before giving up and installing my second Affinity activation on my work PC instead. It is very well featured, but nowhere near as usable without a significant learning curve IMHO.

  • I use Adobe but I know if I buy this, by the time I go to use it V3 will be out, or Canva will have added so many good features to the subscription version that I'd want that instead.

Depends on your usage really. Canva is not great for advanced work.

      • I agree. But Affinity is Canva now.

        • I stand corrected then!

@Lanushi: Would be cool if Canva one day competed with Adobe in the pro space, and stayed Australian owned.

            • @AustriaBargain: Totally agree. Aussie owned and with an Aussie price tag. I really hope they keep their word on maintaining the perpetual licensing model. They’re great products.

I bought the universal V2 license a couple weeks ago for about $42. I think it was targeted because I had v1 photo license.
They're prob trying to get people off V1

    • +1

Yep just checked and the upgrade is $84 on BF sale. If only it came down to $42 again!

      • They’re $48 right now…

        • How?? It's A$84.74 for v1 upgrades to universal for all apps??

Is there any chance this price will get cheaper on CyberMonday or later??

  • +2

Wish the v1 upgrade came down further - I missed the $42 deal a while back and I'm kicking myself!

    • same, didnt know there was region pricing to make it cheaper

      • Yep, I think it was with a voucher code which was unusual, so not exactly a public discount. $84 might be the normal floor.

    • They’re $48 right now…

  • FYI Canva own affinity now. Speculation on going to subscription model in the future

    • +5

Except that they've publicly pledged to keep perpetual licensing - https://affinity.serif.com/en-us/press/newsroom/affinity-and…

So yes, it's just speculation (and cynicism) when you bring up the point on subscription models :)

      • They say this, but then they will keep v2 as the promised 'perpetual' licensing, and then v3 onwards becomes subscription.

        Profit motives will decide this.

        • +2

"If we do offer a subscription, it will only ever be as an option alongside the perpetual model, for those who prefer it."

Companies have been sued / faced class actions for much less. This was a very public pledge from them, and the wording stipulating "only ever" strongly implies they're not planning to pull a move like that.

Happy to be proven wrong, but until then this is still speculation and really shouldn't be a major consideration for anyone looking to take up Affinity. The designer community probably is one of the most cynical I've ever been a part of lol

      • Words don't mean anything for corporates. Eg google don't do evil

  • I had Affinity Photo v1 before and was offered to get v2 universal for $94 I think that's a great deal regardless since you only live pay once!

Connect to India via VPN and sign up for Rs 2799 - $50 AUD(New Users). Much cheaper :)

    • How did you do this? Both my ANZ credit card and wise cards don't work while I'm on an Indian VPN to purchase it?
