Before Covid, a good price for 4TB was < $100. Will prices come down to this level again some time in the future?

    • +3

Yeah I bought some of these for $99 each at bigW, must be 2018 or 2019. Great desktop big slow storage and router-nas drives - still going great now.
It is surprising the price hasn't come down yet.

      • Inflation.

        • +4

          No, oligopoly.
An oligopoly (from Ancient Greek ὀλίγος (olígos) 'few', and πωλέω (pōléō) 'to sell') is a market in which control over an industry lies in the hands of a few large sellers who own a dominant share of the market.

          • @Al123: colesworth don't even control groceries

yes they are price gouging, massively, but people continue to go there and have a whinge

it was pretty obvious in the covid days they are jacking in sync with eachother, but aussies had alternatives (mostly), i switch to aldi and was rewarded with far superior quality and price

the homebrand stuff at colesworths has been barely edible for years, it's blatant from the taste as well as the nutritional label, often it isn't even made in australia, the one thing australia does well!

        • you can basically take anything in 2016 and double the price and you'll end up with current prices, there are exceptions due to technology, economies of scale, etc but in generally you'll at least get 100%

governments always lie when it comes to inflation, doesn't matter if you're team red or blue

actually it doesn't matter which team on all significant issues, they pretend they are different and then do exactly the same thing, more debt, less freedom, unsustainable immigration - a constant in australia until we shaft major parties and preference small parties up the ballot

hopefully more people start preferencing smaller parties, otherwise the future bleak

Bought 10 hard drives for $19 per 3TB HDD.

Granted they were SAS and not SATA drives.

      • +1

i actually made the same mistake, fortunately i ran the numbers on a 5x bay DAS with 3tb sata drives and cancelled the order before delivery and got a 14tb toshiba instead

if you calculate your electricity bills after 2 years you would have been better off buying 2x 2nd hand 14tb datacentre drives off ebay

those old enterprise drives use a hell of a lot of electricity, if you're running them 24/7, can't imagine how expensive running 10 of them for 2 years would be

while the modern enterprise hard drives are ultra efficient in comparison

not to mention the expensive nas setup to accommodate them/SAS conversion connectors/pc, etc

        • What sort of enclosure do you use with your Data centre drives? Looking at adding an external drive to a firebat ak2 plus mini pc.

        • +1

I still need to build an actual NAS with those drives, but I know that TrueNAS is a no-go for me due to the requirement of constantly spinning these drives, so I’m going with UnRAID, since the data is stored sequentially with dedicated parity drives, which means drives can spin up and down depending on what data I am accessing.

    • No

    • Expect 8TB or 16TB for this price by now after a decade of owning a few 4TB ones. Guess spinning drives are coming to end.

    • After reading Amazon and other reviews of failures, I cancelled my Amazon order and placed a C&C order with Officeworks for the easier local warranty ;)

i remember when these were $100 no sale price, i thought hdd prices were meant to go down over time, but there hasnt been a good hdd deal in over a year now.

    • +5

No more competition. It's basically a WD and Seagate duopoly with Toshiba still hanging around.

WD bought HGST a few years ago.

      • +2

Yeah agreed. its quite funny to me because it seems like 4tb ssd are coming down in price, soon they will be competing with this HDD price.

        • +1

No, almost same players on the storage market, either HDD or SSD. Keeping price high if not higher is in their interest.

          • @Al123: I call BS on this. Yes there are some players in both markets but there's enough out there that are only in the SSD space.

Take for example, Samsung. They are the largest producer of SSD and chips. They're only in the SSD space.

Off the top of my head there's also hynix.

So I will expect HDD to move into the niche market. It might already be there; most computers these days ship with an SSD. Not easy to find one that comes with HDD as standard.

The real deals can be found with enterprises and businesses dumping their old drives as their support contracts end, and most of them can be found on eBay.

      HDD - the new GPU!

I remember buying a 2tb for $69 pre covid. Now they have almost doubled in price

    • +1

You would have paid $138 for 4tb?

    • +1

but this deal is for 4TB.

  • +5

Why are most comments about 3.5inch USB external desktop drives?

This is a portable USB ie has a 2.5inch internal drive.

And yes, can't seem to find the $89 2TB portable drives any more. All well over $100 now.

    • +1

I thought I was losing my mind reading thess comments.

  • Lowest price for 4TB was $118 at the end of last year, or $107 going all the way back to 2021.

Wondering if I should hold out for Amazon Prime Day(s) in a few weeks or just pull the trigger now..

    • Wait for sure, they always have deals on storage

    • Lol same dilemma, I’m looking at OW return policy just in case though I’m not sure if I wanna go through the hassle.

This or WD Elements SE 5TB USB 3.0 Portable External HDD $165 (Amazon or $160 Officeworks after price beat) - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/854537?

    • +2

This is cheaper per GB, and has a SATA interface. I just bought that WD deal a few days ago but I'm considering returning it to buy this Seagate.

But really it comes down to: do you need to store more than 4TB?

  • Two questions

Are these SMR and can they be shucked?

Unlikely but may put one in my PC for storage if the answers are no and yes. They are small and cool running.

    • IIRC they are SMR - the ones I bought in 2019 were shuckable, altho they are thicker then other 2.5" hdd - 15mm i think.
      normal sata

    • It looks like it's just a SATA interface on the drive rather than something custom. It's a Seagate Barracuda 2.5" inside though, so most likely SMR and I'm not sure you would want to shuck it.

    • Yep these drives probably have shingles, but OK for external backup. Not great for constant re-writing.

  • I remembered got it for the same price on 2019.

  • Yep, silly prices but sad to say this is actually cheap relatively post-COVID. Was logging in to say not for shucking but ldd-mn beat me to it.
NOT FOR SHUCKING, well, with respect to drive height. Sure it has SATA but why get a 2.5 drive for shucking when it can be 3.5"?

It must be the duopoly has completely stopped researching making 2.5 drive platters better; as it would seem most (or ALL?) >2TB drives are the fatter.

  • Are these drives good to store audio production files on or am I best to invest in Samsung T7 shield?

  • Recently had one of these fail

Had it plugged into the router for a media server and it seems like it broke on a power outage.

Anyone who knows about hard drives know if this is common or was I unlucky?

Not sure whether to replace if it's just gonna fry on a power outage again

    • +2

Often the failure is with the controller board not the mechanical drive so you could try saving your data by pulling out the drive and plugging it into another SATA controller. If it works just buy a HDD case from ali express for cheap.

      • I've already done exactly that hoping thats the problem, ordered a case about 5 days ago

        Fingers crossed it works

        • Let us know how it goes for you

  • F me. Literally sat down to finally order via Amazon and its gone.

    • Showing in stock for me… maybe because I just cancelled my order?

  • Lol back in and grabbed!

  • +1

Amazon price is now $184, so I expect this deal to end soon.

    • Amazon dynamic pricing, and/or stocks are getting low maybe?

    • Back to $184 on Officeworks, once logged in to purchase.

When not logged in, it's "not available online".

  • Amazing deal for this 2.5” 4TB. Because Amazon just put its price back up to $184 tonight. And the same form factor 2.5” in 2TB is already $124. I will be watching to see how long before Officeworks puts the price back up too.

I got Officeworks click and collect.

Tbh I would never buy a HDD or SSD online for delivery, because you never know if you’ll get a good or bad delivery driver. Some drivers kick and throw packages down the driveway - have seen horror videos of this happening from people’s doorbell cam footage. Or even just an accidental fumble and hit the ground during unloading. Thats the last thing you want to happen to a mass storage device

    • Update: Amazons price was back to higher already at 11pm. OW put the price back higher a bit later, around midnight.

  • Both no longer available. urgh.

    • +1

Yeah. Might go into OW and ask them to honour the price. I was going to buy 3 anyway. I have a screenshot of the price too. But looks like stock is very low in my area. Damn.

JB had the price at $128 also for like half the day.

Update: no luck, would not honour
