seems ok for $67.6 per TB.

    $169/5=$33.8

    What am I missing here?

You're missing the OP's poor math skills 😅

i was like $67.6 per TB is exceptionally expensive…

    • good one! I was comparing the price to a 2TB HD and have posted that instead XD

  • Besides price and only 2yr warranty and the Passport being 3yr warranty, how does this compare to the Passport series of the same size of drive?
(and or, this one being a bit bigger in size and weight than the passport)

    • -1

I think Elements is the 3.5" drive inside while Passport is 2.5" drive inside, so dimensions and weight. Product pages will tell you.

      • +1

They're the same size drive, potentially the same drives inside altogether - just different design and software included, apparently.

3.5" drives are huge compared to 2.5" ones.

      • +2

        Both are 2.5" drives.

Just some small variation in weight and H x W x L in mm.

        75W x 107.2D x 19.15H mm - 0.21 kg - WD 5TB My Passport
        81.57W x 110.07D x 20.96H mm - 0.23 kg - WD 5TB Elements SE

I was more worried if price was reduced perhaps to the quality of the build or its operational time or power on/off ratio's.

No doubt plenty of reviews to read out there.

  • Can this be shucked

    • Can any of these cheaper 5tb hdds be shucked? Looking for a little one for my k39 itx pc

    • No. WD 2.5" portables are having integrated USB ports makes them hard to convert back to being a SATA drive.

Seagate on the other hand is still using SATA-to-USB bridge boards on their portable drive so you can easily shuck them.

But I wouldn't recommend that since those drives are all SMRs are no where near as good as using a proper SATA SSD. I shucked a 5TB 2.5" drive for my Cloud Key and it was dead within 3 months.

  • Unlikely

Since it's cunningly hidden in product pictures, I'm just noting it's the hideous USB Micro B (or whatever that abomination is called) on the drive. And the included cable is USB-A - USB Micro B.

    Thanks OP, got one.
