The Feather AS-D2S is Japanese designed and made, so it's remarkable and highly rated with wet shaving enthusiasts.

This version comes in a nice box so it can be good present. It also comes with a stand and two razor blades. Note that while the description doesn't specifically state AS-D2, the picture shows that it is and customers have confirmed this. It is definitely not the old AS-D1.

Competitors are:
Beard and Blade $369
Safety Razors $369
Amazon AU $399

You can save money if you don't want the stand:
Mens Biz $288
Beard and Blade $289
Amazon AU $289.95

So as you can see, even without the stand, this ATL price is a bargain!

People have questioned whether it's worth spending this much on a razor just to shave. That's very subjective. Read the previous expired deals and their comments for more info. Old deal 1, old deal 2.

In terms of subjectivity, it's akin to people spending $2000 or more on headphones although the price differential is not as crazy.

I've been wet shaving for 5 years and I wish I started earlier. Plastic disposable razors and their expensive disposable razor blades with 10 blades are a scam. Terrible for the environment too for those who care about that.

What does this do that a $20 stainless steel one doesn't do? I bought one of those cheap Gillette King C ones on special years ago and it's still perfect, not a spec of rust etc. Am I missing something here?

    • +4

Also curious - my Gillette one works just fine for 10% of the cost…

    • +12

The Gillette is "pot metal" coated in a chrome finish. It's not stainless steel. Stainless steel is far more durable.

Having said that, I have razors made from pot metal and they are just fine. Shave well and durable if you look after them.

The Feather requires a shallow angle when using it, which can be a bit tricky until you get used to it.

To cut a long story short, razors are like cars. Cheap to expensive depending on where they are made and the materials used. At the end of the day they get you from A to B.

some like to roll … with a Rolls Royce state of mind

    • I don’t think any double edge razor does anything other than shave the hair off your face. Some feel nicer in the hand, some are more or less open, some hold the blade at a more or less aggressive angle etc.. at the end of the day it’s individual preference about what they want from a shave. Some just like the feeling they get holding a heavy, machined stainless steel product with deep knurling vs a chromed mild steel one made by cheaper processes. There’s a bunch of YouTube channels around that review and compare the minor differences between different razors. If you just want to remove the stubble off your mug quickly and get on with your day I doubt any of the marginal differences would be worth paying any extra money for.

    • Not much really, its much like a Rolex watch vs a generic brand.
It is mostly about appreciating that there is more craftsmanship involved. It will ultimately last longer vs a cheap plated metal, though still ruined if dropped on the tiles and lands on the head.
Perhaps a tiny bit better precision in the machining and quality control.

    • +2

Different material(which will most likely last longer), improved tolerances, improved QC.
Definitely comes down to this being a luxury item though.

  • +3

    Thanks, I got one!

  • +3

My Aliexpress stainless steel razor I've been using for 10 years. Perfect. still only $8

  • +2

Coz every girl's crazy for a clean shaven man! (play ZZ top)

I ordered with the incense burners to reduce the total order price to $154.05.

    • +2

They are less forgiving than a high tech spring loaded 8 blade contraption. But the same as simple singleblade disposables.
So if cutting yourself it is either terrible technique, or an overly agressive model and/or overly sharp blades (Feather blades being the main offender for that).

      • I agree, I think it's mostly technique.

After using a safety razor for a few years and having to regress to the stoneage of disposables, I have managed to cut perfectly spaced racing stripes into my upper lip using a Mach Turismo SpeedSlick Max whatever by pressing too hard.

Likewise, when I first started using safety razors, I accidentally dragged horizontally and gave myself a decent nick.

But with safety razors it's far less aggravation to my skin. I just use a facial cleanser in the shower for soap, no brush or towels or anything. I go against the grain without issues but everyone's gonna be different.

    • Shaving brush, some decent foam/gel. Dont go against the grain, dont push hard.

  • +2

Cheaper if I just keep my beard.

  • +3

I could buy an electric for the same price lol

    • that does the head too

    • +2

Yes, but you'd be stuck with a crappy shave

    • +1

Then you end up with a five o'clock shadow by lunchtime.

      A double-edge razor means I'm clean-shaven for 12 hours or more.

  • +1

Is this one made out of gold?

  • +2

Rockwell 6C or 6S is probably a better buy at this price point.

    • +1

Yep, was going to suggest the same thing. I use the 6C with the 4/2 head. I'm sure this razor is well built, but Feather is more known for their blades (too sharp for me).

      • Yeah I use the T2 with feather blades as my daily driver. But the 6S/6C would be my next choice especially in this price range.

    • I'd agree that it should be compared with the 6S.
Comes down to preference and what you value more.
Although, at this price, I think I'd probably go for the Feather since the 6S is generally going for a like $190-200 without a stand(even if it does come with the 3x plates).

6C is also a great razor, but if you're comparing, you may as compare it to another SS razor.
If you were going for a cheaper razor, the Feather wouldn't be one you would consider either way.

      • Generally going price is without a sale, the 6S regularly sells for $150-$160 and I've seen it as low as $130 which would make it a better choice.

The stand is a stand you can pick up stands for next to nothing. $5 from AliExpress. The plate combinations are more useful than a stand imo.

        • If you can get the 6S for those prices, I'd also say go for that.

I just had a quick look at pricing for the 6S and saw the RRP was now US$120, so figured $190ish was about what to expect now.

The plate combinations are nice, but at the same time, I found once I found the plate I liked, I never swapped and just my preferred plate.
If you like the blade gap that comes on the AS-D2, then the additional plates don't matter.

  • Is this one heated?

    Madness

I got this last year and have basically gone through 3 plastic disposable razors in that time and I shave my head every second day.

  • +1

My personal experience with this razor - looks good, nice heavy and firm weight, never used again after the two blades that came with it ran out. A lot of different reviews out there comparing the handle quality and closeness to shave and personal opinion is quality of the shave is in the blades not the actual handle, and a Electric Razor, One Blade or 5x Gillette blade razor will always outperform this. Might work well for some people but recommend trying this style of shaver first with a much more cost effective variant before investing in a good one.

    • +2

If you want a good, close shave, I think most people would disagree that you get a better result with any of the options you've listed(which are all considered pretty garbage).
Double edge razor or straight razor is widely seen as the best way to get the best result, but requires a little more time/effort on the users part.
And I can attest to that in my experience.

  • +1

How does this compare to a Henson?

  • +3

This product is for those who knows about doube edge razor.
I changed from a Merkur to this. It's night and day. Japanese craftsmanship, highly recommended. You normally only get it at this price if you live in Japan.

    • +3

Enlighten us peasants that are using the $15 Gillette ones. What makes these superior and worth 10 times the price?

      • +1

In the particular case of that Gillette, that one has a slippery handle, and the notched head is a niche thing which a lot wont like.
Those are deliberate design/style choices, but could be argued that Gillette dont want to make it too good (there is a whole history behind DE razors being phased out by Gillette marketing because they dont make much money, forget dollar shave club DE is like 5c shave club).

The Feather is superior quality and material, though that wont make any difference to the shave. You are paying that premium because you appreciate high quality/precision as you would with a premium watch.

    • Are you Neel?

    • Same, The feather razor itself is setup to allow more sloppy technique over say a merkur, however i noticed I need to go against the grain for a super close shave.

But overall I need to be half dead to cut myself with this and a feather blade, compared to the fear of feather+Merkur every morning.

    • All reports say it is extremely mild.

The problem with premium, non-adjustable mild razors is "YMMV". They may do a great job, or they may simply be unsuitable. It depends on the individual, so it's an expensive gamble.

    • Which merkur did you change from? I have a 37C and am just wondering in what ways you've found this to be different?

  • Hmmm I have a Edwin Jagger Barley DE89 and Merkur (adjustable - I don't like it). Should I upgrade?

    • No. The Edwin Jagger Barley DE89 is a fine razor.

  • +1

    Thanks OP, bought ten.

    • +1

Ten? That's great, now you can finally shave your eyebrows in one sitting

      • one for each finger

  • Seriously if you're allergic to Chinesium but don't want to spend a fortune on this, there's a cheaper brand called "Lord" on Amazon that's even cheaper than Gillette and Made in Egypt. Been using for 4 years very happy with it.

  • +4

Is a nice razor but is regarded as being quite mild, head geometry reminds me of many of the old Gillette 3 pieces.

I own a quite sought after stainless steel razor myself, (Weber) - and while yes, Stainless is a great material it's for the intents of shaving not superior to even potmetal (zamak) - as I've never seen a razor with significant pitting or issues from normal usage.

A lot of the buyers of this razor tend to sell it as they find it too mild and dull - this is why an adjustable Gillette is so sought after - the Slim adjustable being the king for many.

This Feather razor is yet another example of how folks get into safety razors to save $$$ vs cartridges and then buy stuff like this costing them a lot more. And I know that I did exactly that myself.

All this said I have to say if you must have a stainless steel razor - its a very good price, just be aware it's quite mild & won't shave any better than a $10 one. But is impressive, if that helps.

    • +1

Thanks - this is exactly the information I am after.

I have a Merkur 34c but found it too mild and switched to Merkur Futur. At setting #4 it is too aggressive so I dialled it down to 3.

Sounds like this Feather will be too mild for me.

      • +2

Oh yes, it's much milder than both of those. Glad to assist.

FWIW you can mod mild razors to make them more bitey by making a simple shim from used blades, enlarges the blade gap.

But yet again - I'd say chase a vintage Gillette Slim. 9 or so steps, very grippy handle & very small compact head - the latter two both weaknesses of the monstrously sized Futur.

This is a nice one and still half the price of Japanese one.

    • +2

You're comparing chrome-plated pot metal with solid stainless. It's not really a fair comparison.

You'll get a decade or more out of your Merkur if you look after it, but the Feather could last a few lifetimes.

      • Damn the Merkur is pot metal? Fair do's then. How can you tell?

      • OK but I only need it for one lifetime. Anything that is cheaper which will last for a single lifetime?

To be precise maybe another 20 years tops at the rate I’m going.

  • Thanks op bought 3

  • +2

Does it shave scrotum better than plastic ones?

  • I don't need this.
    I don't need this.
    I want it!

    • +1

      Get it!

If in doubt, buy first regret later.
